Flick Friday - Judas Priest, Metallica, Whitechapel

This new Judas Priest video is a hack job of what looks like cut scenes from a B-level 1999 computer game. And it doesn't help that the song is a total snoozathon.
Sorry again about the North America-only embed, but rest assured fellow multinationals-- you aren't missing much. Does it piss anyone else off that HBB gets so many video premieres?
Judas Priest - "War":
Watch Metallica play "Creeping Death" at the 2008 Rock Am Ring Festival in Nürburgring, Germany, if you want to. We don't really care whether you watch or not. Pffft.
Metallica - "Creeping Death":
Watch more here, if you want to.
Whitechapel is the latest band copping the Red Chord / Despised Icon (pig squeals and all) deathcore sound. Like Despised Icon, this Tennessee-based band is a sextet, but in this case, rather than two vocalists, they've opted for three guitarists. Can you say 'superfluous'?
Whitechapel - "This Is Exile":And now, we're gonna pass the mic to Rufus: Apparently Avenged Sevenfold were as embarrassed by their new video for their shitty 'country' song as Rufus was, so they decided to pull it from YouTube. If you didn't get a chance to witness the train wreck, we will repost it here when it's available.
Hi, I'm Rufus. If you want to induce vomiting (say, to lose weight... or because you like the taste of puke... or just for dramatic effect), watch this:

Flick Friday - Isis, Keep of Kalessin, Warbringer, Cryptopsy

This week, we've got our bases covered. Below, you'll find post-metal, black metal, thrash metal, and brutal death metal. A little something for everyone. Party!
This first video ain't exactly new, but Pitchfork.TV just added it to their rotation and it's Isis, so we couldn't really avoid posting it. The video is shoegazey high-frame-rate footage of a suicide jumper's fall juxtaposed with Discovery-channel-esque clips of a developing fetus. Stay tuned to the end for some brutal face-melting.
Isis - "Holy Tears":
Our favorite Lords of the Rings, Keep of Kalessin, have just released a video for their song "Ascendant." It's epic (something about "battle the ancients" and "eternity"), and fans/wind were used quite liberally.
Keep of Kalessin - "Ascendant":
Next up, check this great interview with Warbringer conducted by Metal Injection.
Metal Injection: There's a bit of a thrash revival...
Warbringer: That's what they're calling it. We have a different attitude about it though. We didn't start the band going 'let's revive the corpse of 80's thrash metal.' We were like 'let's play metal that is really metal.'
Warbringer - Interview with Metal Injection:
If Kurt Ballou is metal's most in-demand engineer/producer, then David Brodsky must be its most in-demand video director. It seems like he's directed roughly one of every two new metal videos that funnel down the tubes. Must be good to have a steady stream of income doing what you love. Here's Mr. Brodsky's latest, the new video from Montreal's Cryptopsy.
Drummer Flo Mounier, who is one of the fastest motherfuckers out there, says, "This is a straight up, brutal and in-your-face punishing live performance clip that pulls no punches. It’s basically two minutes of unabashed aggression and we had a lot of fun doing it."
The video is a HBB premiere, so apologies to those not in North America.
Cryptopsy - "Worship Your Demons":

Flick Friday - Cancer Bats, Shadows Fall, Nachtmystium

Alright party people. Let's kick this edition of Flick Friday off with the new video from Cancer Bats. The Toronto metallic hardcore four-piece released Hail Destroyer on April 22nd, and this is the video for the album's title track.
Cancer Bats - "Hail Destroyer":
Fuck yeah, that was rad. Now, on to something a little less... fresh. You see, there's this band you may have heard of called Shadows Fall. We stopped paying attention to them years ago, but every now and again they give us a reason (e.g. a new video) to see what they're up to. The Bostonians just released the video for "Forevermore" (we wanted to make a 'Nevermore' joke but it didn't work out), off their 2007 album Threads of Life. Meh. Wake us up when it's over... zzzzz...
Shadows Fall - "Forevermore":
Lastly, head over to MetalKult where you can check out some in-studio footage of the recording of an album that is anything but a 'meh,' Nachtmystium's Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1. One of the best albums of 2008 so far, by far.

