Crustcake Picks - New Music 6/10

Crustcake Picks New Music

by cruscake gerf (NYC)

So, lemme tell ya what just happened. I was perusing my usual resources to see what new music is coming out tomorrow in an attempt to put together this post. I saw that Disturbed's new album will be out tomorrow, and do you know what happened then? I found myself unconsciously clicking over to iTunes and throwing on Ire Works.

I guess Weinman and Co.'s little PR plan worked, eh?

On the real though, tomorrow sees the release of Nachtmystium's Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1, and it's a must-have. Check out "Assassins" and "Your True Enemy" at the band's MySpace page and then check out the whole fucking record tomorrow. Unclassifiable.

I'm a bit torn on A Storm of Light's debut, And We Wept the Black Ocean Within. It's either a second-rate Neurosis knock-off or a fantastic record, and I can't decide which. I've been listening to it quite a bit lately though, so I'm leaning towards the latter. And even if Mr. Graham and his co-conspirators are drawing an excessive amount of influence from Neurosis, they're doing it exceptionally well. And We Wept excels at creating a dark, dismal nautical mood: creaking, groaning ship sounds and an actual fog horn compliment desolate guitars and anguished vocals in a stew of epic seafaring proportions. It's out tomorrow, but personally I'm holding out hopes for a vinyl release. Just look at this artwork.

Also out tomorrow, Pentemple O))) Presents:

In May of 2007 thee mighty SUNN 0))) embarked on a Pacific Rim tour. The lineup for this tour included the core sunn 0))) duo: Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley plus T.O.S. (Moog), Oren Ambarchi (analog effects and supplemental guitar) and vokillist Attila Csihar. Upon arrival in Melbourne, Australia, sunn 0))) invited one of their favorite black metal artists: Striborg over from Tasmania (!!!) to collaborate with them during their show. This unholy meeting went over very well and the inaugural ritual was a warm up gig at the Toft in Town club one evening before the larger gig at the Hi-Fi Bar (w/ brethren: Boris).

The results of this collaboration was a completely improvisational, vicious audio and visual assault. Striborg really blew all of us way with not only his wicked vocal invocations but also his incredibly skillful drumming! This was among the first time that sunn 0))) had worked with live drums and the outcome was completely unprecedented. The whole event was recorded live to 24-track/multi-track. Afterwards Oren Ambarchi edited, sequenced and overhauled the EQ to make it as brutal as possible. This blackened low-end psychedelic war is not for the faint of heart!

This cd release is strictly limited to 3,000 machine numbered copies. It's available from Southern Lord.

Axl Rosenberg of MetalSucks Tears Dan Donegan of Disturbed a New One

Dan Donegan

Evidently, Disturbed and Dillinger Escape Plan are in a bit of a feud. We ordinarily wouldn't give two shits, but Axl Rosenberg has written up a hilarious response to the whole ordeal and we just had to share:

In case you’re not caught up on this whole shebang, here’s what’s goin’ down: earlier this month, Beat magazine conducted an interview with DEP guitarist Ben Weinman. One such passage in that article goes a little sumpin’ like this:

“When Dillinger find themselves on dual headlining bills, or festivals, they get to see the sadly rehearsed acts of other bands. Heavy rock cavemen Disturbed were soundchecking before an English show and Weinman was taken aback that they were ‘practicing where they were going to walk and when they were going to put their leg up on the monitor and pose. That was weird for us. There are times where I don’t even know where I am.’”

Okay. Fair enough. But now here comes Disturbed guitarist Dan Donegan, who, Blabbermouth reports, responded in an MTV interview:

“I never even remember meeting these guys, and I think we know anybody that’s even in the room during our soundchecks, so that’s shocking to me, because I would think that we would have met them if they were standing there during our soundcheck,” Donegan said. “That’s funny. When we do a bigger production, there may be certain lighting cues for certain highlights of the show, but I wouldn’t call it ‘posing,’ just a cue for our lighting guy, so he can add more drama to the set. If [DILLINGER] sold some records, and were at the level we’re at, maybe they’d see that, for bands like KISS and METALLICA, there are certain highlight points during a set that you want to focus on. If I’m going to go over to one spot and do a guitar solo, my lighting guy may need to know that, so he can focus in on that.

