We Crustcakers tag-teamed the At The Gates New York reunion shows this week. For everyone who's outside of NYC we have a clip from the Thursday night show; make sure to check the rest of this tour if you have the chance. (On a side note, when a ticket says "Doors 7:30" that should mean that that's when the fucking doors open; theseseans showed up Wednesday night at 8PM and Toxic Holocaust had already played, packed up, and Municipal Waste were all set up and minutes from going on. Fuck THAT.
At The Gates - Slaughter Of The Soul:
If it seems like the entire crowd was singing along, uh, they were. People in New York who aren't jaded, who knew?
New Dragonforce after the jump...
Dragonforce have released a video for the song "Heroes Of Our Time," from their forthcoming album Ultra Beatdown ('Ultra Beatdown'? Really, guys?) due out August 25th via Roadrunner Records.

I Fucking Did It

by crustcake gerf (NYC)
After a shot of espresso and a stop into the bookstore to kill time (I picked up The Triumph of Evolution and the Failure of Creationism by Niles Eldredge and a copy of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five, which I've really been meaning to read practically forever, especially since I'm a Hoosier), I headed to Webster Hall. When I got there (shortly after 7pm), Clouds were already playing (!), and Torche followed shortly at a quarter to eight or so. Talk about an early show... as one member of Clouds (Adam, I think) mused, "they make more money on the dance club."
Torche was just as good as they were the last time I saw them, though the mix wasn't quite as clear (thankfully it wasn't as bad as the sound at Blender). I picked up a copy of Meanderthal on vinyl, so you can expect a review of that next week, finally (I've been watching the Robotic Empire store like a hawk for this damn record-- it's still not up there, and I'll be damned if I'm gonna import the thing).
Boris and Mr. Kurihara eased into "Flower Sun Rain" around 9pm, and I knew from theseseans' report last night that At The Gates wouldn't take the stage until an hour later (and thankfully The Fillmore is literally a five minute stroll from Webster Hall), so I was able to catch probably about half of the Japanese dream weavers' set before Black Bubblegum and I made a break for it. (thanks for the bev, Chris!)
Minutes later we were at The Fillmore, which was, natch, packed to the brim and emanating the distinct odor of schweaty heavy metal dude armpit. I asked for a 'cheap' beer, having spent nearly all my cash at Webster (and I'll be damned if I'm paying a fucking ATM fee), and was served a $6 Budweiser. I love New York.
At The Gates slaughtered souls for more than an hour-- they were extreeeeeeeme... for 1995-- and though I didn't totally geek out, I did enjoy the chance to catch a glimpse of history. ATG were the masters-- the founders of a movement, the innovators of a sound, a sound so ubiquitous (and so often and poorly counterfeited) today it's hard to imagine the world without these Gothenburg heavy metal heroes.
Sorry for lack of photos. Going to pour myself a glass of whiskey. Goodnight. \m/

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows 7/10 - 7/16

by crustcake gerf (NYC)
As if you didn't know it already, At The Gates are in New York City at this very moment. Tomas and his friends are probably bogged down in endless interviews and press-related events today... That or they're still sleeping. The melodic death metal inventors played the first of two NYC shows last night, and Blabbermouth has the setlist. The second long-soldout show is tonight, but you can still find tickets at face value on Craigslist. Oh, and Municipal Waste is warming up the stage, but get there early-- the neo-thrashers hit the downbeat at shortly after 8pm last night.
Hopefully, though, you saw ATG last night in order to clear your schedule today for Torche, Boris, and Clouds at Webster Hall. If you're not going to see At The Gates tonight, go see Torche and Boris! I cannot stress this enough-- GO SEE TORCHE. It's required for all crustcake readers. Have a full report on my desk in the morning-- six pages, single spaced, 10-point font-- or you get an F.
Make the jump for more, and please let us know if we missed anything.
On Saturday, friend of the site Jaclyn Sheer will be showcasing her photography at Death By Audio. Why should you give a shit? Because Ms. Sheer has secured a kickass lineup of four of New York's best metallic ensembles for you to enjoy while guzzling brews from DBA's semi-legal bar: Krallice, Wetnurse, Bloody Panda, and Tombs. It's only $7, and it's not like you have anything better to do on Saturday.
NYC show picks 7/10 - 7/16:Thursday 7/10 - At The Gates, Darkest Hour, Municipal Waste @ The Fillmore at Irving Plaza [sold out]
Thursday 7/10 - Torche, Boris, Clouds @ Webster Hall [$18]
Saturday 7/12 - Tombs, Bloody Panda, Wetnurse, Krallice @ Death By Audio [$7]

