Black Mountain Played Bowery Ballroom

Black Mountain

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

I wasn't there, but EarFarm was.

The band blazed through a set that at first leaned heavily - and sequentially - on tracks from In The Future, lulling the crowd into thinking they'd be playing the entire album in sequential order before shifting gears into "Druganaut" - a standout from their self-titled debut - following an epic version of "Tyrants". The remainder of the set seamlessly mixed old and new into a steaming cauldron of fuzzy, bottom-heavy, organ-drenched psych-rock bliss.

Head to EarFarm for a full review of the show and some live audio/video.

UPDATE: Stereogum was also there.

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

Another big week for shows in the Big Apple. I'll give you a quick overview of the highlights; check out the whole list below for more.

Brooklyn post-rockers The Big Sleep released a new record this week. What do you do when you release a new record? Record release party of course! It's tonight at Mercury Lounge and joining them will be Priestbird (formerly Tarantula AD), who are highly recommended. Each of the three members are multi-instrumentalists, and they weave an epic soundscape of post-modern, neo-classical cinematic art rock.

Priestbird - "Season of the Sun":

Also not to miss-- Sourvein and Zoroaster at the Knitting Factory on Sunday and Russian Circles and Dälek at Maxwell's (Hoboken) Sunday and the Knitting Factory Monday. Check out all the MP3's at the end of this post.

Such Hawks, Such Hounds

Such Hawks, Such Hounds

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

What is heavy? A new documentary called Such Hawks, Such Hounds attempts to answer that question and much more. From the film's MySpace page:

Such Hawks, Such Hounds explores the music and musicians of the American hard rock underground circa 1970-2007. Focus will be on the psychedelic and/or '70s proto-metal-derived styles that have in recent years formed a rich tapestry of unclassifiable sounds.

The film will chart the evolution of these styles and their creative components, while primarily serving as a character study of the musicians themselves—artists seemingly on the fringes of both straight society and hip indie circles. The filmmakers will show how these musicians work and live, and how they sustain careers outside the corporate rock mainstream.

A picture will emerge of a vital art form built on accomplished musicianship and creative ambition—and a story that will appeal to viewers who like the music, and also those who don't.

This is so up our alley it's almost ridiculous. It's as if the filmmakers had crustcake in mind when choosing which bands to interview.

At nearly ten minutes long, the film's 'trailer' is practically a documentary in and of itself, but for fans of heavy music that leans toward the 'stoner' end of the spectrum, it's a must-see (as will be the film proper).

Such Hawks, Such Hounds - Trailer:

So, what is heavy? Here's the recap:

• "Uh..." - Stephen McCarty, Dead Meadow

• "I think of atoms spinning and... the ether..." - Isobel Sollenberger, Bardo Pond

• "A certain type of music that just seems to connect with human beings' DNA..." - Ethan Miller, Comets on Fire

• "I think it's like anything that's super, really far out and creative." - Steve Kille, Dead Meadow

• "It could be anything and that's the beauty of it..." - Stephen McBean, Black Mountain

• "...let's make an ode to the woods." - Josh Martin, Pearls and Brass

Oh, and does Al Cisneros' demeanor not remind you of Eugene Levy's character, Mitch Cohen, in A Mighty Wind?

The film has recently been screened in LA, and reportedly there are more screenings to come, possibly in the Bay Area and hopefully on the east coast as well. We'll let you know the minute we find out.

Crustcake Picks - LA Shows 1/31 - 2/6

Crustcake Picks - LA Shows

Pretty decent week coming up now that the rain has cleared (people treat rain in LA like snow-- they freak out). The Black Dahlia Murder, 3 Inches of Blood, Hate Eternal, and Decrepit Birth will be at Key Club tonight, but the deal is sweeter than it was in NYC with the addition of Seattle's Lesbian, who come highly recommended, to the bill. Aaaaaaaand, since one night with Lesbian is not enough for me, come give me a high five at Relax Bar Saturday evening while we bang heads to Lesbian and Ancestors (my pick of the week).

If you want to get on crustcake gerf's good side, pop on over at The Troubadour Friday night for Delta Spirit.

Next Tuesday is shaping up to be a night of show hopping with Black Mountain playing at the Troubadour and then, down the street a bit, The Knitting Factory will be hosting classic rock giants Blue Cheer (what's left of 'em anyways) to show the new school of stoner rockers how it is done.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that 16 will be screaming at you tomorrow night as well at Relax Bar (not very relaxing).

Show list and mp3s after the jump.

LA Shows 1/31 - 2/6:
