The new Kreator video, so stupid, so awesome?

by theseseans (NYC)

This is by far the most ridiculous video I have ever seen. Well, at least since that equally ridiculous Lair of the Minotaur video. It's so fucking ridiculous I feel the need to actually tell you about it despite the fact that you can watch it just as easily.

Kreator begins playing in a desolate land, enter large, mostly naked man (seriously, did anyone, ever, ever just walk around looking like this?). Enter second man, fist fight ensues, 1st man losing, finds sword, cuts down 2nd man. Band continue to play. Man likes sword, takes sword to "king" who is conveniently right around the corner. Kills king, cronies, takes woman. Army attacks man. Band continues to play. Man (who has managed to "upgrade" his sword by the way) kills entire army. Look closely for the shot where he actually cuts some dudes arm off. I won't ruin the end for you, you'll just have to watch.

So...was that awesome? I really don't know. Kreator are a very competent thrash band, and the song really ain't bad, but man, that video. Wow.

Tour: Napalm Death, Toxic Holocaust, Trap Them

Napalm Death have one hell of a tour together in support of their latest, Time Waits For No Slave. Bringing Toxic Holocaust and Trap Them out in support makes a bill that is an absolute must see. While Toxic Holocaust can be a little silly here and there (just don't read the lyrics) there is something pretty undeniable about their stripped down, punk focused, retro thrash sound. Trap Them live, well, we think Cosmo Lee put it best when he told us "I've never seen them be anything less than incredible." Yeah.

Crusty Clip of the Week: Testament - More Than Meets The Eye

Crusty Clip of the Week

Every Wednesday, your hosts post a suitably stale video clip that we think needs to be revisited. Click here for more Crusty Clips. Got a clip you think we should post? Send it to crustcake@gmail.com.

by theseseans (NYC)

Okay, I know. This video isn't very old, also, it's Thursday not Wednesday. Allow me to explain. 1st of all, I got a new job yesterday (fuck yeah!) and just didn't have time to do this. 2nd, while this video is pretty new, Testament are definitely crusty so fuck it. Plus this song is totally rad, when The Formation of Damnation came out last year and got lots of hype I didn't bite, but when I saw this video I went out and picked it up. It's not mind blowing, but it's fucking solid, and a great example of a thrash band that has managed to age and still put out really good material.....you know, unlike some other "important" bands out there.

Landmine Marathon sign to Prostethic Records

Landmine Marathon recently signed with Prosthetic Records. Guitarist Ryan Butler commented:

We're extremely excited about signing with Prosthetic and can't wait to forge new friendships and relationships with them...they've been nothing but a blast to work with through the signing process, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for this partnership.
Landmine Marathon released the awesome Rusted Eyes Awake last year on Level Plane, the band's sound is often compared to Bolt Thrower and Napalm Death. The Phoenix New Times recently did lengthy piece on the band which you can find here, it's always nice to see mainstream media picking up on the extreme!!

Doomriders hit the studio, good times sure to ensue for all

Doomriders

Please don't try to tell us that you don't have a good time whenever listening to Doomriders. No one wants to call you a liar. In fact just last weekend Gerf had a party and while most of the "non metal" guests there looked questioningly at the five dudes headbanging in the corner while attempting conversation over blarrrrrring High On Fire, they couldn't help but to nod with a subconscious Fuck Yeah! when Doomriders came on.

So it seems natural to report that the Doomriders have entered the studio with Kurt Ballou and that everyone involved is no doubt having a great fucking time. The record follows their recent 7" Split with Disfear, it should be released this year from Deathwish.

Fuck yeah!

Crustcake Interviews: Tombs

Tombs

by theseseans (NYC)

Today Tombs release their Relapse Records debut, Winter Hours. Last month we sat down with the band to discuss the new record, new members, art, music, Lil' Wayne, and of course, the apocalypse. You can order Winter Hours on CD or vinyl right here.

theseseans: Could you start us off with a brief history of the band?

