5ive are actually two and the two create huge doomtastic riffs (did I just write doomtastic?). These guys fill up the space with no extra room for a bass player (except that one time they recorded and toured for the album The Hemophiliac Dream with bassist Jeff Caxide of Isis).
This is the first track off their Versus EP. Check out the chunky riffs towards the end! What other doomish band can you name that uses a vibrator for guitar effects? Lay back and the let the groove take you...

The Melvins released their 16th (!) studio full-length this week, so we thought we'd revisit something from the band's major label heyday. "Queen" comes from 1994's Stoner Witch, and of note in this video:
• Bassist Mark D's face is mostly hidden behind that big ol' hat, and he hardly moves the whole time. The Melvins - "Queen" (1994):
• Buzz Osborne's hair is brown!
• Check out Dale Crover's unusual drum setup: a floor tom in place of a snare drum, a big clangy bell instead of a ride cymbal, and what looks to be a rototom frame that he's beating on, in addition to his signature 'crasher'. Cool shit.

Mix some Isis, Cave In, Converge, Zozobra and you’ll get the rarely-seen-live super group of sorts, Old Man Gloom. I’m sure all of you readers are familiar with this band to a degree, but if you’re like me you anticipate a chance to catch the magic live. I was super excited about them hitting the West Coast earlier this year for what would have been their 10th live appearance and more, but then it was canceled and my parade was rained on. But I got love for you Old Man Gloom and now I got this entire set to watch until you guys give it one more go on the road. Pretty please?

Electric Wizard. Dorset doom. There ain't much to say we ain't said already. This is dirty, drugged-out doom, and you'd do well to have their entire catalog at your fingertips in iTunes (or your preferred equivalent).
The crusty clip below is a performance of "Supercoven," side A of Wizard's 1998 EP of the same name. The original pressings are long since out of print and the Southern Lord reissue (which contains two bonus tracks) appears to be out of stock at the moment, but you can find "Supercoven" in MP3 format below. Check back with Southern Lord, and hopefully they'll restock soon so you can get your hands on the EP's B side and bonus tracks.

Amon Amarth are Viking Metal's flag bearers. They lay on very thick mid-tempo grooves with some of the most memorable melody lines. This track is taken from one of their best albums start to finish, Versus The World. The clip is taken from their amazingly well-produced DVD Wrath Of The Norsemen. Go forth and conquer...

As you may have heard by now, Mastodon will be abandoning Matt Bayles to work with producer Brendan O'Brien for their forthcoming album. O'Brien's resume is a varied one; he's worked with Korn, Bruce Springsteen, Audioslave, The Offspring, and Wire, to name a few. We're not sure what Matt Bayles did so wrong to be replaced by the dude who worked with Korn, but we're sure it must have been terrible.
So with that, here's the video for the best song Mastodon ever wrote.

What's that? Both crusty clips feature Crowbar today? But if any band deserves the double attention around these parts, it is the godfathers of sludge metal themselves. I won't go so far as my comrade to say that Crowbar is my "favorite band of all time and can do no wrong," but I will say that they kick mega tons of ass.
You may remember this one from Beavis and Butthead; check out a young Craig Nunenmacher, who is now the skinsman for Black Label Society. Oh, and check out all the stink-faces. It's stink-face city all up in this video! (the beginning is unfortunately cut off a bit)

I'm just gonna throw this out there, Crowbar rules my shit! Favorite band of all time and can do no wrong in my book. Kirk probably makes more money with Down and now his Crow-Breed morph Kingdom of Sorrow, but I don't care because CROWBAR RULES MY SHIT! And fucking check out Jimmy Bower on the drums (EyeHateGod, Superjoint Ritual, Down, Mystic Krewe of the Clearlight). Crowbar and EyeHateGod gave birth to NOLA sludge. End of story.

I like what Cult of Luna has been doing on recent albums; I mean it's obvious they are developing their sound. But a part of me misses the raw dirtiness of the first two records, my favorite being The Beyond. That entire record just sounds mean and nasty compared to both releases since.
Cult of Luna - "The Watchtower":
Bring back that dirty bass tone!
The band has posted the title track from their forthcoming album, Eternal Kingdom, on their MySpace page. Sounds like if I want the rawness and dirtiness of their earlier stuff I'll just have to listen to, you know, their earlier stuff...

When Genghis Tron's recent release Board Up The House came out on Relapse, collective drooling ensued from the metal community. We actually haven't stopped drooling, as the album just gets better with each listen. For this week's Crusty Clip I decided to bring everyone's attention back to another artist who managed to mix heavy music with electronica and not have it... you know... suck.

Comets On Fire. They're what Phish would sound like if Phish sounded like Comets On Fire. And they're what Dead Meadow would sound like if Dead Meadow were a bit more peculiar.
In this performance of "Pussy Foot the Duke" from their 2004 Sub Pop-released LP Blue Cathedral, the whole ensemble really has an effortless, weightless air to it, as if playing this song is the most natural thing they'd ever done. And I'm no guitarist, but damn, the way Ethan Miller controls that instrument is captivating.
Stay tuned for some deep shit at the end, man.

Whether they're singin' about muscle cars or traveling to the center of the earth, Fu Manchu are most likely always stooooneeedddd. Most 'stoner rock' fanatics cite the band's In Search Of album as the pinnacle of their stoner career (see Decibel's 'Stoner Rock' issue, September 2007), and I do agree, but there are certainly some gems on that record's follow-up, The Action Is Go. This jam makes me wish I had a '69 Camaro to cruise the Pacific Coast Highway. And a joint.

Nasum was grindtastic! Before the tragic death of founding guitarist/vocalist Mieszko Talarczyk in an insane tsunami that struck Thailand in December of 2004, Nasum was at the top of the grind game for more than a decade. Their tone is quite unique among grind bands, and Nasum is one of, if not the only, grind band with melody that really seeps above the brutality.
RIP, Mieszko.
Nasum - "Scoop":

Meshuggah's "New Millennium Cyanide Christ" is one of the greatest metal videos ever made. There, I said it.
In a genre dominated by small budgets that typically beget shitty performance videos, "New Millennium Cyanide Christ" rises above. First things first-- the song is killer. Try not banging your head feverishly while watching this video. Then you have the band, who you'd expect take themselves pretty seriously (after all... they are MESHHHUGGGAAAH!!!!!). Yet, they are acting much like you and your friends would act when you're really wasted, which I'm sure is pretty much how this video was conceived. Enjoy...

We like Black Metal here at the 'cake, especially when it involves orchestras and... and um... eyeliner... maybe. Emperor is one of the best known Black Metal bands from the genre's heyday. I like to think that Ihsahn is a bit of a musical genius; helping bring in the symphonic element to black metal. Emperor's members were mixed up in that whole Euronymous / Count Grishnakh thing which is a bit interesting and sort of silly at the same time.
Anyways, I was a bit sheltered from Black Metal growing up in the south; it was mainly Pantera, Crowbar, C.O.C. and the like up in our faces-- the thin sound of Black Metal didn't much agree with our southern ears. Then, all of sudden I move up to Boston, wander in someone's dorm room blasting this evil sound, and I look to the TV and there it is: this band Emperor playing "I Am The Black Wizards." This clip is pulled from the Emperial Live Ceremony DVD that came out back in 2000. Once I was turned on to Emperor, I was instantly hooked and spent much time collecting all of their releases as well as any solo projects from the members I could find (Zyklon, Ihsahn, Peccatum).