Flick Friday - Botch, Machine Head, Dream Evil

There may still be one whole work day left in the week, but much like yourself, we've already checked out. So let's begin the weekend with some good old fashioned destruction, courtesy of Botch, Hydra Head, and Metal Injection.
This is a version of the encore at the last ever Botch performance that is quite different from what appears on the DVD of that show. Botch returned to the stage and were joined by members of Harkonen and Playing Enemy for the final song. Of note in this version is the scuffle to keep Botch bassist Brian Cook from being ejected from the stage by security, as well as Mr. John Pettibone's final destruction of the stage lights at the end. All in all it ended as it should, amidst chaos, destruction, and confusion.Botch - Final Show Encore (alt. take):
Machine Head debuted their new video for the song "Halo" this week. Machine Head's career seems to be rebounding a bit after their turn of the century missteps, but even still this song is pretty weak. We'll try and find another embed for readers outside the US, but if you can't see this video you're not missing much.
Machine Head - "Halo":
Alright, so we know power metal is probably not the average crustcake reader's preferred metal sub-genre, but everyone ought to be able to enjoy this video on one level or another. Don't be embarrassed if you involuntarily start pumping your fist. And pay close attention to the lyrics, they're... awesome.
Dream Evil - "The Book of Heavy Metal":
Alright people. That's all we got fer ya today, time to go out and get schmammered!

Flick Friday - Black Metal, The Red Chord, Children Of Bodom

Vice's VBS.TV produced a documentary on Black Metal. Black Metal Jim was unavailable for comment.
True Norwegian Black Metal - Part 1 of 5:
Watch the rest of the documentary at VBS.TV and check out photographer Peter Beste's Black Metal photo essay at NPR. Yes, National Public Radio.
Metal Injection posted a video of The Red Chord playing "Dreaming In Dog Years" off 2002's Fused Together in Revolving Doors. Incidentally, though it was inspired by a 1942 nightclub fire in The Red Chord's hometown of Boston, Fused was released eleven months and a day before the infamous Station Nightclub fire in Rhode Island. Prophecy?
No. We don't believe in that sort of nonsense. "Dreaming In Dog Years" is still the best song they've ever written, though. "It's not gonna be alright!"
The Red Chord - "Dreaming In Dog Years":
Children of Bodom released a video for "Hellhounds on My Trail," off their recently released Blooddrunk. Axl Rosenberg comments:"Hellhounds on My Trail" is a pretty killer song, but the video isn't the best thing in the world. I mean, I guess you do what you can on a budget. But mostly it seems like the band let some five year old just go nuts on the lighting board while some dude filmed it. Maybe next time they'll at least bring back the chick from the "Are You Dead Yet?" video.

Flick Friday - Meshuggah, Turisas, Some Weird Girl

Who the hell are Meshuggah to think that they can get away with releasing a trailer for their forthcoming music video? Really?! A trailer? For a product that will only be a few minutes long anyway?
It probably wasn't their idea, though. Likely it was the 'stroke of genius' of someone over at Nuclear Blast. But it seems to have worked, because here we are typing about it and copy/pasting the YouTube embed code... We're such suckers.
Meshuggah - "Bleed" (trailer)"
Yesterday, we had a discussion with ourselves as to whether Hämeenlinna, Finland's Turisas is 'epic triumphant battle metal' or simply 'folk metal.' Maybe this footage from the band's recent Orangevale, CA show will help settle the debate.

Flick Friday - Avenged Sevenfold, Municipal Waste, Saviours, Arsis

Taking a page from StSanders' book, YouTube user mintcheerios has uploaded a video of Orange County 'heavy metal' band Avenged Sevenfold 'performing' a 'song.' Ironically (like our quotes), it was MetalSucks who tipped us off to this tasty little clip-- ironically because Avenged Sevenfold's eponymous 2007 release topped Axl and Vince's best-of lists last year.
Wallow in the genius, fellow crustcakers:
Next up, check out this interview with Municipal Waste at last weekend's New England Metal and Hardcore Fest. Boston.TV also conducted interviews with Despised Icon and Meshuggah.
Waaaaay back in October, when crustcake started, we caught Saviours during CMJ at Brooklyn's Luna Lounge. We didn't know it at the time, but MetalKult was there with their cameras, and they've finally published the footage. Songs include "Crucifire," "Into Abaddon," and "Firewake Angel."
Hey, Arsis, we're on to you. Posting your new video once without animation, and again with. All to get twice the coverage, twice the mileage... Don't think we're gonna fall for it ok we fell for it.

Flick Friday - Special Edition!