Mike: Well, we started playing together as a band a couple years ago, and we have had a couple line up changes. Hence, we have the current line up which is Andrew Hernandez on drums, Carson Daniel James on bass, and myself Mike Hill on guitar and vocals. Currently we have two records out, we have our self titled EP which came out on Black Box Recordings and a split with the German hardcore band Planks, which also came out on Black Box Recordings. We have done a couple tours and we just recorded our debut for Relapse and that’s pretty much it. [Technically, as of today, Tombs now have three records out]

theseseans: For the new record, you recorded at Etching Tin Studios in Richmond, VA, and you produced it yourself. Could you talk a little bit about those decisions?

Mike: Yeah, we worked with Ian Whalen as an engineer, but we handled all the production end of things. How we were going to do the layering, how we were going to track everything, we made all the final sonic decisions during the mixing. Ian did a tremendous job capturing everything. Everything else that we’ve done I’ve recorded and mixed and on my own, but this time around we wanted to concentrate more on the performances instead of worrying about hitting play and record at the same time and mic placement and all that. We just wanted to focus on playing, delivering a good performance.

theseseans: Winter Hours will be your debut for Relapse, how did that partnership come about?

Mike: I’ve had a good relationship with the guys who work there for going on twelve years. Namely Gordon Conrad, I’ve known Gordon since the mid nineties. He put out a couple records by one of my older bands, Anodyne, and since then we’ve been really good friends. Over the years a few of my other friends have moved in and out of the Relapse camp and we’ve stayed in touch throughout the years. When we had demos of new materials, they were the first people that we thought of to send it to, and they were into it. So far everything is good, once the record comes out we’ll see how the relationship develops. We feel very positive about it, everything seems really cool.

Carson: I didn’t have any relationship with anybody at Relapse (laughs) other than the fact that I grown up in south Jersey and had lived in Philadelphia for a while, so I used to go the Relapse retail store all the time with all my paychecks and blow it all there, constantly. It’s one of my favorite record labels and a lot of my favorite bands are on there. When we got approached by Relapse to sign on with them, it was pretty intense, for me anyway. Having not really been in bands my whole life, going from sort of accidentally joining a band, to that band now being on my favorite label, getting to play with my favorite bands and meet people that I really admire, and call them friends now, it’s all really cool. Relapse has been really helpful with everything that we have been doing: the music video, getting the press stuff together for us, I’m really excited to see where it goes from there.

Andrew: I also have known Gordon Conrad from the past, so I too had that connection to Relapse. When I was a lot younger he hooked me and I stayed at Relapse for the first new England metal fest, or the second one, which was really awesome, it’s given me this great relationship with them since I was a teenager. Being on Relapse, is totally amazing, just the fact that I’m part of the Relapse family. I mean they were always a part of my musical life anyway, so now this [the signing] is just phenomenal.

theseseans: The album title Winter Hours, seems really ominous, can you elaborate on the title, and also touch on the lyrical content for the record, is there an over arching theme to Winter Hours?

Mike: There is definitely a theme in the record. Obviously the lyrics came first, it’s sort of a culmination of thirteen months of writing and revisions, maybe about thirty days before we actually recorded the record I had final versions of all the lyrics. Typically when I write lyrics, it all comes from journal entries, fragments, and things that I’ve been working on over the course of the year. A lot of the themes for the record were taken from those entries, and some of the ideas that I was working with were sort of you know, feelings of the approaching Armageddon, and manifestations of feelings that come to me in my dreams. One of the things that I do is if I have a dream I write it down, and just file it away. I refer back to it for lyric writing. There were some songs that would come together just like that; other songs would be a combination of multiple writing sessions and pieces, and for some of the songs I pulled from several years worth of experiences. So with that sort of Apocalyptic, Armageddon, theme running through it, winter is the “dead season” you know? The title Winter Hours arrived from a twilight end of the world vibe. The winter hours to me feels like the final hours of existence. That is basically where the title comes from.

theseseans: You say that the lyrics come first? Do you ever base any of the songs musically around the tone or arrangement of the lyrics?

