Tour: Opeth, High On Fire, Baroness

Opeth

More dates have been announced for Opeth's previously-announced fall tour. With support from High On Fire and Baroness (and Nachtmystium in their native Chicago?), this is shaping up to be one of the best tours of the fall. Dates, which are still unconfirmed, are below.

Opeth recently released Watershed, which seems to be getting mostly positive, but somewhat mixed reviews. The album is a good effort with many wonderful moments, but it doesn't latch on to the listener the same way as Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries do.

Opeth - Watershed Rehearsal Tapes (from the Watershed bonus DVD):

High On Fire and Baroness both released top-notch albums in 2007, with both albums reaching both crustcake gerf and beatmasterspeech's Top 10s.

Opeth, High On Fire, Baroness - 2008 Fall Tour:

9/18 Buffalo, NY @ Town Ballroom
9/23 Cleveland, OH @ House of Blues

Crustcake Picks - New Music 6/3

Crustcake Picks New Music

Download: Opeth - "Lotus Eater" [MP3]

Tomorrow sees the release of at least two new albums that come with the ever-coveted crustcake seal of approval. Unless you've been living under a rock, you're aware that the floodgates on Opeth's eagerly-anticipated Watershed are to be open tomorrow (though the album has been leaking quite a bit).

If you're a fan of latter-day Opeth, Watershed is highly recommended. It's maybe not the strongest Opeth album of the 2000's, but given the band's high standards, that is by no means a negative assessment.

Also out tomorrow, Athens, GA stoner-sludge mainstays Harvey Milk are back with their fifth LP, Life... The Best Game In Town. It's a solid listen and also highly recommended for fans of The Melvins, Boris, and... Harvey Milk. Check out the cut "Decades" on the band's MySpace, and you'll be sold. None Louder says they gots the 'exclusive' full album stream, but it ain't even hosted on their site. I think you mean 'exclusive announcement' of full album stream, dudez. Regardless, check out the full album stream of Life... The Best Game In Town here.

Monday Metal Update 6/2

Monday Metal Update

Boooooring.

What a boring week. The most interesting thing that happened in the metal world this past week? A curtain fell during an Opeth show. Is that corduroy?

"The Drapery Falls," as one (or several) witty commenters... commented. Seriously, though, that's it. Not really much else going on, total snoozefest.

Alrighty, why don't you take a little perusal of the internets with us. Let's see what's crappenin over on Blabbermouth. Oh, Motörhead have announced their new album title! We do like Motörhead-- Lemmy is as close as anything we have to a god 'round these parts.

What else is going on? Oh wow, Alice Cooper will be releasing his new album on June 29th, yay! Didn't he, like, die after the Wayne's World movie? Man, that guy is old. 60, to be exact.

Alright, what's going on elsewhere on the interweb... Ah, this is cool. Trash Talk have posted a new track off their forthcoming eponymous album on their MySpace page.

Hmmmm... what else? Uhhhhhh... Ummmmmmmm.... ahhhhhhhhhhh. Oh!

No.....

Wait!!!

Ah, nope...

Ah! Here's something! This is good shit. It has absolutely nothing to do with metal though, just deal. How to draw Peter Cetera in Seven Mind-blowingly Easy Steps.

Thanks for riding the crustcake internet train. Have a nice day.

Bye.

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows 5/15 - 5/21

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

It's being reported that Saturday's Torche/Sword show is already sold out. A bummer if you didn't get tickets in advance, but a boon for the bands, especially Torche who deserve all the recognition and support in the world after the masterstroke that was Meanderthal. The show will be opened by Priestbird (read our interview) spin-off Lapdog of Satan.

One show (or rather, two) that you can still grab tickets for is the Progressive Nation double-header at Terminal 5 next week. In addition to headliners and creators Dream Theater, the tour features Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and 3.

And now, a special announcement from crustcake hip-hop dilettante Scott Roc:

Come Saturday I'll be knocking back tacos and beers with friends out in the desert, but if I was in New York I'd go see Yo Majesty at South Paw. The Miami booty bass group has been blogged about pretty extensively, so I won't go into it much here other than to say you don't have many opportunities to see a group of lesbians rock a show topless ("Your boy 50 Cent does his show with his shirt off. Why can't I?" - JWL B of Yo Majesty), rapping about kryptonite pussy over the kind of beats the famously misogynistic 2 Live Crew used.

Upcoming show details and ticket info after the jump.

NYC show picks 5/15 - 5/21:

Saturday 5/17 - Yo Majesty, Does It Offend You, Yeah? @ South Paw [tix]

Wednesday 5/21 - Dream Theater, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, 3 @ Terminal 5 [tix]

Crustcake Picks - LA Shows 5/1 - 5/7

Crustcake Picks - LA Shows

by beatmasterspeech (LA)

This happens every year, at least according to my not-so-good short term memory. Coachella comes around, and with it all metal shows disappear or go into hiding for like a week. It's as if the influx of hipsters into the so-cal area freaks the metal promoters out so much that they've become accustomed to laying low during the late April / early May concert season. That or it's just too damn expensive to be on the road right now with the cost of gas and shit.

