Riot Fest and Apocalyptic Crust Fest aren't until next weekend, but there's plenty of shows to tide metalheads of the land of Kuma's until then.
Nachtmystium will be wrapping up their tour at Reggie's on Saturday. While my not-so-positive feelings on the band have already been mentioned, there are some killer opening acts you'd be daft to miss. I've already waxed Southern poetic on Zoroaster and Dark Castle when they filled the Empty Bottle with 200-proof doom, and local quintet The Atlas Moth contribute even more psychedelic madness. If that's not kvlt enough for you, Idaho experimental duo Wolvserpent and local "I-don't-know-what's-going-on-but-it's-AWESOME" bringers Locrian will hunker down at Enemy Sunday night. So much doom, so little time. In a near-perfect world, that would be our only dilemma.
Don't think we're letting you off when the work week comes. Chicago gets a taste of Washington when Thrones and Christian Mistress play the Empty Bottle Monday evening. It's the best combination of Vice Dos and Don'ts and Angel Witch possible. Best of all, it's free. And when we say it's free, IT'S FREE!
Amidst all this awesomeness, we've saved the best news for last. Tuesday brings Swans at the Bottom Lounge. Yes, Swans, as in Michael Gira Swans. If this show isn't sold out, we've failed as a race.
*UPDATE* According to The Atlas Moth's Facebook page and the Reggie's Rock Club site, Zoroaster will not be performing on Saturday. Kommandant have been added as an opener.

CRUSTCAKE IS ON THE TWITTER AND THE FACEBOOK

Greetings, devotees of the 'cake. We've got a crucial PSA regarding our non-blogging activities.
Admist Sean's fervent bidding on eBay for Converge vinyls that don't exist yet, Van's diligent ear for the police scanner, Andy's beef genocides at Kuma's, and whatever our new writers do once we're done hazing them, we haven't been giving the love our Facebook and Twitter pages needed. If they were our kids, we would suck at being parents.
Well, no more. We're stepping up our presence on both social networks. Not only will you be informed of when new posts come up, you'll also get a look into what we're listening to and what's making us sound off. If Andy changes his mind on Coalesce again, you'll be in the know. We're the same bros over there as we are here.
Follow us on Twitter. Like us on Facebook.
Cause we're in this together now.

When I first started writing for Crustcake, I was living in Boulder, Colo. The city is mostly enclosed by mountains that suggest divine craft but are a testament to the awe nature can inspire. You can breathe the air here. Hiking paths and bike routes are seldom empty during the daytime. Colorado is the only state where less than a third of adults are obese, and Boulder's fitness culture accounts for some of that. 4/20 is a defacto holiday -- plenty of students at the University of Colorado gather under tarps and salute the green. Boulder even has a THC ministry -- a dispensary where you can acquire marijuana for "spiritual purposes." If you heard about the Fourmile Canyon fires, which happened Northwest of Boulder, you wouldn't be alone in suspecting the blaze came about from a dropped joint.
Boulder caters to affluent people who want to "care." People get a small thrill from buying "green" products, and "sustainable" is sexy. Buying good is seen as doing good. There are shopping centers where some parking spaces are designated for hybrids. In fact, if you're not driving a hybrid, Obama '08 stickers intact, you're driving a Subaru Outback, Obama '08 stickers intact. "Local" is a buzzword and don't you dare think about walking into that Burger King or Target. Citizens here never run out of excuses to bitch. "We're still in Afghanistan!" "My daughter's yoga instructor is late!" "That restaurant is using styrofoam cups!"
Boulder is idyllic. Too idyllic, maybe. It is not a metal city. Metal was born in an industrial town. The city with the third-highest murder rate in the country is home to one of the biggest metal festivals in America. Metal does not come from easy living. So it's odd, then, that Velnias relocated to Boulder from the western suburbs of Chicago. Perhaps they wanted to get closer to nature -- the black metal quintet's sound does lean towards the Cascadian spectrum, and Illinois is not known for its landscapes. Maybe the organic-chai-drinking poseur Buddhists that make up Boulder will provide some rage the group needs.
Below is a recent performance from Velnias in NYC, supporting Altar of Plagues. The only lighting onstage are candles, save for the occasional flash of cameras. Velnias gaze at their amps more than their audience. It's as dark as black metal should be.
Velnias will play Denver tomorrow evening at The Further Shop (921 21st Street) with Wolvserpent (formerly known as Pussygutt) and The Flight Of Sleipnir.