Mike: Oh, actually, no the process is very separate. In regard to the text, the title came last, the lyrics came first. The title was actually derived from the lyrics. But the process of writing always starts off the song itself. Once the songs are worked out in rehearsal I start to refer back to the notes that I’ve taken. I write every day so there is always a stream of words and phrases to draw from. That’s the point where I start to put together concepts for the lyrics and the whole thing kind of grows over time. Even when we play live I’ll have different versions of the songs that are different from the beginning, but when it comes time to sit down and record it, those versions are a lot different. They will evolve over the course of the year. The music part comes first, because once it’s written, it becomes a matter of executing it a number of times, it’s just practice and repetition until it becomes muscle memory. The lyrical portion becomes more of a cerebral exercise where you are drawing free associations together and trying to make a coherent statement.

theseseans: Does anyone else have any comments on the lyrics?

(Andrew and Carson both shake their heads)

Carson: That’s his scene. (laughter)

theseseans: The songwriting process, lets take this from another angle. Andrew you did not play on the album correct?

Andrew: No.

theseseans: And Carson, you have not been with the band since the beginning correct?

Carson: No, I joined the band right after they recorded the EP, the black box EP. The first recording that I did with Tombs was…the demo?

Mike: Yeah, the demo.

Carson: Yeah, the demo, for a week and a half long tour we did last year with Asra, which is actually Andrew’s old band. I played on the split with Planks and the Winter Hours record. I actually forgot what the original question was?

theseseans: Yeah...I actually didn't finish the question.

(Laughter)

theseseans: So I wanted to ask you guys as a group, but also as individuals about songwriting musically. Listening to Winter Hours, it is obvious that a lot of time was spent on the music, between the layers and layers of guitar, to the composition of the songs. So what is the dynamic like with the song writing?

Carson: In the beginning when I first joined the band, I wasn’t much of a bass player; I’m actually not sure why Mike even wanted to take the risk in letting me join this band (laughs). In the beginning Mike would bring all the riffs and everything, and he would never tell anybody what to do, but he definitely had ideas for everybody and then we would do our own thing with it. But it seems more recently, especially with Andrew that we have been writing more as a unit.

theseseans: Are you guys writing right now?

Carson: Oh yeah, we are always writing.

Mike: We are actually playing news songs, we have one, at the last couple shows we’ve the played, the first cut in the set has been a brand new song. Typically I still come to practice with the riffs, you know? But I think that we are collaborating more on the arrangements these days. I’ll have the basic ideas for guitar, and then when we practice we really work everything out as group, you know, should this part be fast, or does it sound better played slow, should this be the verse, do we need a bridge? Stuff like that is now much more of a group thing, everyone has input now and I feel more comfortable like that. When you get too deep into your own head trip, it defeats the purpose of the band you know? Like why even have anyone else involved? I feel a lot more comfortable with this group, having these two people here for quality control for the whole procedure.

theseseans: Andrew, how comfortable are you with your role in the band? Having not played on Winter Hours you obviously had to learn the songs, and be able to play them appropriately. But I’m sure you must also want to make those songs yours, and put your own touch to them. Can you discuss that, and also your role in the writing process?

Andrew: When I first joined the band, I had to learn nine songs in seven days.

(Laughter)

Mike: That was brutal!

