Manifest Destiny, the concert! It sounds like a Broadway musical on 19th century hoopla shit... Nope. I’m talking about the second annual Manifest Destiny show put on by Tony Presedo, founder of TeePee Records. This is Tony’s way of giving back to California and its steady ‘heavy’ music scene.
The lineup is pretty damn impressive if you ask us and well worth the $15 you’ll have to cough up to get in. The party gets started at 3pm on Sunday, Sept. 7 (we'll remind you about it closer to then too, you stoner) at The Echoplex. Plenty of time to get your afternoon drink on and lose yourself in the riff paradise that will most definitely be going on (excuse us... I think we just hit the spliff one too many times thinking of this show).
Sunday September 7th @ 3pm - Witchcraft, Earthless, Witch, The Warlocks, Graveyard, Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound, Ancestors, Night Horse, T.K. Webb and the Visions @ The Echoplex [tix]

We're getting a contact high from the damn thing, and we're itching for a real contact high at one of the band's shows. Well lucky us (and you)-- the band is heading out on the road soon and they're brining The Warlocks with 'em for the summer dates.

Tomorrow, the music industry continues grasping at past successes rather than embracing and nurturing promising new talents in their continued efforts to put themselves out of business by flooding the market with a shit-storm of reissues and Best-Ofs from the likes of 2Pac, The Eagles, Godsmack, and Idlewild, to name a few.
Wow, that was a mouthful. If we seem a bit jaded, we are.
Anyway, speaking of Godsmack-- tomorrow's release, Good Times, Bad Times...10 Years Of Godsmack will also be available on vinyl (a double LP picture disc no less). Trying to picture a Godsmack fan and a turntable in the same room may put your imagination to the test, so don't think too hard about it.
Speaking of vinyl, it looks like the Godsmack camp aren't the only ones who are feeling waxy (sorry) these days. Rhino is reissuing roughly the second half of Depeche Mode's discography on 180 gram vinyl, and plenty additional releases tomorrow are available in the vinyl format as well. The trend seems to be that as CD sales decline (and are possibly already in their final throes), vinyl is enjoying a notable, if small, resurgence. This isn't exactly surprising-- vinyl has survived the rise and fall of at least two subsequent formats (8-track and cassette) and now, or rather soon, very likely a third. Music geeks often laud the benefits and advantages of vinyl-- better, warmer sound; more tangible; collectible; visually appealing; etc.-- and we at crustcake are no exception. After all, a CD is nothing but a glorified digital storage unit-- merely a physical carrier of that which is widely available without the wasted plastic or the wait (i.e. mp3's).
And most artists/labels (or at least those who are forward-thinking) are now including a CD or download code with their vinyl offerings anyway, so fans can have the best of both worlds-- the total-experience of the physical vinyl record for those late-night toking sessions and the convenience of the digital files for the train/car ride to work the next morning.
Lastly, Daft Punk is releasing a live album, Pelican is releasing an 3CD/DVD set that we can't find a lick of information about (although, admittedly we didn't look too hard), The Warlocks have a new album, and David Cross' favorite comedian is releasing a Christmas album. Let us know how that one is.

* NOTE: This week, we are introducing another guarantee to make our readers' experience just that much more dandy. Crustcake promises, henceforth, only to link to albums or songs on iTunes if they are available in iTunes Plus format. If they aren't, iTunes doesn't get the link. For more info on iTunes Plus, click here (opens iTunes).
In addition, Kemado is now taking pre-orders for the The Sword's upcoming split with Witchcraft. Three brand new Witchcraft songs? The Sword covering Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song"? Two of our favorite bands on the same record? Can life get any better? I submit that it cannot!
Lastly, Rise Above is taking pre-orders for the 12" version of Witchcraft's recently released third full-length. Get over there fast, as the first two colors are already sold out (yeah, we missed the boat too... crustcake gerf settled for the Black Sparkle version) and they are only going to get more scarce, what with Phil Anselmo's recent endorsement of the crustcakefavorites.
Tough choices on Friday. Canadian swine-core six-piece Despised Icon are at Bowery Poetry Club, though by the time you get through the unoriginal tech-metal of The Network, the merely decent death metal of Sons of Azrael, and the intolerable dudebro-core of Death Before Dishonor, you may be more interested in a beer and an old Slayer DVD than any more breakdowns.
Fortunately, if you do make it that long, Despised Icon are slotted before Christian Metalcore bigtimers The Chariot-- whose steampunk-inspiredimagery is fantastic but regurgitated metalcore riffs are not-- so you'll at least be able to cut out early and make it across the bridge to catch the end of the Tee Pee RecordsShowcase at Luna Lounge. The Tee Pee Showcase features one of the most solid lineups of the week and you can bet your bottom dollar that that's where we'll be spending the evening, spliff or no spliff.
The Warlocks explore a mellower side of the psyche-rock aesthetic, while Earthless are prone to 20-minute-plus-but-never-masturbatory hard rock jam sessions (alright, so they may sound a wee bit like you and your buddies jamming in your basement but we like them anyway). The only thing that could make the Tee Pee Showcase better would be if Luna allows re-entry-- Spuyten Duyvil is right next door and Fette Sau across the street. What better way to spend a Friday night than five solid sets of old fashioned rock and roll shuffled in with New York's finest beer, whiskey, and barbecue?
