As if you didn't know it already, At The Gates are in New York City at this very moment. Tomas and his friends are probably bogged down in endless interviews and press-related events today... That or they're still sleeping. The melodic death metal inventors played the first of two NYC shows last night, and Blabbermouth has the setlist. The second long-soldout show is tonight, but you can still find tickets at face value on Craigslist. Oh, and Municipal Waste is warming up the stage, but get there early-- the neo-thrashers hit the downbeat at shortly after 8pm last night.
Hopefully, though, you saw ATG last night in order to clear your schedule today for Torche, Boris, and Clouds at Webster Hall. If you're not going to see At The Gates tonight, go see Torche and Boris! I cannot stress this enough-- GO SEE TORCHE. It's required for all crustcake readers. Have a full report on my desk in the morning-- six pages, single spaced, 10-point font-- or you get an F.
Make the jump for more, and please let us know if we missed anything.
On Saturday, friend of the site Jaclyn Sheer will be showcasing her photography at Death By Audio. Why should you give a shit? Because Ms. Sheer has secured a kickass lineup of four of New York's best metallic ensembles for you to enjoy while guzzling brews from DBA's semi-legal bar: Krallice, Wetnurse, Bloody Panda, and Tombs. It's only $7, and it's not like you have anything better to do on Saturday.
NYC show picks 7/10 - 7/16:Thursday 7/10 - At The Gates, Darkest Hour, Municipal Waste @ The Fillmore at Irving Plaza [sold out]
Thursday 7/10 - Torche, Boris, Clouds @ Webster Hall [$18]

Is there an upcoming NYC metal show you think we should mention? Hit us at crustcake@gmail.com and we'll see what we can do for you. We accept bribes. And by bribes we mean free booze.
It's summer in New York, and you know what that means-- a crapload of free shows. Granted, most of these free shows (e.g. Central Park Summerstage, South Street Seaport, McCarren Park Pool, etc.) are of the indie rock variety-- metal is sadly behind on this trend. Probably because it's more difficult to get sponsors and advertising partners for metal events, and somebody has to pay for these free shows. Even tickets for the metal shows/tours with big corporate underwriters (e.g. Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival) are still fucking expensive. Not that I would ever go see a show sponsored by the son of Michael Weiner aka Michael Savage anyway.
So, let's get down to business. The Summer Slaughter tour is in town today (Summer's Laughter?), details for that below. Also tonight, Grails and Nadja at Knitting Factory (win tickets from BV). Saturday, go check out Cable, Wetnurse, Century, and Vultures at Ace of Clubs and then on Sunday Russian Circles, Daughters, and The Austerity Program will be at Music Hall of Williamsburg.
Make the jump for a full listing, and please let us know if we missed anything.
NYC show picks 6/26 - 7/2:Thursday 6/26 - The Black Dahlia Murder, Kataklysm, Vader, Cryptopsy, The Faceless, Despised Icon, Aborted, Born of Osiris, Psycroptic, Whitechapel @ The Fillmore at Irving Plaza [$25]

Hey crustcakers. So we have a new plan with these 'Crustcake Picks Shows' posts. Let me explain-- moving forward, we'll be focusing these posts more on their respective city's local music scenes, rather than just giving you a heads-up on tours coming through town. We think these posts will be more valuable that way, and we want to support local scenes.
Thus far, these show updates have only been for NYC and LA, but there is certainly the possibility of adding more cities in the future. If you live somewhere with a healthy local underground music scene and you want to write a weekly update on shows in your area, please get in touch with us. Let us know where you live and tell us a little bit about the local scene there.
Anyway, here are this week's NYC shows. Tonight, Bloody Panda is getting their death-ritual on at fittingly-named Death By Audio while The End Records is presenting another installment of their N.W.O.B.H.M. (New Wave of Brooklyn Heavy metal) series, this time featuring Goes Cube, Pax Cecilia, Naam.
Oh and check this out: Chef, er, Issac Hayes is totally playing a free show at Prospect Park Bandshell tonight! Can you dig it?
Friday, go see Hull at Fontana's with Ayurveda, Denim Venom, and Clean Teeth, and then on Monday take your pick between 'Precious Metal' at Lit Lounge (feat. Harpoon, Muzzler, Romans, and Bazooka Christ) or Transistor Transistor, Reclaim the Crown, Killing the Dream, Trap Them, and The Carrier at Knitting Factory.
Busy week.