(Laughter)

Andrew: At first I tried to play a striped down, rudimentary style based on what the last drummer did. And as a drummer I definitely have a lot of respect for him, and the way in which he played. But I’m not him, and I play in my own style, which has been great for the writing process. It seems like the more we get to know each other musically, the more Mike’s writing has really been bringing out my strengths. As far as learning the old parts though, that’s something that I really wanted to do, to learn those parts as best as I could. It made me feel good knowing that I was doing the songs justice, and also you know, playing someone else’s part. It’s almost like a cover song you know? But that’s what the songs needed; I mean that’s what the songs are, and when people hear them on the album they are going to expect to hear that live. I want to at the very least appropriately represent the songs, but I’ve also changed some things too, hopefully for the better.

theseseans: And you feel good about the writing process?

Andrew: Yeah, I think the writing process is good, pretty much every practice I think Mike has some sort of new material, new ideas, new riffs. We’ve talked about it, and by the time we go to record our next album, we could possibly have thirty new songs. Seriously, we could possibly have that many. Winter Hours isn’t even out yet and we have one complete new song that we are playing live. We are already working on new songs, we have four songs that aren’t done but are still there in form.

Carson: Yeah, the new song, “To Cross The Land” is the first song that we actually wrote as a band. We wrote it at the end of last year when we came back from Europe. Touching on the last question with Andrew, you’ve got to give the guy a tremendous amount of respect for being able to pull it together and learn an entire set worth of material, a week before we go to Europe to tour. He really stepped it up, the blasting is now way tighter, and that was a real concern of ours. The last drummer, Dale Nixon as we like to call him, he would be a little bit all over, but Andrew is a responsible guy.

Mike: I also just want to add that, as far as playing new material, and having a new member in the band, I would definitely like to avoid a situation where Andrew feels compelled to play a part exactly the way someone else played it. I think the beauty of having a new member in the band is that he can bring his own creativity to the table. If there’s something that doesn’t work with this current line up, we just don’t do it, we’ll play new stuff. We’re really about freedom and moving forward, not dwelling on things. Who knows? Six months from now we’ll probably have a whole new set of all new material. I don’t want to feel shackled to old material just because the new stuff isn’t available for people to listen to yet. When the record comes out, that’s cool, I hope people really enjoy the record, but that’s sort of a time capsule of a period of time. If you go see us, this weekend, or next weekend, or on tour, we are going to be who we are then. We might play new material, we might pull out really old material, whatever.

theseseans: Well I think that live, you do an excellent job representing your sound. The first time I saw you guys was at the Decibel party, and I have been a strong supporter ever since. Speaking of Decibel, Tombs received not one but two write ups in this month's issue. [Darkthrone Cover]

Andrew: Three times!

theseseans: Three? Oh no shit! Because of the write up on the party!

(Laughter)

Mike: Yeah, there is a picture of Carson.

theseseans: So that obviously rules, what is your relationship like with them?

Mike: I have a tremendous amount of respect for them. I remember when they first came out, and they were probably the extreme music zine that seemed to quote unquote "get it," you know? And they do so without limiting their scope, they really cover the whole gamut. The fact that they gave us such a high...you know, sort of, "score" on this thing, it really means a lot to us, and a lot to me personally. [Winter Hours received a rating of 9/10] I finally met Albert at the party. We have been emailing each other for years, with me running Black Box Recordings, I'm always dealing with someone over there for advertising or for PR or whatever. So we have been aware of each other for a while, but we finally got to meet each other at the decibel party. That was really cool.

Carson: It's really awesome to get a 9/10, because, well you know.

theseseans: It's awesome!

Carson: Yeah, I mean, it's just one persons opinion, but not a lot of people get a 9/10 so that's a really huge compliment.

Andrew: Yeah I think it’s really cool. Apparently they can hear my ride cymbal, so that's cool. (Laughter) I think I have been in there like three times in the last six months.

Carson: There's an issue that I have where HE is in there three times in the one issue!

Andrew: I was in once with Asra, and once with my old band Leader. We were trying to figure out if it was a bad review or not? We weren't really sure.

Carson: It was good!