PLANNING FOR BURIAL DUDE STARTS MUSIC RUINS LIVES LABEL

Last November, we turned you onto New Jersey's Planning For Burial, a project with a highly esoteric take on post-rock influenced metal. We described the group as "post-life" music, given the band's focus on the other plane of life. They're heavy and doomy, though not in the conventional sense of those terms.
Well Thom, the man behind Planning for Burial, has started a label entitled Music Ruins Lives. Music may have ruined our wallets, but our lives? An except from their "About" section:
We don't do drugs here at Music Ruins Lives, but we exist as junkies nonetheless -- trapped in the never-ending chase to feed an addiction that's worse than anything based in substance, because hell, it's everywhere, everybody does it, and it's so socially acceptable the kids're getting hooked before they can even read. No one ever expects going in to have to push off payments and skip a few meals here and there in order to free up enough cash to sate the urges, but that's the reality of the situation we've put ourselves in, one that deserves no more or less pity than is cast upon those shaking with the sickness of withdrawal -- what we pop in aren't pills, but cassettes and compact discs; our needles hit record grooves instead of veins. It's disgusting.Describes our music consumption habits to a tee.
The label's first release is a cassette edition of shoegaze/doom/black/electronic/WTF group Have a Nice Life's Voids. The MC edition will include the bonus track "I'm Dr. House." According to the label, it's been a fast seller, and it may be sold out by the time you read this, but never say never. Music Ruins Lives' next project is a split CD of Planning For Burial and Lonesummer, and preorders for that ditty should be up in mid-October.
In the meantime, get yourself reacquainted with Planning for Burial's Leaving.

WORM OUROBOROS LIVE FOOTAGE POSTED ONLINE
Worm Ouroboros - "Winter" - 9/23/10 San Francisco, CA @ Knockout
Footage of chamber-folk-doom trio Worm Ouroboros' first show with Ludicra/Agalloch drummer Aesop Dekker has been posted online (above). Their self-titled Profound Lore debut is at once aching and haunted, delicate and crushing. Though it may not carry many of the hallmarks of the types of bands that dominate this site, Worm Ouroboros is a dark, dreamy masterpiece in its own right. As an aside, Dekker is having a banner year of his own, appearing on Ludicra's Album-of-the-Year contender, The Tenant, and Agalloch's absurdly anticipated Marrow of the Spirit.

LOCRIAN REVEAL RELEASE DATE AND ARTWORK FOR THE CRYSTAL WORLD

Not to let Agalloch hog everyone's attention this Thanksgiving season, Chicago experimental noise/metal duo Locrian are set to release their third studio album, The Crystal World on November 27 via Utech Records. It will be a double CD too - one composed of six tracks, the other a longer piece called "Extinction." Steven Hess of On, Pan American, and Ural Umbo will join the duo on electronics and percussion.
Terence Hannum and André Foisy's latest album is inspired by the J.G. Ballard's novel of the same name about a doctor discovering an African jungle crystalizes everything it that comes into contact with it. If you're at all familiar with Locrian's works, they all have a common thread of dark ambient, but use different methods to attain such darkness. Whereas one composition has the duo going grim and frostbitten, they may decide to go glitchier on the next work. Whatever the path, all of their works are simply excellent. If you know what exactly to expect on the next album, you know a hell of a lot more than we do!
UTech will also release a vinyl version of the album next year. And according to a recent post from Bloodlust, the CD version of Territories, which came out earlier this year, is at the pressing plant and should be coming soon. Territories features guest appearances from Bloodyminded's Mark Solotroff, Nachtmystium's Blake Judd, and Yakuza's Bruce Lamont.

TRAP THEM FINISH RECORDING, PREPARE FOR SHIT HAPPENS
Just this past Thursday, Trap Them announced via their website that they finished recording and mixing their currently unnamed new LP at Godcity with Kurt Ballou (Converge). As reported previously on the Cake, this will be Trap Them's Prosthetic Records debut and first record with former Coliseum drummer Chris Maggio. The above video of Maggio in the studio is raging, which should come as no surprise to anyone who ever saw him play with Coliseum. The guy is a beast!
Trap Them will be hitting the road on the SHIT HAPPENS tour starting Nov. 1 with sludgey Northeasterners Howl supporting probably the only band willing to admit their admiration for the absolutely horrible Buffalo Bills, Every Time I Die. See if you will be able to hear a few new Trap Them songs live in your home town after the jump.

