Crustcake Picks - New Music 6/10

by cruscake gerf (NYC)
So, lemme tell ya what just happened. I was perusing my usual resources to see what new music is coming out tomorrow in an attempt to put together this post. I saw that Disturbed's new album will be out tomorrow, and do you know what happened then? I found myself unconsciously clicking over to iTunes and throwing on Ire Works.
I guess Weinman and Co.'s little PR plan worked, eh?
On the real though, tomorrow sees the release of Nachtmystium's Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1, and it's a must-have. Check out "Assassins" and "Your True Enemy" at the band's MySpace page and then check out the whole fucking record tomorrow. Unclassifiable.
I'm a bit torn on A Storm of Light's debut, And We Wept the Black Ocean Within. It's either a second-rate Neurosis knock-off or a fantastic record, and I can't decide which. I've been listening to it quite a bit lately though, so I'm leaning towards the latter. And even if Mr. Graham and his co-conspirators are drawing an excessive amount of influence from Neurosis, they're doing it exceptionally well. And We Wept excels at creating a dark, dismal nautical mood: creaking, groaning ship sounds and an actual fog horn compliment desolate guitars and anguished vocals in a stew of epic seafaring proportions. It's out tomorrow, but personally I'm holding out hopes for a vinyl release. Just look at this artwork.
Also out tomorrow, Pentemple O))) Presents:In May of 2007 thee mighty SUNN 0))) embarked on a Pacific Rim tour. The lineup for this tour included the core sunn 0))) duo: Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley plus T.O.S. (Moog), Oren Ambarchi (analog effects and supplemental guitar) and vokillist Attila Csihar. Upon arrival in Melbourne, Australia, sunn 0))) invited one of their favorite black metal artists: Striborg over from Tasmania (!!!) to collaborate with them during their show. This unholy meeting went over very well and the inaugural ritual was a warm up gig at the Toft in Town club one evening before the larger gig at the Hi-Fi Bar (w/ brethren: Boris).
The results of this collaboration was a completely improvisational, vicious audio and visual assault. Striborg really blew all of us way with not only his wicked vocal invocations but also his incredibly skillful drumming! This was among the first time that sunn 0))) had worked with live drums and the outcome was completely unprecedented. The whole event was recorded live to 24-track/multi-track. Afterwards Oren Ambarchi edited, sequenced and overhauled the EQ to make it as brutal as possible. This blackened low-end psychedelic war is not for the faint of heart!
This cd release is strictly limited to 3,000 machine numbered copies. It's available from Southern Lord.

Flick Friday - Cancer Bats, Shadows Fall, Nachtmystium

Alright party people. Let's kick this edition of Flick Friday off with the new video from Cancer Bats. The Toronto metallic hardcore four-piece released Hail Destroyer on April 22nd, and this is the video for the album's title track.
Cancer Bats - "Hail Destroyer":
Fuck yeah, that was rad. Now, on to something a little less... fresh. You see, there's this band you may have heard of called Shadows Fall. We stopped paying attention to them years ago, but every now and again they give us a reason (e.g. a new video) to see what they're up to. The Bostonians just released the video for "Forevermore" (we wanted to make a 'Nevermore' joke but it didn't work out), off their 2007 album Threads of Life. Meh. Wake us up when it's over... zzzzz...
Shadows Fall - "Forevermore":
Lastly, head over to MetalKult where you can check out some in-studio footage of the recording of an album that is anything but a 'meh,' Nachtmystium's Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1. One of the best albums of 2008 so far, by far.

Monday Metal Update 5/4

Nine Inch Nails take the lead for the second Monday Metal Update in a row. Last week we linked to NIN's new single, "Discipline," (and posted an awesome, evidently fan-made video for the song) and mentioned that Trent posted the message "2 Weeks!" on his blog back on April 28th. Well, two weeks from April 28th is today, and lo and behold, as predicted, we get a new album! It's called The Slip and it's free. And it's good.
Download: Nine Inch Nails - The Slip [MP3 Album]
The Slip will also be released physically (CD and vinyl) sometime in July.
[Earth]
Attention New York readers!!! Self-Titled Magazine has a pair of tickets for tomorrow's Earth show at the Knitting Factory, and if you act fast you just might be able to score them.
Bullets:
• Psychedelic Black Metallers (or something like that) Nachtmystium currently have two tracks from their forthcoming album Assassins streaming on their MySpace page. We compel you to listen to them. Assassins will be out on June 10th in the US (Century Media) and June 23rd elsewhere (Candlelight).
• Boston.TV hooked up with quite a few bands at the New England Metal and Hardcore Fest. We already posted one of the interviews (which we will not do in the future because we can't figure out how to make all that gibberish on the bottom of their player widget disappear), but you can check out their interview with Skeletonwitch right here.
• New York grind trio ASRA (Alleged Satanic Ritual Abuse) have inked a deal with Black Box Recordings for the release of their debut album The Way of All Flesh on July 8th.
• Yahoo has ranked the 25 Best and 25 Worst hair metal bands of all time. Seems like they could've saved themselves some time and effort and just rolled both those lists into one. [via Idolator]

Crustcake Picks - LA Shows 3/20 - 3/26

by beatmasterspeech (LA)
Ok people, I’m fucking swamped with work right now but I care about y'all (as much as passive blogger can) and I want to throw some shit out there so people can get pumped on live music.
Tonight, Relax Bar plays host to highly praised crusty blackened Atlanta outfit Withered who will be supported by local favorites The Funeral Pyre.
The Funeral Pyre - "Wounds":
Withered - "Silent Grave":
Also tonight, get your head smashed at the Key Club with Nile, The Faceless, Suicide Silence, and Nachtmystium. Nile has never let me down in terms of limitless death metal, and what else can be said about Nachmystium? You’ll find yourself humming their riffs for the rest of the week.
Download: Nile - "Lashed to The Slave Stick" [MP3]
Download: Suicide Silence - "Ending Is The Beginning" [MP3]
Saturday, you'll be at Tony’s Bar seeing Intronaut, Yakuza, and The Fucking Wrath (oh shit!!!). If you still haven’t gotten your fix of sweep arpeggios and blast beats, stop by The Whiskey and be pummeled into submission by techy grind masters Beneath The Massacre.
Download: Yakuza - "Cancer of Industry" [MP3]
Download: Beneath The Massacre - "Society’s Disposable Son" [MP3]
Oh yeah, hip hop poet Saul Williams is at The Troubadour on Saturday as well if you need to mix things up a bit.

Thursday 3/20 - Nile, Suicide Silence, The Faceless, Nachtmystium @ Key Club [tix]

Crustcake Picks - New Music 1/29

Tomorrow sees the release of The Mars Volta's much-anticipated or not-at-all-anticipated (depending on your experience with 2006's Amputechture and 2005's Frances the Mute) fourth LP, The Bedlam in Goliath.
Also tomorrow, Hydrahead will be re-releasing Xasthur's 2001 demo, A Gate Through Bloodstained Mirrors. Xasthur's lone member, a mysterious fellow known as Malefic, has collaborated with Nachtmystium and Sunn O))) but has said that Xasthur will never play live.
Also, mewithoutYou's Catch for Us the Foxes (a favorite of crustcake's beatmasterspeech) will be available on vinyl for, as far as we can tell, the first time.
Lastly, there are a few best-ofs that might be of interest including The Doors, John Lee Hooker, Charles Mingus, Obituary, Suffocation, Sugar Ray... ahh, just making sure you're paying attention!
No, but seriously we are huge Sugar Ray fans. I mean c'mon, how can you not love this (warning: watching the following video in its entirety could be hazardous to your health):
Yeah.
