Boris have been tapped as support for a brief Canadian/Midwestern US tour with seminal industrial act Nine Inch Nails. The string of shows will begin in Ontario and end in a march through Minnesota and Iowa. It is nice to see Boris really taking advantage of their time here in the states, mixing in a couple shows without NIN on what could be off days (with Boris as headliners).
Boris recently headlined the East Village Radio Festival here in NYC, and our friends at Brooklyn Vegan got some great pictures of the event. Check it out, know what to expect, read more for the dates.

Crustcake Picks - New Music 8/4

So. You may have noticed that things have slowed down around here recently. If you haven't, you're not paying attention. We won't bore you with the rather, uh, boring details as to why, but suffice it to say that we're back at something close to full strength now. In the coming months, things will be tweaked and adjusted, old columns will die and new ones will emerge, we might even see a total makeover! But, most importantly, we're still here and we ain't going anywhere.
Down to business... We missed a few weeks of new releases, so let's round up the good 'uns here. Boris' Smile is finally available on wax (a proper review of that will be forthcoming, along with a few other much-overdue reviews) and Fucked Up's Year Of The Pig came out on Matador (review here).
Tomorrow, check out Ceremony's Still, Nothing Moves You (fucking punk rawk!) or Krisiun's Southern Storm (brutal Brazilians). Oh, and the new Zozobra (Caleb Scofield, Cave In) is out tomorrow Really, Cave In should just get back together. Clouds, Zozobra, both decent. Stove Bredsky? Not a clue... But remember that lost Cave In track MetalSucks posted (re-posted below) back in June? Yeah, Cave In should really get back together...

Monday Metal Update 5/4

Nine Inch Nails take the lead for the second Monday Metal Update in a row. Last week we linked to NIN's new single, "Discipline," (and posted an awesome, evidently fan-made video for the song) and mentioned that Trent posted the message "2 Weeks!" on his blog back on April 28th. Well, two weeks from April 28th is today, and lo and behold, as predicted, we get a new album! It's called The Slip and it's free. And it's good.
Download: Nine Inch Nails - The Slip [MP3 Album]
The Slip will also be released physically (CD and vinyl) sometime in July.
[Earth]
Attention New York readers!!! Self-Titled Magazine has a pair of tickets for tomorrow's Earth show at the Knitting Factory, and if you act fast you just might be able to score them.
Bullets:
• Psychedelic Black Metallers (or something like that) Nachtmystium currently have two tracks from their forthcoming album Assassins streaming on their MySpace page. We compel you to listen to them. Assassins will be out on June 10th in the US (Century Media) and June 23rd elsewhere (Candlelight).
• Boston.TV hooked up with quite a few bands at the New England Metal and Hardcore Fest. We already posted one of the interviews (which we will not do in the future because we can't figure out how to make all that gibberish on the bottom of their player widget disappear), but you can check out their interview with Skeletonwitch right here.
• New York grind trio ASRA (Alleged Satanic Ritual Abuse) have inked a deal with Black Box Recordings for the release of their debut album The Way of All Flesh on July 8th.
• Yahoo has ranked the 25 Best and 25 Worst hair metal bands of all time. Seems like they could've saved themselves some time and effort and just rolled both those lists into one. [via Idolator]
That's it for us today, happy Monday!

I have good news, better news and even betterer news. The good news? The Sword's monumental second offering Gods of the Earth is currently streaming in its entirety over at the band's MySpace. And the betterer news? Said east coast dates are with Torche, who's Meanderthal is currently rocking my face right off. Gods of the Earth is out tomorrow, and Meanderthal is out next Tuesday.