Oakland's Tankcrimes Records is like the younger, snottier brother of the more stately and distinguished Profound Lore or 20 Buck Spin, but its catalog is no less robust, releasing albums from 'cake favs Municpal Waste and Toxic Holocaust. ARSIS FORCE YOU TO ROCK ON TOUR

Well, it's a free country, so they're not EXACTLY forcing you to rock. You can choose to stay home and watch episodes of Pawn Stars and Hoarders on Netflix Instant. But you'd be dumb not to catch Arsis live. The revitalized melodic death unit, led by James Malone and recently rejoined by fan favorite bassist Noah Martin, will be heading out on the road this December. That time of year tends to be slim pickins for shows, so you have no excuse not to air-shred. And since we interviewed them earlier this year, you know Arsis are approved by us.
Support will come from Powerglove and Conducting from the Grave.

CRUSTCAKE PICKS: CHICAGO SHOWS 9/24-9/29

by Andrew Wilhelm (CHI)
So some dude tried to bomb one of the Dave Matthews concerts last weekend. What a goof! While this week's show picks are slim, they are both like walking into tar. And if some dude tried to bomb these shows, we wouldn't call the cops. We'd lay that motherfucker out before someone hits "9" on their phone.
Anyway, our first recommendation is Bongripper's in-store at the Wicker Park Reckless Records on Saturday. It'll serve as the record release show for their latest album, Satan Worshipping Doom. The title pretty much says it all - it emits frequencies even molemen can feel, it's creeps and crawls, and it is an orgy for the Horned One. I had plenty positive to say about them when they played the second night of the Eyehategod weekend - don't miss out. Wicker Park, get ready for another cultural shock!
The big show coming up, though, is the Buzzov*en reunion over at Reggie's Rock Club on Wednesday. Kirk, Dixie, and Ramzi are coming for your whiskey and your women again. Next to Eyehategod, these dudes are the definitive word in Southern sludge. Like a pulled pork sandwich sprinkled with pills and good intentions, this shit is gonna get messy. Crustcake favs Indian will also be playing, which further proves that this is going to be hell on your ears. And possibly your brain. Never stop the madness!
Like I mentioned, there's not a whole lot going on for the rest of September. October will be a different story.

AGALLOCH'S MARROW OF THE SPIRIT COMING IN NOVEMBER

End-of-year lists, start your engines! When we last reported on Agalloch's new record, it didn't have a name or a release date. That didn't succeed in curbing our anticipation for the Portland outfit's newest missive. We're glad to say that Agalloch do have a title -- Marrow of the Spirit -- and a release date: Nov. 23, just in time for Turkey Day. Our excitement is now boiling over. If you don't plan on watching football (Texas Fight!), Profound Lore has your holiday covered.
Spirit will be the first Agalloch album with Ludicra's Aesop Dekker on drums, and will also feature appearances from Nathan Carson (Sunn O))), Witch Mountain, Two-Ton Boa), cellist Jackie Perez Gratz (Giant Squid, Asunder, Amber Asylum, Grayceon), and Jeffrey Neblock (Vindensang). With all this in mind, the question is not whether it will rule, but by how much.
Agalloch have also announced dates for a West Coast trek. Supporting them will be Allerseelen, a neo-folk/industiral act from Austria. Lucky bastards. That, and a tracklisting for Spirit, available below.
1. They Escaped The Weight Of Darkness [3:41]
Agalloch/Allerseelen West Coast Tour
2. Into The Painted Grey [12:25]
3. The Watcher’s Monolith [11:46]

