Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows 6/26 - 7/2

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

Is there an upcoming NYC metal show you think we should mention? Hit us at crustcake@gmail.com and we'll see what we can do for you. We accept bribes. And by bribes we mean free booze.

It's summer in New York, and you know what that means-- a crapload of free shows. Granted, most of these free shows (e.g. Central Park Summerstage, South Street Seaport, McCarren Park Pool, etc.) are of the indie rock variety-- metal is sadly behind on this trend. Probably because it's more difficult to get sponsors and advertising partners for metal events, and somebody has to pay for these free shows. Even tickets for the metal shows/tours with big corporate underwriters (e.g. Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival) are still fucking expensive. Not that I would ever go see a show sponsored by the son of Michael Weiner aka Michael Savage anyway.

So, let's get down to business. The Summer Slaughter tour is in town today (Summer's Laughter?), details for that below. Also tonight, Grails and Nadja at Knitting Factory (win tickets from BV). Saturday, go check out Cable, Wetnurse, Century, and Vultures at Ace of Clubs and then on Sunday Russian Circles, Daughters, and The Austerity Program will be at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Make the jump for a full listing, and please let us know if we missed anything.

Flick Friday - Zimmer's Hole, Century, Arsis

Flick Friday

With the addition of drum-god Gene Hoglan to their ranks for their third album, When You Were Shouting at the Devil...We Were in League With Satan, comedy-thrashers Zimmer's Hole have really upped the ante. It seems Gene has a penchant for comedy-- Dethklok put him on the drum stool for their record-breaking debut album and water-testing inaugural tour last year (no official confirmation of his involvement with Dethklok's 2008 headlining stint though) and he has been a longtime member of Strapping Young Lad.

Zimmer's Hole also features two other members of Strapping Young Lad-- Jed Simon and Byron Stroud, who's also currently holding down the low notes for Fear Factory. So, for all intents and purposes, Zimmer's Hole is SYL with 'The Heathen' in place of Devin Townsend, but Zimmer's Hole take the humor a great deal further, including penning their own hilarious ten commandments (after the jump).

The band's recently released video for the new album's title track is the most metal thing we've seen since, oh, probably that Lair of the Minotaur masterpiece, 'cept Zimmer's Hole are totally joking and LOTM are dead serious, we reckon.

Zimmer's Hole - "When You Were Shouting At The Devil...We Were In League With Satan":

Next up, check out this video from Pennsylvania hardcore up-and-comers Century. The song is angular, metallic, and melodic, and is at least partially reminiscent of The Esoteric's With The Sureness of Sleepwalking (2005, Prosthetic). Incidentally, Prosthetic is also the label behind Century's upcoming second album, Black Ocean, which is out April 29.

Century - "Black Ocean":

If you like your death metal the way Kevin Talley does-- that is, with an auxiliary piccolo snare-- then you probably love Arsis. Check out their video for "We Are the Nightmare," off their recently released new album of the same name.

Arsis - "We Are the Nightmare":

Alright, let's be frank-- we're only posting this last clip out of a sense of necessity. We can't very well not post the trailer for a Bruce Dickinson-penned film now, can we? But while we're being frank, we ought to tell you that we didn't really watch this trailer, we don't really know what this movie is about, and we're not actually planning on seeing it.

Chemical Wedding - Trailer (screenplay by Bruce Dickinson-- yeah, the Bruce Dickinson, the one from Iron Maiden):
