New Meshuggah Video - "Bleed"

Well, it's here... The music video that was soooo important that it was preceded by a trailer. The video for Meshuggah's "Bleed."
From our point of view, it's pretty simple: "Bleed" fucking rips and Meshuggah, well they're Meshuggah, but we have no idea what the hell is going on in this video. Though we're pretty sure that whatever it is, it's deep, man.
Meshuggah - "Bleed":
Meshuggah released obZen on March 10th. The Swedish time-twisters will be playing a string of shows in Europe this summer, make the jump for the details.

Flick Friday - Meshuggah, Turisas, Some Weird Girl

Who the hell are Meshuggah to think that they can get away with releasing a trailer for their forthcoming music video? Really?! A trailer? For a product that will only be a few minutes long anyway?
It probably wasn't their idea, though. Likely it was the 'stroke of genius' of someone over at Nuclear Blast. But it seems to have worked, because here we are typing about it and copy/pasting the YouTube embed code... We're such suckers.
Meshuggah - "Bleed" (trailer)"
Yesterday, we had a discussion with ourselves as to whether Hämeenlinna, Finland's Turisas is 'epic triumphant battle metal' or simply 'folk metal.' Maybe this footage from the band's recent Orangevale, CA show will help settle the debate.
Turisas - Live:
And then, there's this...
Bye.

Alright New York party people, quick update on upcoming shows fer ya... The calendar feature I mentioned last week is in the works, it just ain't ready to roll yet. Ah, the joys of Blogger... We'll get that up and running as soon as possible, and let me tell you, it's gonna be schweet.

Crusty Clip of the Week: Meshuggah - "New Millennium Cyanide Christ"

Crusty Clip - Guest Blog! Robert Pasbani of the renowned Metal Injection is here to bring you this week's Crusty Clip. Click here for more Crusty Clips. Got a clip you think we should post? Send it to crustcake@gmail.com
by Robert Pasbani
Meshuggah's "New Millennium Cyanide Christ" is one of the greatest metal videos ever made. There, I said it.
In a genre dominated by small budgets that typically beget shitty performance videos, "New Millennium Cyanide Christ" rises above. First things first-- the song is killer. Try not banging your head feverishly while watching this video. Then you have the band, who you'd expect take themselves pretty seriously (after all... they are MESHHHUGGGAAAH!!!!!). Yet, they are acting much like you and your friends would act when you're really wasted, which I'm sure is pretty much how this video was conceived. Enjoy...

Crustcake Picks - LA Shows 4/3 - 4/9

by beatmasterspeech (LA)
If once is not enough for you, how 'bout three times? That's right, Ministry and Meshuggah are playing three back-to-back shows this coming weekend at the HoB Sunset (find me there Friday, I will be wearing a black shirt and jeans). Appropriately titled 'C U LaTour,' this tour will be the last for Ministry; they are hanging up the old road dog boots. It's gonna be one hell of a show with Ministry capping it off with a two and a half hour set! Check this quote from Al Jourgensen:
"A Ministry tour is a traveling circus, When we roll into town, everyone hides their daughters, but the freaks roll out the red carpet and a friend or two pops up on stage to add some spice and mayhem to the show. We never know who's gonna walk through the dressing room door at sound check. We rehearse a bunch of 'extra' songs just in case so-and-so shows up..."Download: Ministry – "Let's Go" [MP3]
Download: Meshuggah – "Paralyzing Ignorance" [MP3]
Remember Primus? You better! Well it may not be Primus, but it's a good chunk of them showing up Friday night at the Wiltern... And by 'good chunk,' I mean 'one'-- that is, the one and only Les Claypool. Now, he's done a ton of other projects besides Primus so I'm not sure what to expect; however, good musician + cool twangy voice = good show. On a sidenote, Les Claypool is doing what looks like a comedic take on the popular Rockumentary format with National Lampoon. Looks like someone is making fun of hippies!!! See the trailer for Electric Apricot – The Quest for Festeroo at Claypool's site. Oh Yeah! Let’s try that two word description thing again: Les Claypool = Frets Suck!
And on a quick note... Go get fuzzed out with Fu Manchu Saturday at the up-close-and-intimate Troubadour then cap the crustcake concert week off with some fancy footwork inspired by RJD2 on the ones and twos (man that was lame... or was it?). One more chance for the two word game! Are you getting sick of it? Fu Manchu = Bud Brothers; RJD2 = DJ Shadow??? Ooooooh, snap!