CRUSTCAKE PICKS: NYC SHOWS 9/22 - 9/30

Today marks the official end of summer and despite the sunny weather, we all know what's coming. September started of with a bang (Sleep, Boris, The Body, etc.) and October looks equally huge, but here are a few shows to tide you over:
This Thursday, hardcore/grind (or as they call it, "Outlaw Punk") supergroup Venomous Concept tears up Europa with Nails, Strong Intention and Villains. If you're out of the loop, Venomous Concept includes members of grind legends Napalm Death and Brutal Truth, pretending it's 1982 again. Make sure you get there in time for Nails, though, those guys are monstrous (as Andy already mentioned).
Tuesday, the 28th, local black metal heroes Black Anvil will celebrate the release of their latest LP, Triumverate, at Webster Hall, backed by The Absence and Ipissimus. You can get into the show for free by getting the new album at Best Buy.
Black Anvil label-mates Unearthly Trance also have a record dropping on the 28th and will back that with a show at Union Pool on the 29th, with the epic doom band SUMA and Pharaoh in tow.
Finally, close out the month with the eclectic post-hardcore/punk/whatever barrage of Envy, Trash Talk, Touche Amore and And So I Watch You From Afar at Santos Party House on the 30th.
So enjoy what's left of (camo?) shorts weather, start polishing your combat boots and get some rest between the shows -- October is looking epic. Full list of September shows below.
*EDIT* Holy shit, I forgot about the biggest show of all. Sludge lords Buzzov*en are playing on the 30th! The show has relocated to Public Assembly, the price has been reduced to $15 AND in addition to Black Tusk, Ramming Speed and Javelina are now on the bill. Definitely my pick for the ugliest, filthiest, most disgusting show of the month.
Crustcake Picks - New York Shows 9/23 - 9/30:9/23 – Iced Earth / Sons of Liberty @ Best Buy Theater
9/23 - Venomous Concept / Nails / Strong Intention / Villains @ Europa
9/24 – Maegashira / The Crimson Electric / Mighty High Cortez @ Charleston
9/25 – Burning Love / Nomos / Hellfang / Sick Fuck @ Acheron
9/26 – Obliteration / Brain Killer / Mob Mentality @ Cake Shop

CRUSTY CLIP OF THE WEEK: KILLING JOKE - 'WARDANCE'

Every single Wednesday without fail, your hosts post a suitably stale video clip that we think needs to be revisited. Click here for more Crusty Clips. Got a clip you think we should post? Send it to crustcake@gmail.com.
by Andrew Wilhelm (CHI)
If you don't agree with me that Killing Joke's "Wardance" is one of the greatest songs ever made, leave the hall. Pronto. There's a whole lotta rhythm going down, but it's not a rhythm of love and unity. The metal-on-metal-on-metal guitar, steady-yet-dreadful drum beat, the mess of noise in the background, and vocalist Jaz Coleman's grating snarl make this a song for bombing your enemies. As Coleman says himself in the song, "Music for pleasure/It's not music no more." With a bleak message delivered in a catchy presentation, it's the post-punk "Born in the U.S.A." Only total submission is real.
Killing Joke also have a new record coming out on Spinefarm Records due Nov. 16 entitled Absolute Dissent. No, it does not feature that guy from the Foo Fighters, but it does feature Killing Joke's original line up of Coleman, guitarist Kevin "Geordie" Walker, bassist Martin "Youth" Glover, and drummer Paul Ferguson. Dissent will be released on CD and two-colored vinyl, and some editions will come with a second disc called Absolute Respect, featuring covers from Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Fear Factory, Helmet, and many more.

WITHERED DEBUT TRACK OFF NEW ALBUM, DUALITAS (HINT: IT'S AWESOME)

Speaking of Withered, the Atlanta foursome are hitching up their crusty, blackend britches in preparation for the Oct. 26 release of Dualitas, their third full-length and first for Prosthetic Records (Skeletonwitch, Landmine Marathon). In a further twist of weird fate, Withered is giving "Extinguished With the Weary," the lead track fom Dualitas, away for free in partnership with Scion A/V and Adult Swim. It's available here. As has been said before, there must be somebody over there at Scion (and Adult Swim, for that matter) with carte blanche and good taste, 'cause the caliber of metal they've been putting their name next to is top notch.
Make the jump for Dualitas info, including track listing, album art and BBQ/listening party details.

Dualitas will be released on both CD (above left) and vinyl (above right), the latter of which will be a 500-piece, limited-edition gatefold double LP set on 150-gram wax, which contains the exclusive, 33-minute instrumental track, "Dwell." Pre-orders available here. Dualitas marks the third time Withered has collaborated with artist Paul Romano (Mastodon, Hate Eternal). In addition, the band will also be hosting a free listening party/BBQ for the album at the Masquerade in Atlanta on Sunday, Sept. 26.