BUT, there is one cool show to keep us sane during these turbulent times. The Progressive Nation 2008 Tour!!! YeePee. Sweep arpeggios, odd time signatures, concept albums, music for musicians, shredders!!! Yay! Alright, let me lay off the sarcasm a bit.

Us crustcake guys pretty much met over a conversation discussing Dream Theater's Scenes from a Memory, so I'm a closet fan. I haven't followed the band since then, but the line up for this tour should seal the deal even for the non Dream Theater believers. 3, Between The Buried And Me, and, wait for it... wait for it... OPETH!

Fuck yeah, the highlight. I’ve have always been an Opeth fan and I will wave that flag proudly. I'm so excited for the new record, everything I've heard so far has been beyond my expectations. So fucking Friday, be there at the Gibson Amphitheater in dreaded Universal City for epic long songs with epic story lines and epic chord progressions and epic beer prices. And OPETH.

Bye.

New Opeth Video - "Porcelain Heart"

Opeth - Porcelain Heart video still

Big promotional push for Opeth this week-- the Swedish proggers gave us a taste of Watershed (that's their forthcoming album for those that may have dozed off) on Monday, and now we have a video for the single "Porcelain Heart," which was made available for purchase yesterday.

"Porcelain Heart" is a gorgeous ghost of a song (yeah, we know 'gorgeous' isn't a very 'metal' description for a song, get over it)-- much mellower than "Lotus Eater"-- and its video is a stunning, dark, gothic affair that most recalls the work of Tim Burton. It's dramatic; so dramatic that if it was for a band with a hair less clout than Opeth, we'd probably be laughing.

The video was shot in a 17th century Swedish castle and directed by Lasse Hoile, who is also noted for his work with Porcupine Tree.

New Opeth Song - "Lotus Eater"

Opeth

Roadrunner just released the first (legal) taste of Opeth's forthcoming Watershed. "I think ['Lotus Eater'] really has everything a (sic) Opeth tune should have, or maybe I only like it because it's so fucked up and odd?" said mainman Mikael Åkerfeldt. Right he is on both counts (it is his song, after all)-- "Lotus Eater" has everything we've come to expect from an epic Opeth song and more, and fucked up and odd it is indeed.

Opeth - WatershedThe track begins with Åkerfeldt humming a plaintive melody over a counter-melody played on what sounds to be a bassoon before the band tears into more familiar Opeth territory. But 'familiar' it does not stay for long-- around halfway through, "Lotus Eater" takes a turn for a 'weird organ grinder' aesthetic, and ultimately returns to the original peculiar bassoon/organ melody before dissolving into a murmur of multiple voices and eerie screeching. The song itself sounds much better than our clumsy description, we assure you.

"Lotus Eater" is free for the taking, while Watershed's first 'official' single, "Porcelain Heart," will be available for purchase tomorrow from Amazon.

Watershed is out June 3.

Crusty Clip of the Week: Opeth - Demon of the Fall

Crusty Clip of the Week

Every Wednesday, your hosts each post a suitably stale video clip that we think needs to be revisited. Click here for more Crusty Clips. Got a clip you think we should post? Send it to crustcake@gmail.com

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

Ask five Opeth fans which album is the band's best and you'll likely get five different answers. For me, Opeth's earlier efforts, while respectable, merely suggested the greatness that was to follow, and, not counting Damnation, each of their last three albums has trumped the one that came before.

That said, I'd like to highlight one of the band's earlier moments of brilliance. "Demon of the Fall" off their third album, My Arms, Your Hearse, is a sonic journey. Beginning dark and aggressive, the song ultimately resolves in one of the most gorgeous melodic moments in Opeth's history. If you don't have this album, I strongly recommend snagging the MP3 below and then blogsearching it picking it up wherever it is that you steal purchase music.

Oh, and in the event that you've been living in your parents' basement under a rock the past several months, take note that Opeth will be unleashing their ninth LP, Watershed, on June 3rd. We'll surely be lucky if it trumps Ghost Reveries. Is this starting to get annoying?

Holy muthafuckin metal mania-- 2008 is starting to heat up!

Stockholm's finest, the mighty Opeth are making the rounds in Stateside in '08 as part of the 'Progressive Nation' tour. Also on the bill: Dream Theater, 3, and Between the Buried and Me, who were in the Big Apple last fall. Tickets are starting to pop up for some of the dates, but no NYC or LA tix available yet. Soon.