Crustcake Picks - New Music 3/11

A little bit of the metal and a little bit of the hip hop this week. We found the following new releases interesting...
Dark Fortress - Eidolon [Amazon]
Proggy black metal... the debut was good, I was actually spinning it frequently about two weeks ago-- has many strong points, but some super boring riffs thrown in… I’m very much interested in hearing the new one, they have a good ear for fast picking hypnotic riffs. -- beatmasterspeechDel Tha Funkee Homosapien - Eleventh Hour [Amazon]
Del's flow is as unique as ever and if the production isn't as jaw-dropping as his Deltron 3030 tracks, I am still psyched enough to listen to some great lyrical flow backed by instrumentation more interesting than the majority of what passes for rap these days...I say "dig it". -- Burning DervishMeshuggah - obZen [Amazon]
Download: Del that Funkee Homosapien - "Bubble Pop" [MP3]
See our review.Snoop Dogg - Ego Trippin' [Amazon]
The truth of the matter is Snoop's ninth album bares no resemblance to its intended outcome: it was supposed to be an uncharacteristically solo effort (in contrast to all of his previous albums) with no guest rappers or singers, [b]ut you would be foolish to expect something "different" from a brand artist like Snoop Dogg. -- Dan NishimotoZimmers Hole - When You Were Shouting at the Devil, We Were in League with Satan [Amazon]
Featuring members of Strapping Young Lad, Zimmers Hole have fun with metal. I mean, check the album title. If you like SYL’s humor, this one goes one step further or goes to eleven or is one louder… you get the point. -- beatmasterspeechFor more new music, head to Largehearted Boy or Prefix.

Crustcake Reviews: Meshuggah - 'obZen'

by crustcake gerf (NYC)
Welcome back, Tomas Haake. It was quite impressive how natural (natural for extreme metal, anyway) the programmed drums sounded on 2005's Catch Thirtythree, but listening to Meshuggah's latest, obZen, it's clear that Haake brings something to the table that no drum machine-- programmed by the man himself or not-- can ever achieve. Haake's performance on obZen, the band's sixth full-length, is technically near-perfect, but it's also decidedly human. It's got that human feel and groove that no computer could ever faithfully recreate...

Monday Metal Update

by crustcake gerf (NYC)
Holy muthafuckin metal mania-- 2008 is starting to heat up!
Stockholm's finest, the mighty Opeth are making the rounds in Stateside in '08 as part of the 'Progressive Nation' tour. Also on the bill: Dream Theater, 3, and Between the Buried and Me, who were in the Big Apple last fall. Tickets are starting to pop up for some of the dates, but no NYC or LA tix available yet. Soon.
May 2 - Los Angeles, CA - Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, 3, Dream Theater @ Gibson AmphitheaterOpeth will be releasing Watershed, their highly-anticipated ninth studio LP, on June 3 via Roadrunner.
May 21 - New York, NY - Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, 3, Dream Theater @ Terminal 5
May 22 - New York, NY - Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, 3, Dream Theater @ Terminal 5
Speaking of highly-anticipated forthcoming albums, Miami thunder-pop extraordinaires Torche have made available a track from their sophomore LP, Meanderthal, which is due out a week following The Sword's mighty second coming. Check out the track, called "Piranha," at Torche's MySpace. It's got teeth.
Looks like we're getting a healthier dose of Torche this year-- Meanderthal has 13 tracks, three more than on their debut and six more than on last year's In Return. Meanderthal can't come soon enough-- the grooves on my In Return 10" are starting to wear out.
Still no NYC or LA dates, but Torche will be in the Hydrahead showcase at SXSW. If you're lucky enough to be going down to Austin, be sure to check out Solid PR's Showcase as well.
Solid PR - 2008 SXSW Showcase - Friday March 14th @ The Scoot Inn in Austin, TX @ 6pm
Outdoor Stage:If, like us, you can't afford to get down to Austin, not to worry. Our friends in the east can choose from the New England Metal and Hardcore Fest in Worcester, MA, or the Maryland Deathfest, in... Maryland.