FENRIZ CURATING 'LIVE EVIL' UK FESTIVAL

"Something CAN actually come out of pure uncorrupt underground idealism if one does it long enough." -- Fenriz
I think it's time we all just go ahead and declare Gylve "Fenriz" Nagell the raddest dude in metal, full stop. From his taste-defining Band of the Week blog and authoritative mixtapes as DJ Vast Knowledge of Music to his dedication to all things outdoors (Hiking Metal Punks Forever!), Darkthrone's more outspoken member has cemented himself as a veritable cultural icon and champion of the true underground.
It's in the spirit of the latter label that Fenriz and Terrorizer Magazine are teaming together to present Live Evil. Though the two-day festival is taking place across the pond, it's still worth noting that even in the age of bloated, energy drink-sponsored, corporate shitfests, a healthy spirit of DIY-infused no-bullshit brutality survives. Legendary death dealers Angel Witch and Vulcano are headlining an international slew of disgustingly-cool bands, hand-picked by Mr. Hank Amarillo, himself, including 'cake favs Hooded Menace and Salute.
Full line-up, event details and poster (with art by French) after the jump.

PAY WHAT YOU WANT FOR THE NEW LIKE RATS 7"

Sound familiar?
Forget about those Brits, though. We'd rather be listening to Chicago's Like Rats anyway, who feature Weekend Nachos guitarist Andy Nelson on bass and Primitive Future impresario/sometimes Weekend Nachos merch slanger/Tom G. Warrior superfan Todd Nief on guitar. If you're a bonehead that hasn't heard them before, they pretty much sound like Discharge and Celtic Frost duking it out on the South Side. Which is to say, awesome. They recently put out a self-titled 7" through Cosmic Debris (don't you eat that yellow snow!) Records, available in physical and digital formats on Like Rats' webpage. A hard copy will set you back about six bucks, but if you'd prefer to go strictly digital, you have the option to pay as much or as little as you like. The physical versions also include a digital download code. Be a bro and cop this little ditty. You won't regret it. Besides, your 7" collection can never be too large.
And before we go, check out that cover, shown above. It's a forest, but with suns for eyes. They're looking straight at you, dude. Straight. At. YOU. Trippy.

GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR RISE ONCE AGAIN

Yes, it's true.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor are doing shows again.
While the Canadian post-rock ensemble never officially "broke up," they were inactive for a large part of last decade, staring in 2003. Now they'll be heading to Europe in December and January, followed by North American dates in February and March. They'll also be curating All Tomorrow Parties' Nightmare Before Christmas festival December 3-5, which will also feature a wide range of performers such as Neurosis, "Weird" Al Yankovic, Throbbing Gristle, Nomeansno and many more. You'd think that the group would have done some more shows sooner, given that bands like Mono, Explosions in the Sky, and in the metal realm, Isis, all found underground success tinkering with GY!BE's sound in their (considerable) absence.
But like the long song structures and breathtaking crescendos that have come to define GY!BE's music, perhaps the wait will be worth it.

HEAR THE NEW TORCHE RECORD. NOW!

Torche's Songs for Singles is easily one of our most anticipated records this year. It comes out next Tuesday on CD, LP, and digital formats, but if you can't wait until then, you impatient imbecile, the new record is available for streaming on their Myspace now. Seems as though Myspace is still good for something after all. Jokes aside, even if the band didn't intend for Singles to be an EP, it makes the most of its short running time. Most of the songs are pure Torche -- if you know it, you love it. "Face the Wall" will throw you for a loop, as it's kind of a downer, but it's still a great song and fits with the rest of the record. Enough of us, go listen!
And if you forgot that Torche is about to pillage the land with Kylesa and High on Fire, you better scramble and prepare! Despite Torche's cheery onstage demeanor, they don't play around. Dates after the jump.

EARTH TO RELEASE DEMO RECORDINGS COMPENDIUM CD

Stream: Earth - "Divine and Bright" [MP3]
Earth's Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method is a masterpiece of barren doom and windswept dread. It's the soundtrack to an all-night marathon of El Topo, The Road and maybe A Fistful of Dollars. It's one of my favorite records of all time and alone cements Earth mastermind Dylan Carlson's status level at genius.
But before that 2005 watershed -- waaaay before, in fact -- Carlson and his pals holed up in Smegma Studios to record their primitive, amplifier-worshipping demo recordings. The output from these sessions have been released here and there on various EPs and B-sides, but for the first time, they will be available on one concise platter. A Beaurocratic Desire for Extra Capsular Extractions will be issued in CD form on Southern Lord and features such luminaries as Slim Moon (Kill Rock Stars), Joe Preston (Thrones, Melvins) and that one guy who borrowed Carlson's shotgun and never returned it.
Track listing and a peek at the Simon Fowler/Stephen O'Malley art/design collab after the jump.
A Beaurocratic Desire for Extra Capsular Extractions Track Listing:1. "A Bureaucratic Desire for Revenge, part 1" 7:22
2. "A Bureaucratic Desire for Revenge, part 2" 6:38