Alright, faithful readers, follow these instructions carefully:
1.) Retrieve two Q-tips and set aside.
2.) Cue Slayer's "Raining Blood" on your iTunes, CD player, or turntable and pause at the beginning. Other classic metal songs will do as well.
Ready? Ok. Here's Bullet For My Valentine's new video for their song "Waking the Demon." You don't have to watch the whole thing, just a minute or two. Be brave.
Interesting. Did you catch that kid in the Iron Maiden shirt? You did? Good. Wanna know what the dudes in Bullet For My Valentine were doing circa eight years ago? Behold, after the jump.
Is it over? Clean out those earholes with the Q-tips, then cue "Raining Blood" and crank the volume to cleanse.
Now, if you'll excuse us we are going outside to dry heave for a few minutes. We'll be back in a jiffy.

Flick Friday - Zimmer's Hole, Century, Arsis

With the addition of drum-god Gene Hoglan to their ranks for their third album, When You Were Shouting at the Devil...We Were in League With Satan, comedy-thrashers Zimmer's Hole have really upped the ante. It seems Gene has a penchant for comedy-- Dethklok put him on the drum stool for their record-breaking debut album and water-testing inaugural tour last year (no official confirmation of his involvement with Dethklok's 2008 headlining stint though) and he has been a longtime member of Strapping Young Lad.
Zimmer's Hole also features two other members of Strapping Young Lad-- Jed Simon and Byron Stroud, who's also currently holding down the low notes for Fear Factory. So, for all intents and purposes, Zimmer's Hole is SYL with 'The Heathen' in place of Devin Townsend, but Zimmer's Hole take the humor a great deal further, including penning their own hilarious ten commandments (after the jump).
The band's recently released video for the new album's title track is the most metal thing we've seen since, oh, probably that Lair of the Minotaur masterpiece, 'cept Zimmer's Hole are totally joking and LOTM are dead serious, we reckon.
Zimmer's Hole - "When You Were Shouting At The Devil...We Were In League With Satan":
Next up, check out this video from Pennsylvania hardcore up-and-comers Century. The song is angular, metallic, and melodic, and is at least partially reminiscent of The Esoteric's With The Sureness of Sleepwalking (2005, Prosthetic). Incidentally, Prosthetic is also the label behind Century's upcoming second album, Black Ocean, which is out April 29.
Century - "Black Ocean":
If you like your death metal the way Kevin Talley does-- that is, with an auxiliary piccolo snare-- then you probably love Arsis. Check out their video for "We Are the Nightmare," off their recently released new album of the same name.
Arsis - "We Are the Nightmare":
Alright, let's be frank-- we're only posting this last clip out of a sense of necessity. We can't very well not post the trailer for a Bruce Dickinson-penned film now, can we? But while we're being frank, we ought to tell you that we didn't really watch this trailer, we don't really know what this movie is about, and we're not actually planning on seeing it.

Flick Friday - Animosity, Soilent Green, Beach House

by crustcake gerf (NYC)
Animosity's (not bobblehead edition) new video for their song "Toothgrinder" was directed by the band's vocalist, Leo Miller, and filmed in their hometown of San Francisco.
"We are all pretty sick of these retarded music videos of bands playing in dark warehouses or on top of snowy mountains and whatnot. It made more sense to make a video that is more relative to our band and our lives. The whole day [of filming] was a blast," Miller told Headbanger's Blog.
Animosity - "Toothgrinder":
Frolicking about San Fran on a bright sunny day isn't very metal, guys. Perhaps in the future you ought to consider filming in a dark warehouse or on a snow-capped mountaintop or something.
Buy: Animosity - Animal [Amazon]
NOLA sludge metallers Soilent Green have a troubled history. The band has been involved in multiple automobile accidents; in 2004 former bassist Scott Williams was killed in an apparent murder/suicide; and a year later former vocalist Glen Rambo was killed in Hurricane Katrina.
Soilent Green will be releasing their new album, Inevitable Collapse in the Presence of Conviction, next Tuesday via Metal Blade.
"[The album is about] the basic idea of no hope. It's in reference to the history of Soilent Green and also just life in general," vocalist Ben Falgoust notes. "Everybody is always picturing things with a happy ending, but life's not always like that."
Soilent Green - "Antioxidant":

Time to take the energy down a notch or twenty. Beach House, who we like to refer to as the Earth of indie rock, just released a new video for the song "Gila" off their recently released sophomore album Devotion. It's dark, a little creepy, and if it happens to be raining where you are, it'll provide the perfect soundtrack.