Alright, here's what's going on in the Big Apple this week...
Peter Beste, the photographer who spent some time in Norway documenting the Black Metal scene there, has his photos in a Chelsea art gallery. Because Chelsea and Black Metal go together like... two things that go together...
We kinda missed the boat on this-- the exhibit opened back in early May-- but there's still time to check it out. The gallery is open tomorrow and Saturday at 11am, more information here (thanks Jeso).
Sunday, Blacklisted will be at Knitting Factory and then on Monday, head to Lit Lounge for what's sure to be a killer show with Torrential Downpour, Rising Up / Rising Down, and Bohemian Grove.
Then on Tuesday, check out Inswarm, Hull, and Christian Death at Knitting Factory. Now I like Hull-- they're a very promising band-- but the show's a bit too pricey for my tastes. Actually, at $20 at the door this show is ridiculously overpriced. Hull is a bit out of place on the bill anyhow, I recommend skipping this one.
Take the jump for details.
NYC show picks 6/5 - 6/11:Friday 6/6 & Saturday 6/7 - Peter Beste - True Norwegian Black Metal photo gallery [info]

The Metal Gods hath smiled upon us this week, in the form of a monu-metal influx of heavy. Crust punk, D-Beat, stoner rock, folk-metal, battle-metal, grindcore, and more coming at you live from the Big Apple.
With so much to choose from, I've narrowed down my focus to two key shows: tonight's Paganfest USA stop at BB King's (sponsored by our colleagues over at MetalSucks) and Monday's Knitting Factory show featuring The Ocean (the German one, not the Canadian one), Kylesa, Lair of the Minotaur, and Withered.
The Ocean - "Queen of the Food Chain":

It's being reported that Saturday's Torche/Sword show is already sold out. A bummer if you didn't get tickets in advance, but a boon for the bands, especially Torche who deserve all the recognition and support in the world after the masterstroke that was Meanderthal. The show will be opened by Priestbird (read our interview) spin-off Lapdog of Satan.
One show (or rather, two) that you can still grab tickets for is the Progressive Nation double-header at Terminal 5 next week. In addition to headliners and creators Dream Theater, the tour features Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and 3.
And now, a special announcement from crustcake hip-hop dilettante Scott Roc:
Come Saturday I'll be knocking back tacos and beers with friends out in the desert, but if I was in New York I'd go see Yo Majesty at South Paw. The Miami booty bass group has been blogged about pretty extensively, so I won't go into it much here other than to say you don't have many opportunities to see a group of lesbians rock a show topless ("Your boy 50 Cent does his show with his shirt off. Why can't I?" - JWL B of Yo Majesty), rapping about kryptonite pussy over the kind of beats the famously misogynistic 2 Live Crew used.Download: Yo Majesty "Club Action" [MP3]

As we mentioned on Tuesday, Boston's Have Heart will be in town tomorrow for what's sure to be a raucous show at the 'Fortress of Solidudes' in Brooklyn.
Here's a taste:
Also this week, two chances to catch Band-worshiping (as in The) Canadians Ladyhawk. Once at Mercury Lounge tomorrow, and then again on Saturday at Union Hall. Ladyhawk's second LP, Shots, came out on March 4th via Jagjaguar.

