Crusty Clip of the Week: Red Sparowes - "Alone and Unaware, The Landscape Was Transformed In Front Of Our Eyes"

Crusty Clip of the Week

Every Wednesday, your hosts post a suitably stale video clip that we think needs to be revisited. Click here for more Crusty Clips. Got a clip you think we should post? Send it to crustcake@gmail.com. Crusty Clips brought to you by Metal Injection.

Remember that time we said that we prefer old Red Sparowes to new? Well, here's some old Red Sparowes for ya, featuring Josh Graham on guitar and Greg Burns on the pedal steel. We recommend clicking through to YouTube and going full screen for this one.

Red Sparowes - New EP Soon, Tour

Red Sparowes

Cinematic instrumental post-rockers Red Sparowes are back with a new EP, Aphorisms, due out via Neurot digitally on August 1st and physically (CD, vinyl) later this fall. The EP was engineered by Toshi Kasai, who recently turned Big Business from a duo into a trio.

Aphorisms will include only three tracks, but for Red Sparowes that's likely to top 30 minutes. The first of the three cuts, "We left the apes to rot, but find the fang Red Sparowes - Aphorismsstill grows within" (actually one of the band's shorter song titles), is streaming at Red Sparowes' MySpace page.

We listened, and the song is good, but to be honest we prefer old Red Sparowes-- 2005's At the Soundless Dawn is such a fantastic record, and 2006's Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun has its moments as well, particularly its lead 'single' "Like the Howling Glory of the Darkest Winds, This Voice Was Thunderous and the Words Holy, Tangling Their Way Around Our Hearts and Clutching Our Innocent Awe"-- what an incredible composition that song is...

Red Sparowes are certainly still one of the best bands doing the cinematic post-rock thing, even sans Josh Graham (Neurosis [visuals], Battle of Mice, A Storm of Light), and Aphorisms will surely be worth checking out.

Tour dates after the jump.

A Storm Of Light - Tour Dates

A Storm of Light

Josh Graham's (Battle of Mice, ex-Red Sparowes) latest project, A Storm of Light, will be on the road soon for some east coast dates with Harvey Milk and a tour of Europe with Neurosis. We originally reported that A Storm of Light's debut, was scheduled for a June 2nd release (via Neurot), but that's been pushed back a week to the 10th. Check out the hauntingly beautiful track "Mass" from the album at the band's MySpace.

Besides playing in A Storm Of Light, Graham is well known for creating the visuals for Neurosis' live show. Black Bubblegum recently spoke with Graham about that and more.

And speaking of visuals, check out the incredible image-- along with the tour dates-- after the jump.

Crustcake Picks - La Shows 3/27 - 4/2

Crustcake Picks - LA Shows

by beatmasterspeech (LA)

Instrumental bliss will be poking its head out of the Echoplex tonight-- Red Sparowes and Russian Circles will be there to show you how it's done sans vokills. If you're reading this blog you are probably at least somewhat familiar with both bands, but let's try and describe each with only two words. Red Sparowes = dark dreams; Russian Circles = progressive salad. Not sure if that worked but I had fun doing it... Kids, do try this one at home.

Download: Red Sparowes – "Our Happiest Days Slowly Began to Turn Into Dust" [MP3]
Download: Russian Circles – "Death Rides a Horse" [MP3]

I will support Middian's legal fund by going and buying a bunch of beer and maybe a shirt Friday night at the Mountain Bar. After all, there's no cover charge. I love the Mountain Bar-- downstairs gives the illusion of blood dripping down the wall, or that just could be my twisted mind's interpretation. But you can bet your ass that with a night of dirty doom courtesy of Indian, Middian, and Ancestors, you too might think it's blood dripping and not a fancy shmancy paint job... Did I mention it was free?

Download: Indian – "Slights and Abuse" [MP3]
Download: Middian – "The Celebrant (sample)" [MP3]

Aaaaaaand there are some other cool shows worth mentioning that could put a hurtin' on my wallet in the coming days. GZA will be spitting hot fire (man that sounded dumb after re-reading it) at the El Rey Theatre [which is Spanish for "The The King Theatre" - Ed.], maybe he'll bust some stuff from the Liquid Swords LP.

House of Blues Sunset will provide dinner and drinks for Soilwork next Wednesday. Let me be honest-- I really just want to hear the Chainheart Machine stuff and then I'll probably go over to The Knitting Factory to catch power duo Jucifer. Let's play that game we did earlier again: Jucifer = downtuned angel (I think I suck at this two word thing... Oh well).

Download: Jucifer – "Hennin Hardine" [MP3]

LA show picks 3/27 - 4/2:

Thursday 3/27 - Red Sparowes, Russian Circles @ The Echoplex [tix]

Friday 3/28 - Indian, Middian, Ancestors @ The Mountain Bar [Free!]

Saturday 3/29 - GZA @ El Rey Theatre [tix]

Wednesday 4/2 - Soilwork @ House of Blues, Sunset [tix]

Wednesday 4/2 - Jucifer @ The Knitting Factory [tix]

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows 1/24 - 1/30

Crustcake Show Picks

Well, I pretty much have tunnel vision for one show and one show only this week.... Yup, you guessed it-- Neurosis and Mastodon at Brooklyn Masonic Temple. I'm a big fan of both bands, and seeing the elusive Neurosis is an opportunity not to be missed.

It's a two-night stint-- tonight's show is with U.S. Christmas and tomorrow's is with A Storm of Light. A Storm of Light, led by Josh Graham (formerly of Red Sparowes), are heavily Neurosis-influenced, judging by the lone unmastered track on their MySpace (which is fairly unsurprising given that Graham also apparently does visuals for Neurosis).

Appropriately, Neurosis-owned Neurot Recordings will be releasing their debut album. The album, called And We Wept the Black Ocean Within will be out in April.

Check out the stunning cover art (click to enlarge):

And We Wept the Black Ocean Within

Unfortunately, if you weren't paying attention before, you're up shit creek-- both shows are now sold out.

NYC Shows 1/24 - 1/30:

Thursday 1/24 - Neurosis, Mastodon, U.S. Christmas @ Brooklyn Masonic Temple

Friday 1/25 - Neurosis, Mastodon, A Storm of Light @ Brooklyn Masonic Temple
In case you missed it before, here is the epic show flyer, which they had better have available for purchase at the shows:

[MP3] Neurosis - "Water is not Enough"