The folks at MetalInjection just posted some interview and performance footage from last November's Saints and Sinners festival, including this great feature on Between the Buried and Me.
Between the Buried and Me - Interview and Live Footage:
Buy: Between the Buried and Me - Colors [Amazon]
Lair of the Minotaur have really upped the ante with their very NSFW new video for "War Metal Battle Master." MetalSucks' Vince Neilstein sums it up:
I mean for fuck’s sake, the video features men in armor pulverizing each other with enormous swords and other assorted medieval weaponry, blood spewing from decapitated torsos, and naked chicks eating flesh off of severed legs and dead bodies.Lair of the Minotaur - "War Metal Battle Master" (NSFW):

We love Black Metal (the fake commercial kind, anyway-- we leave the legit stuff to Black Metal Jim) and in our opinion corpse paint really adds to the, um, 'evilness' of the whole live experience. But the intro sequence to this video for Keep of Kalessin's "Crown of the Kings" ruins the magick (see what we did there?) a bit. It's like watching a warrior suit up for battle; suddenly he starts to put on eyeliner? Maybe that should be done off camera? We'd rather just assume the band was so evil that they actually wake up with black eye sockets. But hey, Keep of Kalessin recently got added to the Behemoth and Dimmu Borgir tour, so they must be doing something right in the makeup department.
Keep of Kalessin - "Crown of the Kings":
Buy: Keep of Kalessin - Armada [Amazon]
This clip has been floating around for a bit, but it's amusing enough to post here for those of you who may have missed it. It's just too bad it's air, and not actually death metal that gets this little pup all riled up. Thanks to NiNjASLiCE for this one!

Flick Friday - Boris, The Roots

by crustcake gerf (NYC)
Other than what can be inferred from the title, I really have no idea what Boris' "My Neighbor Satan" is about because it's, you know, in Japanese. But this whimsical video is one of the most minimalistic 'music videos' I've ever seen-- five minutes and twenty five seconds, one take, static camera, and mostly static, out-of-focus performers.
You'd think that those factors combined would make for a dull video, and that click-happy web surfers would be quick to move on, but I find myself strangely drawn in. It's like a zen thing, or whatever.
And what is that contraption Wata's playing? Looks (and sounds) like some sort of MIDI guitar or something.
Boris - "My Neighbor Satan":
How do you make a cubicled office space cool? Add The Roots, of course. This video for the track "Get Busy" includes white collars, ties, copy machines, and an afro pick flash drive. Oh, and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Yes!
The song is gritty and grimy, with a heavy beat. Dig it.

Three weeks ago we jumped on the indie-blog-bandwagon and posted a video of Brooklyn's Yeasayer jamming "2080" on Conan. Here's another clip from the band, a takeaway show from La Blogotheque that finds the band in a cappella mode on the Paris subway.
As someone who lives in New York City and deals with annoying subway 'musicians' on a daily basis (trust me, there are few things worse than heading down into the subway after a long night of drinking only to be greeted by some jackoff beating on his collection of buckets, pot, pans, auto parts, and the fucking kitchen sink) I can actually appreciate this performance. Listening to the reaction of the bystanders, it seems they did too.

The godfathers of alternative rock, R.E.M., are back with their 14th studio LP on April 1st. Their video for lead single "Supernatural Superserious" is pretty lamesauce, but the song is swell. If you're an old school R.E.M. fan, that is. Metalheads may not dig, but we've got something on deck for y'all.

Flick Friday - Saviours, Dillinger Escape Plan, Yeasayer

by crustcake gerf (NYC)
Minutes after last week's 'Flick Friday' went live Headbanger's Blog premiered the new (and first) video from Oakland, CA's Saviours.
A tip o' the hat to all involved for allowing the video to run the full length of the song (five minutes and forty eight seconds, to be exact). Much like the song itself, the video for "Narcotic Sea" (directed by Dante Della Maggiore) is all over the place. From trippy Tron-evoking digital grids to epic landscape shots to straight up performance clips, this video certainly doesn't get boring despite a run time double that of a typical music video.
Saviours - "Narcotic Sea":
MetalInjection.net recently hired a huge-ass camera crew and filmed Dillinger Escape Plan, A Life Once Lost, Genghis Tron, and Shat on tour. Check out all the interviews and footage here, and check out DEP ripping "Sugar Coated Sour" off their genre-defining album, Calculating Infinity right here:
Dillinger Escape Plan - "Sugar Coated Sour":
Alright, this band, Yeasayer, has been lighting up the blogosphere lately (Exhibit A; Exhibit B; Exhibit C). They didn't exactly blow me away when I caught them at CMJ last October, but their recent performance on Conan O'Brien was pretty swell. "My favorite song in a long time," said Conan.