Alright New York party people, quick update on upcoming shows fer ya... The calendar feature I mentioned last week is in the works, it just ain't ready to roll yet. Ah, the joys of Blogger... We'll get that up and running as soon as possible, and let me tell you, it's gonna be schweet.
In the meantime, there are plenty of killer shows to check out in the Big Apple, starting with Ministry's C U LaTour with Meshuggah tonight and tomorrow. Also tomorrow, and highly recommended, Tragedy at Knitting Factory. This one's already sold out though, so I hope you got your tickets earlier.
Sunday, choose from Coliseum with Victims, Trash Talk, and locals Tombs and Attake at Europa, or Pelican with Priestbird down the street in Williamsburg.
Then, on Tuesday we'll be at Knitting Factory for a chat with Dylan Carlson before Earth takes the stage and mesmerizes us with their post-apocalyptic spaghetti western soundtrack.
Details after the jump.

Hey New Yahkahs, here's an update on upcoming shows for ya. Soon, we will be moving these show listings to their own space on the site and updating them in real time rather than once a week like we do now. Hopefully this will be more helpful to our readers, and we also realize many of our readers aren't in LA or New York, so we might even be adding show calendars for other cities as well in the near future. Maybe. Or we might get drunk and forget.
Last time Hate Eternal played, I had to cut out early on them to catch Dead Meadow. I promised to make it up to them, and on Monday I will. They're playing at BB King's with Soilent Green (new album recently) and badass blackened-NWOBHM-thrashers Skeletonwitch.
Hate Eternal - "Bringer of Storms":
Skeletonwitch - "Onward to Battle":
Get techy with Behold... The Arctopus twice this week; once at Silent Barn in Ridgewood and again with Dead Child and Bostonians Irepress at Europa in Greenpoint.
Behold... The Arctopus - "Transient Exuberance":

A double dose of Matador this week-- Dead Meadow hit the Big Apple again, as does Jay Reatard. Both come with the official crustcake seal of approval, and Mr. Reatard will be doubling up with a gig in Manhattan and a gig in Brooklyn, so you've no real excuse to miss his rapid-fire tune toting.
Louisville, KY rockers Dead Child are on the up and up after getting a little boost from Quarterstick Records. They couldn't have chosen a worse single to introduce the band, though-- "Sweet Chariot" is a nu-metal-tinged travesty, and nearly put me off to the band entirely. I'm a forgiving guy, though, so I checked out the other two cuts on the band's MySpace, both of which are entirely listenable. Especially "Angel of the Odd." Catch Dead Child at Knitting Factory on Wednesday.
Whatever group of dudes currently calling themselves 'The Misfits' will be in town this week as well, and besides that, there are a host of other shows worth noting, mostly of the less-heavy variety.

With so many badass records hitting your ears recently, you may have let Disfear's early 2008 barnburner Live The Storm fall by the wayside. It's time to give Torche's Meanderthal a rest and start rockin' it D-beat style again, because Disfear will be hitting the road in North America starting next Wednesday in New York where they will be joined by Boston rockers Bloodhorse.

Disfear - "Phantom" (live):
Bloodhorse - "I'm Burned" (live):
Also this week, Allentown, PA's Pissed Jeans. They don't have a website. Or a MySpace. The New York Times won't print their name, because they're a bunch of sissies. Wait... the New York Times wrote up Pissed Jeans?[Pissed Jeans] brings back ’80s memories of hard, slovenly noise, when punk bands realized they could slow down and let their music fall apart a bit. It triggers a deep behavioral response of that era too, before mosh pits became codified.
The Times' Ben Ratliff did indeed write a feature on the enigmatic punk band, which you can and totally should read right here.