CRUSTCAKE PICKS: CHICAGO SHOWS 9/16-9/22

by Andrew Wilhelm (CHI)
I know it's been a while since I gave y'all the low-down on the best Chicago shows coming soon...but with a week this stacked, I couldn't wait any longer. Of course, this may not apply if you have the money to go see Alice in Chains and/or Roger Water's four-night stand at the United Center. Fret not, there's cheaper options that are just as hell-raising!
First up on Friday is Despised Icon, Misery Index, and Revocation over at the Bottom Lounge, one of the many places in the Windy City where Shiner is treated like an import. Despised Icon I don't care much for, but Misery Index and Revocation have our utmost approval. Grind and air guitar the night away! If that crowd is too young for you, you'll feel right at home at the Raven show at Abbey Pub the next night. The Gallagher brothers and former Pentagram drummer Joe Hasselvander will be laying down classic slabs of NWOBHM, or "athletic rock" as the band terms it. Opening acts Earthen Grave and Bible of the Devil should take note that Metallica once opened for Raven, and look where they are now! Also, you can go and judge for yourself if "Seek and Destory" uses "the most ripped off riff in heavy metal."
Sunday brings Venomous Concept to the Double Door, featuring a bevy of metal veterans - Shane Embury and Danny Herrera of Napalm Death, as well as Dan Lilker and Kevin Sharp of Brutal Truth. If that isn't enough for you, they have up-and-coming mental butchers NAILS opening for them. If I had to pick only one show to go to, that would be it. Too fast? Weedeater will cure your whiplash at Reggie's the following night, and possibly get you blazed in the process. It'll serve as a good warm-up for Buzzov*en's return to Chicago later in the month.
Go out and celebrate Mayor Daley's impending retirement the right way, 'cakers! If I forgot anything, let me know in the comments!
*EDIT* Holy moley, how could I have forgotten that Like Rats are doing a record release show Saturday at the Underground Lounge. Check out the interview I did with Todd earlier in the year. They're rad dudes, and I don't let rad dudes have their shows go un-promoted.

Eternal road dogs Skeletonwitch are wrapping up slaying Thee Olde Country on their "European Bangover" tour and are prepping their winter "North American Skullsplitter"* tour. CRUSTY CLIP OF THE WEEK: NAKED CITY - 'OSAKA BONDAGE'

Every single Wednesday without fail, your hosts post a suitably stale video clip that we think needs to be revisited. Click here for more Crusty Clips. Got a clip you think we should post? Send it to crustcake@gmail.com.
by Andrew Wilhelm (CHI)
Some of you crusty bros were lucky enough to catch a reunited Sleep. Slow, gooey, smokey Sleep. Al Cisneros laying down fat grooves and existing in a nirvana only he feels, a shirtless Matt Pike showing off his tasty body and tastier licks, and that new guy on drums doing what he does. By the many accounts I've heard, in person and on the internets, it was a groovy good time, full of friendship, Iommi worship, and more hash business than a Boulder, CO dispensary.
Guess what? Naked City were none of the above. Fast, abrasive, razor-sharp, and all over the place Naked City. You don't hang out or relax to this band, you make somebody your bitch. John Zorn and his band of sadists blew through songs and genres in a maelstrom that bands like Iwrestledabearonce fool themselves by imitating. In fact, John Zorn has made a career out of making you go "Is this music?" and Naked City is arguably his apex. If you thought Gaspar Noe's Irreversible was a romantic comedy, this is your favorite band.
After checking out the clip for "Osaka Bondage" below, you can revisit my blabbering on about Naked City in the first Crustcast.