Appearing at the Maryland Deathfest (5/23 - 5/28): Disfear-- whose Live the Storm has set the bar for metal in '08-- Anaal Nathrakh (their only scheduled US appearance)-- whose Hell is Empty, and all the Devils are Here made beatmasterspeech's top ten of last year-- and a bunch of brutally-named bands to boot (e.g. Torsofuck, Squash Bowels, Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition). Tix on sale now.
And for our friends on the left coast, there's LA Murderfest 4.0 (4/18 - 4/20). The lineup is quite astounding, including The Red Chord, Impaled, Genghis Tron, Magrudergrind, Vital Remains, Trap Them, human-hating vegetarians Cattle Decapitation, crustcake favorites Baroness, legendary grind pioneers Extreme Noise Terror, the mighty Converge, and more. Tickets will be available soon.
Not to worry, New Yorkers-- Converge, The Red Chord, Genghis Tron, and Baroness will be hitting our neck of the woods as well, on April Fool's Day.
April 1 - New York, NY - Converge, The Red Chord, Genghis Tron, Baroness @ Blender TheaterTrap Them will also be swinging through NYC, first on March 12 (with locals Tournament, who made little impression on me when I saw them last year) and then again on June 16 with Deathwish labelmates Killing the Dream.
March 12 - New York, NY - Trap Them, Tournament @ CharlestonSo, it looks like I have a bit of a conundrum... You see, hardcore heros (and beatmasterspeech and Tomas Lindberg faves) Tragedy will be in town on my birthday, May 2. Also playing that same night? Ministry and Meshuggah. Luckily, M&M are playing the night before, May 1, as well. Also luckily, May 2 falls on a Friday this year, so I can make it a one-two punch of hardcore aggression and industrial+uber-technical metal mayhem without having to drag my ass into work all hungover. Happy birthday to me!
June 16 - New York, NY - Trap Them, Killing the Dream @ Knitting Factory
May 2 - New York, NY - Tragedy , Systematic Death , Government Warning , Disnihil @ Knitting Factory (tix)Still with me? Chicago instru-metalists Pelican are hitting the road with Black Cobra and Unearthly Trance (whose Electrocution is out March 18 via Relapse).
April 5 - Los Angeles, CA - Ministry, Meshuggah @ House of Blues
April 6 - Los Angeles, CA - Ministry, Meshuggah @ House of Blues
May 1 - New York, NY - Ministry, Meshuggah @ Irving Plaza (tix)
May 2 - New York, NY - Ministry, Meshuggah @ Irving Plaza (tix)
May 4 - Brooklyn, NY - Pelican, Black Cobra, Unearthly Trance @ Music Hall Of Williamsburg (tix)Looks like I'll have a chance to make up for cutting out early on
May 29 - Hollywood, CA - Pelican, Black Cobra, Unearthly Trance, Thrice, Circa Survive @ Avalon
Hate Eternal the last time they came to town-- they'll be back in NYC on April 28, this time with Soilent Green and blackened-NWOBHM-thrashers Skeletonwitch. Hate Eternal's Fury and Flames is out tomorrow on Metal Blade. Fury and Flames' cover are was done by the talented Paul Romano (Mastodon, Dead to Fall, Earth).Hate Eternal recently released the David-Brodsky-directed, Brooklyn-warehouse-set video for the song "Bringer of Storms."
And finally, speaking of Earth, Dylan Carlson and Co.'s sixth album hits stores next Tuesday. Via Brooklyn Vegan:
Dylan Carlson & Earth will release their latest opus "The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull" on Feb 26th, a twangy, dark western soundtrack-y effort that serves as a likely follow-up to last year's "Hibernaculum" and even features appearances on four tracks by the awesome Bill Frisell.