Download: Explosions In The Sky - "Your Hand in Mine (live in San Francisco 3/21/08) [MP3]I don't have anything interesting or witty to write about this week's shows, so a simple list will suffice. The cheapest show on my radar is $17 though, so this week might be a good time to go easy on the wallet and skip the live music, for once. You gotta catch up on your record buying anyway, dontcha?
[UPDATE] Holy shit, how could I possibly have forgotten this? Iowa's Modern Life is War is currently on their much-too-soon farewell tour, and they'll be making their NYC stop this Sunday at Knitting Factory. Buy your tickets right fucking now.
NYC show picks 4/3 - 4/9:
Thursday 4/3 - Titan, Bassoon, MegaNeura, Hell's Hills @ Europa [tix]Modern Life Is War - Live @ CBGB - Jan. 4 2004 Part 1-3:
Sunday 4/6 - Modern Life Is War (Last NYC Show Ever), Sioux City Pete and the Beggars, Celebrity Murders, Pregnant @ Knitting Factory [tix]
Sunday 4/6 - Testament, Full Blown Chaos, Nethereal, Martyrd @ BB King's [tix]
Monday 4/7 - Minus the Bear, The Big Sleep, Portugal the Man @ Webster Hall [tix]
Tuesday 4/8 - Explosions in the Sky, Lichens (members of 90 Day Men) @ Terminal 5 [tix]
Ok, turns out I do have something to say. It's no revelation that BB King's isn't exactly the best place to see live music in the city, but they do book certain metal tours that other venues won't touch, so they deserve credit for that. But, seriously... Ok, check it out-- here's the ticket info for the Testament show from their website:
$25.00 AdvanceNow, $25 is probably too expensive for this show, but that's not really what I'm concerned with. What's the fucking deal with these 'VIP Tickets'? More than double the standard ticket cost and you get:
$30.00 Day of Show
$60.00 VIP ticket includes first entry into room at door time and autographed poster.
1.) First entry at door time? Wow, that's a real selling point, guys. Honestly, who the fuck is so eager to get in the goddamn place that early and wait around for an hour anyway? Estimated value: $0.So, what's the total estimated value of this dubious 'VIP Ticket'? Giving BB's the benefit of the doubt, somewhere around $40 ($25 for the ticket itself, $0 for first-entry, and $15 for poster). Fuck that, $60 bucks should at least get you a few drinks or, for the younguns, a meet-and-greet with the band or something. Throw us a freakin' bone, BB's!
2.) A signed poster? That's swell and all, and sometimes I am happy to pay up to $20 or so for a nice silk-screened gig poster, but not without seeing it first! For all you know, this could be a shitty 11x17 promo poster (you know, the kind with space to write in show dates). It is signed though, so... Estimated value: $5 - 15.
[end rant]
P.S. fuck Times Square.

Yeah, so as you can see from the cakes in the oven and this post, I'm on a bit of a Converge kick lately. And it couldn't have been better timing, as these hardcore heroes will be in the Apple this very week, on Tuesday, with The Red Chord, Baroness, and Genghis Tron.
Also up this week, Clouds at Matchless (Greenpoint) on Saturday. Clouds is fronted by Adam McGrath (ex-Cave In) and the band's Stephen-Brodsky-produced Hydra Head debut, Legendary Demo, runs the gamut from blistering rock n' roll to punk energy and even dub. Clouds will be releasing their second offering, We Are Above You, via Hydra Head on June 8th.

Tonight, make your way over to Death By Audio in the 'burg (49 S. 2nd St. btwn. Wythe & Kent) for Boston's Disappearer and Brooklyn's own Tombs. Tombs, much like Disappearer, are direct descendants of the Neur-isis movement, but that's just a lazy over-simplification of their sound. Check out a couple tracks to get an idea...

There's a couple other good gigs going down tonight, and later this week. Nude video aficionados The Cribs are at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight, and New York's favorite hillbilly androids, Susquehanna Industrial Tool & Die Co. (save your breath and just call them 'SIT & Die Co.') will be bringing their trademark ballads, boogies, and blues to Manhattan's Rodeo Bar.
SIT & Die Co. also play the last Thursday of every month at Otto's Shrunken Head, and their vintage rockabilly stylings are 100% authentic, right down to the matching bowties.