Andrew: I'm not sure about that. (Laughter) But, anyway, I think that magazine is awesome, I had a friend upstate, my friend Andrew Summers, he uh, he's probably more opinionated than me and is more up and down with what he likes and what he doesn't like, he's almost like that black metal guy from the second season of Metalocalypse. You know? He's like "oh you like that demo? I don't like it anymore" (Laughter) Anyway, he turned me onto Decibel, and I was like "holy shit! This guy likes something!? A magazine?" They cover everything, I'm into it.

theseseans: Ok let's stop talking about them (laughter) let's get back to talking about you. Let's talk about support for the record, I saw that you have a tour scheduled with Dysrhythmia, what else do you have planned?

Mike: We are doing a US tour in May and that's with Bison BC, Intronaut, us, and Giant. Currently, that's the line up for the tour anyway. Then in a couple of weeks we leave for a brief east coast tour with Dysrhythmia, and right now we are waiting to hear about this Kylesa/Skeletonwitch thing in March, I'm actually not sure how long that would be, probably just nine days, down to Austin, TX and back. Then along that time we will be doing one offs, and random shows here and there. The week our record comes out we are playing two shows here in Brooklyn on the same day. Feb 21st, ABC No Rio in the day with Woe and Black Anvil and Bastard Sappling. I think that there may be another band on the bill too. The night time show we put together, and that has us, The Wayard, Engineer, and Defeatist and that is going to be a really exciting show.

Carson: Both those shows are sick.

Mike: Yeah, the coolest thing about those shows is that we are all friends, and it's not going to be one of those scenes where everyone is going to be all "well we want to play forty minutes!" and some dude takes twenty minutes to set up his gear, you know? It's all people who have all been on the road together before. Everyone knows what it's like to tour, everyone knows what it's like to do shows, and it's completely cool. Every band is going to be awesome that night, well, hopefully we are too! (Laughter) But the other bands on the bill are great. I would play two shows everyday man, I love it.

theseseans: So the plan is to take Tombs on the road and make it happen then?

(Everyone nods in agreement)

Andrew: I want to tour forever.

theseseans: I haven't listened to Defeatist yet, but over the past month or so the keep popping up on my radar.

Andrew: There is a reason.

Mike: Yeah, they are awesome; in fact, I want to throw those guys a little props here. They have several seven inches and splits out on Level Plane, and then Willow Tip collected them all and is releasing them. They are a really solid band of guys who have all been playing for a long time, and it results in a really dedicated great band.

theseseans: I'll make sure to check them out! So with the record coming out, tours scheduled, what are your goals for the band? What do you want in Tombs future?

Mike: I have absolutely no expectations man. My only goal is to keep delivering it every single time. I don’t expect anything, I don't expect anyone to like the record, I don't expect anyone to like us live, I just want to go out and play as hard as I can every night. That's really what it comes down to, not to expect anything and to just go out and fucking destroy.

Carson: Yeah, I think it's a matter of leaving expectations behind. It's an added bonus when people are into it, I mean, that's obviously really cool. But if they aren't then whatever, we just want to keep things moving forward, living up to our own expectations, as a band and personally. Just trying to do our best, keep ripping it, and keep trying to do better than the day before.

Andrew: I'm just gracious to be here in my life cycle. But, I would like to play for Alan Moore sometime, THAT would be awesome.

(Laughter)

Mike: Alan Moore? Good one!

Andrew: Yeah man, with his beard, lurking somewhere in the shadows at a show.

(Laughter)

theseseans: That would be awesome for sure. I think that the record, start to finish, works really well as a full, finished piece. The artwork seems to really compliment that, and I was curious if you guys had any hand in the art direction, or if the artist heard the record before doing the art?