Monday Metal Update 6/9

Our favorite party thrashers, Municipal Waste, have released a video for the song "Sadistic Magician" off their 2007 album The Art of Partying.
[T]he clip features the band performing "Sadistic Magician" inside an extremely volatile nuclear power plant. The plant can't handle the manic energy of MUNICIPAL WASTE and starts falling apart, causing absolute gory mayhem to befall the citizens and wildlife of the areas surrounding it.There's plenty of toxic green ooze in the video (probably from the above barrels), and that's never a bad thing.
Municipal Waste - "Sadistic Magician":
The Waste will be tearing it up on the road next month with At The Gates.
Earache's other throwback thrashers, SSS, have some dates scheduled in Europe.
SSS - 2008 Dates:
21 Jun 2008 Manchester, UK - Central Skatepark #We've said it before and we'll say it again-- Boston's Have Heart are picking up right where Modern Life Is War left off. The hardcore quintet just posted a new track on their MySpace, "Hard Bark on the Family Tree," which comes off their forthcoming album, Songs to Scream at the Sun (July 8th, Bridge 9). They've got a ways to go before they are in the same league as MLIW, but they're on the right track.

We've made our love for Dethklok known around here, and now the New York Times is getting in on the action. Check out their poorly-written and utterly uninteresting feature on Metalocalypse creators Brendan Small and Tommy Blacha here (thanks Kelli).

We mentioned it briefly before, but here's the trailer for Lemmy: The Movie:
"Rock n' roll is Lemmy. Lemmy is rock n' roll!"

[Wetnurse]
Seventh Rule Recordings has announced a September 30 release date for the new full-length album by New York's Wetnurse, Invisible City. The album was recorded and mixed by Martin Bisi (Swans, Helmet) at B.C. Studio in Brooklyn, NY, and was mastered by Alan Douches (Converge, Mastodon) at West West Side Music. Check out a track and the album's cover art here.
New York readers mark your calendars-- Wetnurse will be appearing with Intronaut, Behold... The Arctopus, and Mouth Of The Architect at the Knitting Factory on August 8th.
UK drone-doom death-ritual conjurers Moss will release their new album, Sub Templum, on July 8th via Rise Above Records.

[The Roller]
Austin, TX old-school doomsters The Roller will be releasing their first full-length on June 17th via Monofonus Press. Check out a track off the record:

It's no secret that we dig The Sword. It's also no secret that the band's sophomore album drops on April Fools' Day. The album, Gods of the Earth, is no sophomore slump-- the band has taken their signature proto-metal sound and honed it into an album so badass that its 40-some minutes fly by in what seems like half the time. The band will be heading to the UK for a few dates with Saviours and Black Cobra before heading back stateside for a west coast run with Slough Feg and Brooklyn's Children.