Holy shit, Iron Maiden and Van Halen * this week. I'm going to miss both shows, so I'm looking forward to reports from the field.
Monday, 90s experimentalists Today is the Day will be hitting Knitting Factory with Mouth of the Architect, Complete Failure, and Psyopus. I haven't followed Psyopus since 2004's Ideas of Reference, and I have a short attention span for that spazzed out shit, but you really need to hear this song if you haven't yet:

For my money, the best show this week is Witch (J. Mascis) with Graveyard and Titan at Luna Lounge next Wednesday. Luna Lounge is almost always underbooked, and all that cavernous space in there is really a bummer, hopefully there'll be enough Dinosaur Jr. fans there next week to bolster the ranks and fill the place. I'm really looking forward to checking out Graveyard-- if they sound anywhere as good as their record, they could be 2008's Witchcraft.

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows 3/6 - 3/12

(My apologies in advance for the tardiness and laziness of this post)
A few good shows going down this week. Head over to Luna Lounge tonight (better leave now) for my much-loved Junius along with labelmates Constants who are also awesome (think ISIS meets Cave In, but more raw) and Caspian, who want to be Explosions in the Sky real bad. Also tonight, you can catch weirdo-synth-punks (or whatever) at Death By Audio (expect some homoerotic microphone manhandling, among other things).
Friday and/or Saturday, check out Toronto's Nadja, a duo that creates beautifully apocalyptic music at the crossroads of shoegaze, post-rock, and funeral doom.
What else is going on in the Big Apple this week?
NYC show picks 3/6 - 3/12:Thursday 3/6 - An Albatross, The Golden Error, Fun Machine @ Death By Audio
Thursday 3/6 - Constants, Junius, Caspian @ Luna Lounge
Friday 3/7 - Nadja, NWOBHM (New Wave of Brooklyn Heavy Metal), Bloody Panda, Tombs, Tournament, And This Army @ Europa [tix]
Saturday 3/8 - Nadja, Duane Pitre @ Eat Records[MP3] Nadja - "Stays Demons"
[MP3] Junius - "Blood is Bright"
[MP3] Constants - "Walking Dead in East Texas"

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows 2/28 - 3/5

New York's Apes and Androids are much blogged about lately, and with good cause. Sonically they're schizophrenic, but never arbitrary-- they just wear many hats. There's a little Freddy Mercury in there, some Bowie, maybe a little Police, and a bunch of shit that's all their own. I can't recommend their debut Blood Moon enough. They're playing a free show tonight at Hiro Ballroom, and all you gotta do to get in is RSVP. I'd recommend showing up early, though, it could be a hustle at the door.

If you missed Priestbird when they played Mercury Lounge last week, not to worry-- they'll be at Union Pool tomorrow. I never did write a proper review of the Merc. show, but suffice it to say that they played mostly new tunes, and these new tunes were of a bit more personal than much of their past material, particularly the sweeping cinematic tones of Book of Sand. The new songs seem to be lacking the epic feel and grandeur of the old stuff, but I'm excited to hear them again and to eventually hear their recorded incarnations. And tomorrow'll be the second go around for all the new songs, so the band's sure to be a bit more comfortable.
Also this weekend, we've got political hardcore punkers Strike Anywhere, a personal favorite, and drummer-less metallers Genghis Tron, who I've yet to form an opinion on, as well as a sold-out (damn) Roky Erickson gig at Maxwell's.
Tuesday's a big day, with the Beastie Boys at Terminal 5 ($75, ouch) and White Rabbits at Webster Hall. Oh yeah, and fucking Boris at Knitting Factory. You can probably guess where I'll be on Tuesday...
Tough luck if you weren't paying attention before though, as it seems the Boris show has sold out. It may still be possible to snag tickets via the band's special deal with Mondo Kim's and Other Music. Better look into that.
