Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows 2/21 - 2/27

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

Another big week for shows in the Big Apple. I'll give you a quick overview of the highlights; check out the whole list below for more.

Brooklyn post-rockers The Big Sleep released a new record this week. What do you do when you release a new record? Record release party of course! It's tonight at Mercury Lounge and joining them will be Priestbird (formerly Tarantula AD), who are highly recommended. Each of the three members are multi-instrumentalists, and they weave an epic soundscape of post-modern, neo-classical cinematic art rock.

Priestbird - "Season of the Sun":

Also not to miss-- Sourvein and Zoroaster at the Knitting Factory on Sunday and Russian Circles and Dälek at Maxwell's (Hoboken) Sunday and the Knitting Factory Monday. Check out all the MP3's at the end of this post.

NYC show picks 2/21 - 2/27:

Thursday 2/21 - The Big Sleep (record release show), Sian Alice Group, Priestbird, Heavy Creatures @ Mercury Lounge [Tix]

Crustcake Picks - New Music 2/12

Crustcake Picks New Music

Last week was such a great one with new releases from Dead Meadow, Sourvein, and Warbringer, we just knew the music industry couldn't keep it up. There ain't shit coming out tomorrow worth its weight in plastic (post-Max Sepultura two-fer, anyone?), so fuck it.

Go to a show or something-- you really need to get out more.

Crustcake Picks - LA Shows 2/7 - 2/13

Crustcake Picks - LA Shows

by beatmasterspeech (LA)

Ladies and gentlemen, we have only three shows that have hit my radar for Los Angeles (which is Spanish for The Angeles) this week. Kick it off this Friday with a fun band to watch, Bad Dudes at-- yes you guessed it-- The Smell, again.

As previously mentioned, Sourvein and Zoroaster will be laying the sludge all over the Knitting Factory this Sunday. Rumor has it that 16 is also on this bill.

After you’ve studied the doom, pick yourself back up and come thrash it up with Darkest Hour and get educated on the disgusting grind tendencies of Cephalic Carnage at The Roxy Wednesday. If you’ve never seen Cephalic, I highly suggest it-- they are some funny dudes and nonetheless super brutal.

Cephalic Carnage - Xenosapien Webisode #1:

Check out the King of Metal’s (aka comedian Dave Hill of semi-joke metal band Children of the Unicorn, both of whom crustcake gerf loves) interview with vocalist Lenzig Von Strokenoff (classic!) while on the Summer’s Laughter Tour……..summer slaughter?

LA show picks 2/7 - 2/13:

Friday 2/8 - Bad Dudes @ The Smell

Sunday 2/10 - Sourvein, Zoroaster @ The Knitting Factory (alterknit lounge)

Wednesday 2/13 - Darkest Hour, Cephalic Carnage @ The Roxy

[MP3] Zoroaster - "Tualatin"

Crustcake Picks - New Music 2/5

Crustcake Picks New Music

Thrash thrash thrash! Everywhere we look, the thrash resurgence is making itself known. Ventura, California's Warbringer, who we've been repping hard lately, release their debut full length, War Without End, tomorrow via Century Media. They're playing tonight in New York and you can be sure that we'll be there to see if they live up to the hype. We'll try to ask them about that pizza party, too.

Earache is attempting to capitalize on the trend tomorrow with their Thrashing Like a Maniac compilation, which includes tracks from Municipal Waste, Evile, Dekapitator, Fueled by Fire, Toxic Holocaust, Bonded by Blood, Gama Bomb, and-- wouldn't you know it-- Warbringer.

We love us some good thrash-- but we also love us some psychedelic grooves! Dead Meadow's Old Growth is out tomorrow. We first got a chance to hear some of the new tunes when they played Bowery Ballroom last month, and we were thoroughly impressed. Old Growth is highly recommended. In case you missed it before, check out their video for "What Needs Must Be" (and more) after the jump.

Dead Meadow - "What Needs Must Be":

Also recommended is Sourvein's Ghetto Angel EP. It's apparently the second in a series of three EP's, but Sourvein is lacking in the PR department and accurate info is hard to come by. Sourvein are on tour right now with Zoroaster. They'll be at LA's Knitting Factory on February 10th and then New York's Knitting Factory on the 24th.

Our picks:

Dead Meadow - Old Growth [Amazon]

Hot Chip - Made in the Dark [Amazon]

ISIS - Holy Tears (single) [Amazon]

Sourvein - Ghetto Angel [Amazon]

Warbringer - War Without End [Amazon]

Earache - Thrashing Like a Maniac (compilation) [Amazon]

More at Largehearted Boy.

Crusty Clip of the Week - beatmasterspeech

Crusty Clip of the Week

Sourvein may have floated under the doom radar but they are definitely worthy of attention. Like Eyehategod and Graves At Sea, Sourvein's formula features exaggerated Sabbathian riffs tuned way down and terrorizing, scratchy vocals. "Seamerchant" is from Sourvein's 2002 release Will To Mangle, which also featured current Electric Wizard Liz Buckingham on the six string.

Sourvein - "Seamerchant" (2002):