Carson: If you all you saw was the cover, then there is a lot more going on. The art for the record was done as individual panels, painted, quite large, panels. Conceptually, I think, it was Mike's idea for the dying sun incorporated with the lady in the lake image. The image on the front was painted from a photograph that Mike took in upstate New York. I have known Thomas [Hooper] for, oh god, five years now? I went to school in England and we became good friends through music, and he's a tattoo artist, so he used to tattoo me a lot over there. He just seemed like an obvious person to work with us, he seems plugged into the same stuff that we are plugged into, aesthetically, emotionally, what we were doing with the music. He had the record, and Mike and I had gone to talk to him on numerous occasions to talk about where we wanted the art to go. It was much more about a mood, rather than graphic images that are supposed to represent each song. It was kind of an overall feeling that we were going for, and that is evident in his design. I think it's great. In fact, I think we are going to do a show in March at an art gallery where he wants to show all the panels. He also, happens to be in a side project with Mike.

Mike: The whole process for making the artwork, it was really collaborative, it wasn't like we had a whole schematic of what we wanted to do or anything. All I did was give him a photograph and I highlighted certain passages out of the song lyrics. Thomas printed those out really big and put them in his studio and just tacked up the photo and just went for it.

Carson: It was really organic.

Mike: Yeah, it was just everyone reacting to different ideas and working together. I couldn't be more happy with it, I think it looks great. It's cool that we got to work with Thomas and it wasn't just some designer we hired, or worse some designer that the label hired who just did whatever. It's much more like Tom became a fourth member of the band with his visual contribution.

Carson: It was also a matter of not wanting it to look like anything else on Relapse, and I don't think it does and I don't think that we sound like anything else on Relapse.

Mike: I don't think it looks like anything else.

(laughs)

Mike: No, no, I don''t want to be on some Robert Plant bullshit, but to me it looks very unique especially in the realm of music that we operate in. It has a different quality. With a lot of records, people all start to latch onto similar trips, you know what I mean? There are a couple of luminaries, Aaron Turner, Seldon Hunt, you know those guys, John Baizley, those guys are excellent at what they do; but then there are also a lot of other people who just settle into that same vibration. Thomas, I think, has his own, different resonance that he is on, and I think it's cool that we are working together on that level.

Carson: If you look at a lot of the bigger underground metal labels, they are run by designers. Hyrdahead and Aaron Turner, there is almost an aesthetic where you can look at a record and know what label it's on. Deathwish with Jacob Bannon, Southern Lord with O'Malley and Anderson, you can sometimes figure out what a record sounds like just the album art. I think that's great in a lot of ways, but it was definitely a conscious decision of ours to step away from that. Thomas had never done album art before, he did some tee shirts for Boris and Doomriders but I think that's it. I'm not sure if he even plans on doing other albums, oh! He did do the Doomriders/Disfear 7 Inch too.

theseseans: You guys just completed a video for Gossamer, how did that go? Have you seen the finished product yet?

Andrew: It was really fun, I had never done anything like that before. I think when DYI band think about videos the immediate thoughts are restrictions, and possibly bad ideas direction wise. Ours, thankfully isn't like that. It was just a performance piece with us playing to a track, which was really kind of wierd, but it was fun.

Carson: It was unnatural to say the least. The song would start and we would have to be rippin as hard as we could, but Mike and I weren't even plugged in, it was a really odd experience. They kept cutting holes in the floor to make the light reflect more. But Kevin Custer, the director is a really awesome guy, a really stand up gentleman, that definitely made it really comfortable. He kept the energy level really high and just worked us through it. It is really surreal watching the first cut that we have though, it's cut in an interesting way. I'm really excited to see the final product.

Andrew: I think it should be noted that Kevin Custer also did a video for Lil' Wayne, awwww yeah.