Opeth

May 2 - Los Angeles, CA - Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, 3, Dream Theater @ Gibson Amphitheater

May 21 - New York, NY - Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, 3, Dream Theater @ Terminal 5
May 22 - New York, NY - Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, 3, Dream Theater @ Terminal 5
Opeth will be releasing Watershed, their highly-anticipated ninth studio LP, on June 3 via Roadrunner.

Speaking of highly-anticipated forthcoming albums, Miami thunder-pop extraordinaires Torche have made available a track from their sophomore LP, Meanderthal, which is due out a week following The Sword's mighty second coming. Check out the track, called "Piranha," at Torche's MySpace. It's got teeth.

Looks like we're getting a healthier dose of Torche this year-- Meanderthal has 13 tracks, three more than on their debut and six more than on last year's In Return. Meanderthal can't come soon enough-- the grooves on my In Return 10" are starting to wear out.

Still no NYC or LA dates, but Torche will be in the Hydrahead showcase at SXSW. If you're lucky enough to be going down to Austin, be sure to check out Solid PR's Showcase as well.

Appearing at the Maryland Deathfest (5/23 - 5/28): Disfear-- whose Live the Storm has set the bar for metal in '08-- Anaal Nathrakh (their only scheduled US appearance)-- whose Hell is Empty, and all the Devils are Here made beatmasterspeech's top ten of last year-- and a bunch of brutally-named bands to boot (e.g. Torsofuck, Squash Bowels, Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition). Tix on sale now.

And for our friends on the left coast, there's LA Murderfest 4.0 (4/18 - 4/20). The lineup is quite astounding, including The Red Chord, Impaled, Genghis Tron, Magrudergrind, Vital Remains, Trap Them, human-hating vegetarians Cattle Decapitation, crustcake favorites Baroness, legendary grind pioneers Extreme Noise Terror, the mighty Converge, and more. Tickets will be available soon.

Not to worry, New Yorkers-- Converge, The Red Chord, Genghis Tron, and Baroness will be hitting our neck of the woods as well, on April Fool's Day.
April 1 - New York, NY - Converge, The Red Chord, Genghis Tron, Baroness @ Blender Theater
Trap Them will also be swinging through NYC, first on March 12 (with locals Tournament, who made little impression on me when I saw them last year) and then again on June 16 with Deathwish labelmates Killing the Dream.
March 12 - New York, NY - Trap Them, Tournament @ Charleston
June 16
- New York, NY - Trap Them, Killing the Dream @ Knitting Factory
So, it looks like I have a bit of a conundrum... You see, hardcore heros (and beatmasterspeech and Tomas Lindberg faves) Tragedy will be in town on my birthday, May 2. Also playing that same night? Ministry and Meshuggah. Luckily, M&M are playing the night before, May 1, as well. Also luckily, May 2 falls on a Friday this year, so I can make it a one-two punch of hardcore aggression and industrial+uber-technical metal mayhem without having to drag my ass into work all hungover. Happy birthday to me!
May 2 - New York, NY - Tragedy , Systematic Death , Government Warning , Disnihil @ Knitting Factory (tix)

April 5 - Los Angeles, CA - Ministry, Meshuggah @ House of Blues
April 6 - Los Angeles, CA - Ministry, Meshuggah @ House of Blues

May 1 - New York, NY - Ministry, Meshuggah @ Irving Plaza (tix)
May 2 - New York, NY - Ministry, Meshuggah @ Irving Plaza (tix)
Still with me? Chicago instru-metalists Pelican are hitting the road with Black Cobra and Unearthly Trance (whose Electrocution is out March 18 via Relapse).
May 4 - Brooklyn, NY - Pelican, Black Cobra, Unearthly Trance @ Music Hall Of Williamsburg (tix)
May 29 - Hollywood, CA - Pelican, Black Cobra, Unearthly Trance, Thrice, Circa Survive @ Avalon
Looks like I'll have a chance to make up for cutting out early onFury and Flames Hate Eternal the last time they came to town-- they'll be back in NYC on April 28, this time with Soilent Green and blackened-NWOBHM-thrashers Skeletonwitch. Hate Eternal's Fury and Flames is out tomorrow on Metal Blade. Fury and Flames' cover are was done by the talented Paul Romano (Mastodon, Dead to Fall, Earth).

Hate Eternal recently released the David-Brodsky-directed, Brooklyn-warehouse-set video for the song "Bringer of Storms."

And finally, speaking of Earth, Dylan Carlson and Co.'s sixth album hits stores next Tuesday. Via Brooklyn Vegan:
Dylan Carlson & Earth will release their latest opus "The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull" on Feb 26th, a twangy, dark western soundtrack-y effort that serves as a likely follow-up to last year's "Hibernaculum" and even features appearances on four tracks by the awesome Bill Frisell.

Earth - The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull

[MP3] Trap Them - "They Followed the Scent of Jihad All the Way to Thieves' Paradise"
[MP3] Earth - "Omens and Portents I: The Driver"