Crustcake Picks - New Music 3/4

An nice mix of new music this week.
Our picks:
Envy - A Dead Sinking Story [Amazon]
Ladyhawk - Shots [Amazon]
Leadbelly - Masterworks [Amazon]
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig [Amazon]
Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I-IV [NIN.com]
Vverevvolf Grehv - Zombie Aesthetic [Amazon]
Alright, let's just go down the list one by one...
For those who don't know, Envy is a Japanese hardcore band with a heavy post-rock influence. Atsuo (Boris) digs them, and that's enough for us. Pick up their album A Dead Sinking Story tomorrow.
Download: Envy - "Go Mad and Mark" [MP3]
Ladyhawk's Shots is a much-needed dose of dirty rock 'n roll. Ladyhawk made a documentary about the making of Shots.
Let Me Be Fictional: A Documentary about Ladyhawk:
Download: Ladyhawk - "I Don't Always Know What You're Saying"
We love the blues and we love Leadbelly, but where to begin?! Shit... I mean, with this guy any of compilation would be a decent start-- it's best to pick out songs you dig and find a comp that fits. "C.C. Rider," "Black Snake Moan," "Goodnight Irene," and "Boll Weevil" are some of his more popular tunes. Crustcake readers are probably more familiar with Nirvana's take on Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" from the MTV Unplugged in New York album. Tomorrow's Masterworks release contains 18 classic Leadbelly tracks and is as good a place as any to start with this blues master.
Download: Leadbelly - "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have a new one out tomorrow, Dig, Lazarus, Dig, which has, not surprisingly, been receiving rave reviews all around. The video for "Dig, Lazarus, Dig" = awesome.

Download: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - "Dig, Lazarus, Dig"
Ok, so technically this Nine Inch Nails 'album', Ghosts I-IV, is not a Tuesday release-- it was unleashed on Sunday-- but it's surely worth mentioning. From the press release:
Nine Inch Nails presents Ghosts I - IV, a brand new 36 track instrumental collection available right now. Almost two hours of new music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I - IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.
Trent Reznor explains, "I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."
Download: Nine Inch Nails - "Ghosts I"
And finally, Vverevvolf Grehv... We don't know much about this other than that it is the brainchild of The Faint guitarist Dapose, who is Vverevvolf Grehv's lone member. Check out some tracks on the MySpace.
For more new music, head to Largehearted Boy or Prefix.

The A/V Connection - An Introduction

by Joey Angerone
The audiovisual connection in art is one that dates back to the earliest forms of entertainment. From the drum circles and chants of the ancient Aztecs that were paired with the extravagant costumes and dance of the tribesmen to when, in 1931 Charlie Chaplin created the score for City Lights all by himself because he wasn’t sure who’s job it actually was! And even though the earliest films were silent, they were released with cue sheets, or scores that the theatre bands could play.
Compare that to modern times where a large portion of a film's budget might be spent on complex orchestral arrangements or complete soundtracks written by prominent artists. The evolution of music in film is just as intriguing as the evolution of film itself.
Think of your favorite movie. Now try to imagine that movie without the score, or music. Not quite the same. The sounds and music within a film help to make more of an impact, or elevate certain scenes to new heights. Imagine the shower scene in Psycho without the repetitive screeching violins that made it so popular.
Truth is, the moving images we call film and the music that compliments them go hand in hand. For me, the best films always seem to produce the best soundtracks. Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, and Stand By Me are all four-star standout films, and all of them have had top-selling soundtracks. We all know that a great movie can take a scene and add a song that makes it so powerful, or funny that every time you hear that song on the radio, it will remind you of that particular scene.
Take "Nights In White Satin" by the Moody Blues. Robert DeNiro saw the genius of the song and utilized it in his directorial debut, A Bronx Tale. The juxtaposition of the emotional ballad over an extremely violent street fight makes for one of the most powerful audiovisual connections ever produced. The orchestral section of the song combines with the already intense, slowed-down visuals of bikers being beaten to a bloody pulp to add an extra element of drama.
Now, thanks to huge budgets and extremely talented directors, composers, and music supervisors, modern cinema has pushed this audiovisual medium to new heights. Take the movie 300 for example. This film has the type of music that can literally drive a man to the edge of madness. String and timpani sections that are so full and lush, and orchestral sections that are so penetrating, it sounds like the Devil himself started a band with Mozart composing and Keith Moon on drums.
These prolific sounds paired up with the crisp visuals and profound dialogue of the film are, in my mind, what contributed to the film's success. The trailer alone, with Nine Inch Nails' "Just Like You Imagined" was enough to make you cream-jean right in your seat.
300 - Trailer:
So blow the dust off those old classics, light up that doobie, and keep those eyes and ears peeled. Go with anything by Scorsese. As a matter of fact, go straight to Casino. It’s the film that Jesus would have made if he were an Italian-American director with bushy eyebrows living in the 20th century.