Head on over to MetalSucks to read Axl's poignant response.

Flick Friday - Saviours, Dillinger Escape Plan, Yeasayer

Flick Friday

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

Minutes after last week's 'Flick Friday' went live Headbanger's Blog premiered the new (and first) video from Oakland, CA's Saviours.

A tip o' the hat to all involved for allowing the video to run the full length of the song (five minutes and forty eight seconds, to be exact). Much like the song itself, the video for "Narcotic Sea" (directed by Dante Della Maggiore) is all over the place. From trippy Tron-evoking digital grids to epic landscape shots to straight up performance clips, this video certainly doesn't get boring despite a run time double that of a typical music video.

Saviours - "Narcotic Sea":

MetalInjection.net recently hired a huge-ass camera crew and filmed Dillinger Escape Plan, A Life Once Lost, Genghis Tron, and Shat on tour. Check out all the interviews and footage here, and check out DEP ripping "Sugar Coated Sour" off their genre-defining album, Calculating Infinity right here:

Dillinger Escape Plan - "Sugar Coated Sour":

Alright, this band, Yeasayer, has been lighting up the blogosphere lately (Exhibit A; Exhibit B; Exhibit C). They didn't exactly blow me away when I caught them at CMJ last October, but their recent performance on Conan O'Brien was pretty swell. "My favorite song in a long time," said Conan.

Mastodon are 'Rockstars', Torche to Release New Album, Dillinger Escape Plan on TV

Mastodon and Borat

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

Brooklyn Vegan reports that Mastodon will be joining the "Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour":

Mastodon has announced plans to tour with the supremely dubious named "Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour", providing support for (ugh) co-headliners Slipknot & Disturbed, as well as Machine Head, Dragonforce, The Red Chord and many others. Tentative dates are below...
The 'many others' includes Sevendust, Airbourne, Five Finger Death Punch, 36 Crazyfists, Black Tide, Suicide Silence, and Walls of Jericho. Yikes...

Alright, let's go about this in a methodic fashion.

First, the 'pros':
• Mastodon rocks
• DragonForce are a bit of a guilty pleasure and I would totally be down to witness their wankery live
Next, the 'questionables':
• Machine Head - never been super geeked out about them
• The Red Chord - used to be super geeked out about them
• Airbourne - who the hell are they? Their name sounds cool...
Now, the 'no, thank yous':
• Slipknot - no, thank you
• Disturbed - uhhh
• Sevendust - nah, thanks though
• Five Finger Death Punch - who?
• 36 Crazyfists - nope
• Suicide Silence - I think I may have heard of them...
• Walls of Jericho - nah... I mean, I'd rather watch them than Disturbed, but I'd rather not watch them than watch them...
And now for the kicker. As someone pointed out on BV, Rockstar Energy Drink, the curator of this tour, is owned and operated by the Weiner family. No, not Oscar Meyer-- I'm talking about Weiner as in Michael Weiner, who you probably know better as Michael Savage. Still confused? Watch this:

Salon.com has a great article about Savage. It's a bit old, but interesting nonetheless.

So, let's recap. 2 'pros', 3 'questionables', and 7 'no thank yous' (oh, and that whole Michael Savage thing). Sorry, Mastodon, looks like I won't be seeing you this summer. It's nothing personal, and I certainly hope you guys make some dough, but I'm just not going to be able to make it. Good thing you just played a pair of epic shows in a temple in Brooklyn with Neurosis. That should be enough to hold me over for awhile.

In other metal news, Brooklyn Vegan is also reporting (Black Bubblegum, on his game again) that Torche, who's In Return EP earned a spot on my best of 2007 list despite containing a mere 20 minutes of music, are set to release their sophomore full-length on April 8, one week after The Sword's Gods of the Earth hits your speakers.
Miami's own Torche has announced plans for Meanderthal, their second LP and third overall release on the heels of the mighty In Return EP. Aaron Turner's Hydra Head will release Meanderthal on April 8th, which (like almost everything nowadays) will be produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge) at GodCity in Salem, MA. Meanwhile look for the boys to play a string of dates (below) including the Hydra Head showcase at SXSW, and a few opening for Georgia badasses Harvey Milk.....

