Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows 5/15 - 5/21

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

It's being reported that Saturday's Torche/Sword show is already sold out. A bummer if you didn't get tickets in advance, but a boon for the bands, especially Torche who deserve all the recognition and support in the world after the masterstroke that was Meanderthal. The show will be opened by Priestbird (read our interview) spin-off Lapdog of Satan.

One show (or rather, two) that you can still grab tickets for is the Progressive Nation double-header at Terminal 5 next week. In addition to headliners and creators Dream Theater, the tour features Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and 3.

And now, a special announcement from crustcake hip-hop dilettante Scott Roc:

Come Saturday I'll be knocking back tacos and beers with friends out in the desert, but if I was in New York I'd go see Yo Majesty at South Paw. The Miami booty bass group has been blogged about pretty extensively, so I won't go into it much here other than to say you don't have many opportunities to see a group of lesbians rock a show topless ("Your boy 50 Cent does his show with his shirt off. Why can't I?" - JWL B of Yo Majesty), rapping about kryptonite pussy over the kind of beats the famously misogynistic 2 Live Crew used.

Upcoming show details and ticket info after the jump.

NYC show picks 5/15 - 5/21:
Saturday 5/17 - The Sword, Torche, Stinking Lizaveta, Lapdog of Satan @ Music Hall of Williamsburg [sold out]

Saturday 5/17 - Yo Majesty, Does It Offend You, Yeah? @ South Paw [tix]

Wednesday 5/21 - Dream Theater, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, 3 @ Terminal 5 [tix]

Crustcake Picks - LA Shows 5/1 - 5/7

Crustcake Picks - LA Shows

by beatmasterspeech (LA)

This happens every year, at least according to my not-so-good short term memory. Coachella comes around, and with it all metal shows disappear or go into hiding for like a week. It's as if the influx of hipsters into the so-cal area freaks the metal promoters out so much that they've become accustomed to laying low during the late April / early May concert season. That or it's just too damn expensive to be on the road right now with the cost of gas and shit.

BUT, there is one cool show to keep us sane during these turbulent times. The Progressive Nation 2008 Tour!!! YeePee. Sweep arpeggios, odd time signatures, concept albums, music for musicians, shredders!!! Yay! Alright, let me lay off the sarcasm a bit.

Us crustcake guys pretty much met over a conversation discussing Dream Theater's Scenes from a Memory, so I'm a closet fan. I haven't followed the band since then, but the line up for this tour should seal the deal even for the non Dream Theater believers. 3, Between The Buried And Me, and, wait for it... wait for it... OPETH!

Fuck yeah, the highlight. I’ve have always been an Opeth fan and I will wave that flag proudly. I'm so excited for the new record, everything I've heard so far has been beyond my expectations. So fucking Friday, be there at the Gibson Amphitheater in dreaded Universal City for epic long songs with epic story lines and epic chord progressions and epic beer prices. And OPETH.

Bye.

LA show picks 5/1 - 5/7:

Friday 5/2 - Dream Theater, Opeth, Between The Buried And Me, 3 @ Gibson Amphitheater [tix]

Flick Friday - Between the Buried and Me, Lair of the Minotaur, Keep of Kalessin

Flick Friday

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

The folks at MetalInjection just posted some interview and performance footage from last November's Saints and Sinners festival, including this great feature on Between the Buried and Me.

Between the Buried and Me - Interview and Live Footage:

Buy: Between the Buried and Me - Colors [Amazon]

Lair of the Minotaur have really upped the ante with their very NSFW new video for "War Metal Battle Master." MetalSucks' Vince Neilstein sums it up:

I mean for fuck’s sake, the video features men in armor pulverizing each other with enormous swords and other assorted medieval weaponry, blood spewing from decapitated torsos, and naked chicks eating flesh off of severed legs and dead bodies.

We love Black Metal (the fake commercial kind, anyway-- we leave the legit stuff to Black Metal Jim) and in our opinion corpse paint really adds to the, um, 'evilness' of the whole live experience. But the intro sequence to this video for Keep of Kalessin's "Crown of the Kings" ruins the magick (see what we did there?) a bit. It's like watching a warrior suit up for battle; suddenly he starts to put on eyeliner? Maybe that should be done off camera? We'd rather just assume the band was so evil that they actually wake up with black eye sockets. But hey, Keep of Kalessin recently got added to the Behemoth and Dimmu Borgir tour, so they must be doing something right in the makeup department.

This clip has been floating around for a bit, but it's amusing enough to post here for those of you who may have missed it. It's just too bad it's air, and not actually death metal that gets this little pup all riled up. Thanks to NiNjASLiCE for this one!

Death Metal Puppy:

Any of you metalheads know what song that is? First person to email crustcakecontests@gmail.com with the correct answer gets a copy of The Sword's brand new hunk o' metal, Gods of the Earth.

Between the Buried & Me - Live @ Blender Theater w/ HORSE the Band, Animosity, Giant [10/31/07]

Between the Buried & Me

Halloween in New York City is quite an experience, and a show on Halloween is no exception.

The first band up was Giant from North Carolina. Giant is serious business; no costumes here, just a powerful, epic, crushing wall of sound in the vein of Isis or Pelican. I was enjoying it, but after a few songs, the crowd began to get antsy (maybe their costumes were already getting itchy?).

They started shouting, "Next!" and "You suck!" Giant certainly didn't suck nor did they hog the stage. I think the two tough guys in the crowd dressed like gigantic boobs were getting impatient and started the heckling (you can't please that kind of guy unless you're a girl with huge boobs).

Animosity
Next, Animosity "Bobble Head Edition 2008" almost tore the room in half. Intense and pummeling, there were no complaints from the crowd here. They started chanting "one more set" at the end, and that's pretty impressive for an opening band.

HORSE the Band
[HORSE the Band]

Whatever your feelings are on HORSE the Band (that keyboard can really get up my ass), they should be commended for showmanship. Dressing like Disney characters and decorating the stage with a giant inflatable turkey and horse and carriage, the singer-- in a revealing "Little Mermaid" outfit-- danced the Hukilau to their songs. And more amusing than the keyboardist's typically violent head-banging was his violent head-banging while tripping over the flowing evening gown he was wearing.

Between the Buried & Me
[Between the Buried & Me]

Then the headliners. I've seen Between the Buried & Me a number of times now and I have never been disappointed. I wasn't Between the Buried & Methe least bit surprised to see them headlining a tour since they're impressively skilled musicians. I was looking forward to them having the freedom of a headlining slot where they could play what they felt like (or hopefully what I felt like: a half hour version of "Selkies: The Endless Obsession" from their 2005 release Alaska.

They played their entire new album Colors and I got my "Selkies" as an encore. Honestly I probably could have sat there for another hour just listening. Fantastic! Those hillbillies sure can rock.