SALOME POST NEW SONG, TO RAGE WITH BATILLUS

Katherine Katz is no stranger to praise on the 'Cake. She sang on Agoraphobic Nosebleed's "Agorapocalypse," which made the end-of-2009 lists for Van Damned and the WZAd. A year later, Katz is looking like a strong contender for the end-of-year lists again. But Agoraphobic don't have a new album coming out. How can this be?
She's back to focusing on her doom trio Salome, who recently completed work on their new record, Terminal. The record is set to be released on November 9th by the metal Criteron Collection, a.k.a. Profound Lore. According to the label, the new album will clock in around 70 minutes of evocative doom. If "Master Failure," which you can listen to here, is any indication, this is not going to be a heavy one. It's gonna be a REALLY HEAVY one. And coming off the excellent split Salome did with Thou, Our Enemy Civilization, this is no light-hearted decree. Could Terminal be a top ten contender? We'll know in November.
Even more news for our Baltimore readers: Salome will be doing a show with Batillus, featuring our longtime homeboy Gerf on the skins, on September 21st at Hexagon. Don't skip out - that school project, graveyard shift at 7-11, or whatever commitments you've made can wait. Doom is dominant.
We've also got the tracklisting for Terminal, and show flyer available after the jump.
Tracklist for Terminal

2) Terminal
3) Master Failure
4) Epidemic
5) An Accident Of History

THE ENDLESS BLOCKADE, THE FINAL BLOCKADE
The Endless Blockade are done. Footage of their last show (which was with Bastard Noise) can be seen above, taken July 3rd at the Rita in Toronto. The Endless Blockade were one of my favorite bands. After reading about them in the 'Upfront Profile' of Decibel Magazine issue #45 I went home and googled their myspace page. That particular page stayed open and on repeat for the better part of week, before I could track down some of their records. There hasn't been a band who have made that much of an immediate impression on me since. The Endless Blockade also put on one of the best shows I saw last year.
Audio interviews with Andrew Nolan (Bass, Vocals) can be found here and here. His blog is worth your time, and so is his new band.

NEW UNEARTHLY TRANCE SONGS

A few new Unearthly Trance songs have made their way onto the band's myspace. "The Horsemen Arrive In The Night," "Solar Eye," and "Into A Chasm" all stem from Unearthly Trance's upcoming release V. This is record is excellent, so good in fact that I managed to sit through the entire - god awful - beeped Relapse digital promo. These songs give a great preview of the record, lengths and tempos vary between songs but the point is clear. Unearthly Trance are ready to stomp their doom all over you.
Between this record and The Howling Wind's Into The Cryoshpere, Ryan Lipynsky could end up on a lot of year end lists, twice.
V is available for pre-order here and will see it's release September 28th from Relapse Records.

CHRISTIAN MISTRESS STREAM NEW RECORD

Summer isn't coming back for a while. The leaves turn bronze and red, the beaches become deserted, and you can feel winter's soft touch before the choke hold. As the Judas Priest track "Last Rose of Summer" goes:
Do not despair, mother nature simply rests/In sleep she has well earned/Till one day not so very far from now/With the opening of the first rose buds, I shall return.Till then, we have Christian Mistress. 20 Buck Spin's latest signees, straight outta Olympia, Washington, are Angel Witch reincarnated. Def Leppard if they continued On Through the Night and didn't get the peaches or the cream. Raven in their playing corn fields with Metallica days.
You get the picture. These dudes (and dudette) love their NWOBHM. Not convinced they're the real deal? Decibel is streaming their new record, Agony and Opium, in its entirety. You have no excuse not to check it out.
Christian Mistress will also be heading out with fellow Washington state bruiser Joe Preston, playing as Thrones. Dates below.

HAPPY HOLIDAZE: LABOR DAY
Got the day off? Happy Labor Day!
Still have to work, ya poor bastard? Happy Labor Day anyway!
Going through a period of funemployment? Well, today is just like any other day.
Crack open a High Life, Anchor Steam, or whatever brew gets you going, and jam out to Fenriz and Nocturno Culto's ode to those in the struggle, "I Am the Working Class." Their dirty fusion of crust and NWOBHM makes for a fitting end to the summer season. Wear your big sunglasses, not your Emperor sunglasses, outside. Cheers!

NEW TRAP THEM SOON, NEW WEBSITE NOW

On Monday, Trap Them return to Godcity Studios (Kurt Ballou) to record their third LP. During the process, Trap Them have set up a new blog which will be regularly updated with pictures, videos and studio entries.
This will be Trap Them's first full-length for Prosthetic Records, and the first to feature drummer Chris Magio (formerly of Coliseum). If their last EP, Filth Rations, was any indicator, we are in for more power. Vocalist Ryan McKenny commented, "There was a certain potential the members of this band felt had not yet been met. On this record, that potential has been fully realized. Get heavy, motherfuckers."