TORCHE - 2008 TOUR DATES
February 24 - Churchill's Pub Miami, FL*
March 9 - Common Grounds Gainesville, FL
March 10 - The Jinx Savannah, GA
March 11 - Drunken Unicorn, Atlanta, GA**
March 12 - Downtown Music, Little Rock AR**
March 13 - Andy's Bar, Denton TX**
March 14 - Hydra Head Records Showcase at SXSW ***

* with WATERFORD LANDING, TOUNGE OF THE HEARTWORM, JACUZZI BOYS
** with HARVEY MILK
*** with HARVEY MILK, KAYO DOT, CLOUDS, EVERLOVELY LIGHTNINGHEART

No northeast (or west coast) dates yet. Guess we'll have to wait until after Meanderthal hits shelves.

Lastly, just a reminder that Dillinger Escape Plan will be on Conan O'Brien tonight (thx MetalSucks). Surely they'll play "Milk Lizard," which I think is an Every Time I Die cover...

Metal - Marginalized No Longer?

Earlier this week I ran a post in which I mused that metal has been garnering increased attention and kudos lately from indie rockers and the greater music critic community. Turns out others have noticed the phenomenon too; David McNamee of The Guardian wrote a column on December 31 in which he proclaimed that in 2007 "critics [were] falling over themselves to embrace [heavy metal]."

McNamee then asks, "so why don't any of 2007's excellent releases feature in the end-of-year lists?"

Over what seems like months, the messageboards and blogs have been aflame with musings on what albums will make the music critics' end-of-year polls. With the results now in, the predictable omnipotence of Radiohead's In Rainbows, LCD Soundsystem and the Arcade Fire has been confirmed, but one swathe of releases were scandalously omitted.

[...]

There wasn't a single rock (sic) or metal album in the critics polls from Uncut, Mojo, The Guardian, Observer Music Monthly, Drowned In Sound or Pitchfork, with NME counting just Queens Of The Stone Age's weak comeback, and the newly-metal-friendly Wire solely hailing hippy-doomsters Om. Given that other perceived niche genres such as dance or hip-hop are well represented, if tokenistically, you have to wonder why there is still such a stigma and snobbery around the canonisation of metal. [via]

There are a whole slew of comments on the article, some of which are completely off-base or bigoted, others of which are quite enlightening. Thankfully, Cosmo Lee has been so kind as to cull some of the more interesting comments for us over on his Invisible Oranges blog.

So, it seems there are two pertinent questions:

1.) Why have mainstream and indie-rock-centric critics alike seemingly begun to embrace metal more and more as of late?

2.) Why, then, have those circles refused to 'canonize' that same music by including it in their ever-important (like it or not) year-end best-of lists?

Looking forward, with the end of the metalcore trend in sight and a newly emerging metal movement-- a movement that includes both forward-thinking bands (e.g. Baroness, Dillinger Escape Plan) and 'revival' bands (e.g. Witchcraft, Saviours)-- maybe 2008 will be the year that the rejuvenated genre finally begins to creep its way onto the year-end lists of the Pitchforks, Spins, and Stereogums of the world, staking its claim to a well-deserved place in the canon of modern popular (read: un-marginalized) music.

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows 12/13 - 12/19

Crustcake Show Picks

Everything from death metal destruction to DFA dance party this week. I am looking forward to Dillinger Escape Plan (never seen them before... yeah yeah, I know) with extreme metallers and Ron Paul supporters Architect. If Architect's live show has half the intensity of their album, All Is Not Lost, faces are sure to be melted.

The Death by Decibels show Tuesday looks enticing as well: some classic Death-- capitol 'D'-- Metal (Vader, Malevolent Creation) spiced up with the human-hating grind of Cattle Decapitation.

Thursday 12/13 - White Rabbits, The Harlem Shakes, The Subjects @ Bowery Ballroom

Friday 12/14 - Unearthly Trance, Absolvor, L.A. Cross @ Tommy's Tavern