If you're down in Austin, TX right now, you're probably not reading this blog. You're probably out getting hammered, watching some great bands, schmoozing with industry types, etc. But, if you are reading this blog, why? we wanted to let you know about another cool SXSW showcase.
Radar Recordings, Giant Step Productions, and Sargent House are putting on a swell show to close out the festivities this Sunday. The show features Coliseum, Constants, Genghis Tron, Maps and Atlases, Caspian, Russian Circles, crustcake favorites Junius, and a reunited Seneca, among others. It's definitely one of the festival's better showcases.
Download: Junius - "Hiding Knives" [MP3]
Download: Seneca - "Too Late for Yesterday" [MP3]
In other SXSW-related news, MetalSucks is starting rumors.
(Nadja)
Toronto duo Nadja, who played to a small, but captivated audience on Friday in Brooklyn, will be releasing their new album, Desire In Uneasiness, on April 8th. So says the press release:The music on Desire... explores some new territory for the band, the addition of a real live drummer taking the band down some new paths of psychedelic wandering and jazzy atmosphere while maintaining the brutally grinding bass groove and beautifully corrosive shoegazer guitar distortion that makes up Nadja's sound.
Yup, that sounds about right.

Graveyard

Gothenburg, Sweden may be best known for the signature melodic death metal of bands like At The Gates and In Flames, but today there's another sound coming out of the Scandinavian town. Like their brethren Witchcraft, who hail from just up the road in Orebro, Graveyard are out to summon the gods of 70's psychedelia and proto-metal.
Graveyard's eponymous debut (out next Tuesday, 2/19 via Tee Pee Records) is a fantastic first outing and has been in steady rotation around here lately.
Graveyard are playing a couple gigs at SXSW, then heading up to Philadelphia, New York, and Massachusetts before hopping the pond for a full European tour. They play Luna Lounge on March 19th. Check out their MySpace page for more info.

Monday Metal Update

by crustcake gerf (NYC)
At The Gates is Decibel's cover artist for the month of March. Anyone who's been paying attention already knows that the legendary group has made plans to reunite in 2008 for some European festival dates, but it was only recently that it was revealed that the reunited Slaughter of the Soul-era lineup would also be traversing the US. Dates to come, stay tuned.
After At The Gates disbanded, vocalist Tomas Lindberg went on to join Swedish D-Beat band Disfear, whose recently-released Live the Storm is one of the best albums of 2008 so far.
MetalSucks' 'Sunday Spotlight' yesterday featured Converge.
What fucking kind of music are you supposed to tell people Converge play? I know the traditionalist answer is “hardcore,” [...] but that doesn’t seem to really cover all the ground; the band are confessed metalheads and the Slayer element is undeniable, although to call Converge “metalcore” somehow seems like an insult in light of all the negative connotations that go with that tag.Right you are, Axl, the metalcore tag doesn't quite fit. It's because Converge weren't a product of that trend-- they were instrumental in initiating it. Converge : metalcore :: Rage Against the Machine : nu-metal. In other words, two innovative bands that later spawned hundreds of second-rate copycats.
Head to MetalSucks.net for the feature, complete, as always, with an MP3 survey of their discography.
Slayer won a Grammy last night for a song off their album Christ Illusion, which came out in fucking 2006. Yeah, yeah, technically, the song was eligible because it first appeared on the 2007 limited-edition version of Christ Illusion, but c'mon!
In case you missed the Grammys because you had something more important to do, like go see High On Fire and Saviours or Sourvein and Zoroaster or pick your nose, Stereogum live-blogged the whole damn thing, complete with screen grabs in witty commentary (free sample: "Groban and Andrea Bocelli. Oprah is creaming her pantsuit.").
Canadian post-rock collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor, one of very few bands with misplaced hyphenation in their name that we actually dig, has
Wait no longer for another Godspeed record, as it was announced on February 08th that the Montreal post-rockers have split. Citing various reasons, including inter-band tension and the Iraq War, Efrim Menuck reveals in an upcoming interview on Drowned In Sound, that "on a personal level, I now find [Godspeed You! Black Emperor] to be inappropriate."
UPDATE 12:55 pm:
Pitchfork has confirmed that GY!BE is technically still on hiatus, not completely broken up. Drowned in Sound is not sorry for the confusion.
Godspeed You Black Emperor - "The Dead Flag Blues":
In Flames will be releasing their 9th studio album on April Fool's Day. The album is called A Sense of Purpose and its cover art (below) is an early candidate for worst of the year.

Yikes.
That's all for now, happy Monday!