(Laughter)

Mike: Kevin is a real top of the line guy. I don't know how Relapse wrangled him into working with us, because this dude does huge stuff, working with top name people in the hip hop world. On the other hand though, he has done Kingdom Of Sorrow and the Testament video. I didn't know what to expect before meeting with him, but he's a hardcore guy. I went into his office and Age Of Quarrel is sitting on the floor, he looks just like any guy at a show. You know, but his day work is making huge videos for Lil' Wayne and Jim Jones and those cats, but like I said, I have no idea how Relapse set that up, maybe they have incriminating photos of him or something? But he really made it great, it was by far the most comfortable experience I've ever had working within the "music industry." By Far.

theseseans: Lastly, would you guys like to talk about influences at all? I usually have a hard time describing your sound to people, particularly your voice Mike, which to me also reminded me of Ian MacKaye if he was in a black metal band.

(Laughter)

Mike: I started singing mid way into being a guitarist (laughs) but yeah, influences. I was always into hardcore and punk, not the real tough guy stuff but Black Flag, Husker Du, Rorschach, Man is the Bastard, stuff like that. And then.....black metal. You know? (laughs) straight up, I love Emperor and Watain. Those are both powerful bands, the melody over the really fast playing is something that really speaks to me on an emotional level. Black metal has a feel you know? A real emotional feel, yet it's really brutal, and that's what I really touch on. But also Joy Division, The Swans, My Bloody Valentine, the really spaced out trippy aspects of those bands are a huge influence on my playing. Not so much the vocals, even though I would really like to feel the way that Kevin Shields feels and I would love to be able to just hang out with some floppy hair and hold hands with a beautiful Welsh woman, but that's just not who I am. I hang out alone mainly. (Laughter)

Carson: Well the black metal thing is pretty evident, but I would like to go on record saying that we are not a black metal band, and we do not consider ourselves a black metal band. It's a huge influence obviously and that is cool, I read somewhere someone saying that we sound like Hammerhead jamming with a bunch of serial killers, and I thought that was awesome. It's kind of hard to pin point what Winter Hours is though, there is a lot of different stuff going on.

Andrew: Well, I'm not on the album. But I'm totally into grind, crust, hardcore, and I try to expand upon that with prog.

theseseans: Thank you guys so much for your time.

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows

by theseseans (NYC)

You have a three day weekend? I do, sure hope you do too because this Sunday's metal offerings to NYC is fucking ridiculous. Greenpoint's Europa is hosting A Storm Of Light and Zoroaster, while Ocean, Salome, Riff Cannon, and Batillus are playing Public Assembly in Williamsburg.

If the winter already has you so broken that you can't wallow in the sea of doom these bands will be sludging through then stop by The Charleston to catch Sakes Alive!! (whose EP Act I I recently reviewed), or take the train into Manhattan to see Darkane and Warbringer. Yeah, that's ALL on Sunday, when it rains it pours!

Made Out Of Babies plan West Coast tour, look for your help

Made Out Of Babies

by theseseans (NYC)

Made Out Of Babies have announced plans to do a West Coast tour in April (10th -18th) and they are looking for some help from fans to play unconventional venues, or simply to go where they are most wanted. The band commented:

Instead of going the usual route we thought we would also ask if people knew of any awesome or interesting places to play that might not be on the usual booker/booking agent radar?...We so rarely make it out west these days and wanna make sure everyone that wants to see us gets to and that we have a great time in the process...
The band has a couple of legit requests such as they need to get some money, and please provide a PA, but that's not asking much for a band preparing to fly across the country and the drive up and down the West Coast to rock for you.

Made Out Of Babies is asking fans to message them via their MySpace page. Their record The Ruiner was #2 on my top ten of 2008. We'll let you know what's what with these dates as soon as everything has been sorted out!

New Video: Obscura - "Anticosmic Overload"

Obscura

Obscura have released their first video from one our most anticipated records for 2009, Cosmogenesis. The track, "Anticosmic Overload" is a great first video (as well as album opener) and introduction to the band. Highly technical death metal is the name of the game with Obscura, but the band is playing by their own rules. Songwriting takes a front seat, while "heavy" and "brutal" emphasis take the rear. This may not be every one's cup of tea, but it makes for a surprisingly easy listen (it is still death metal though! 'easy listen' is meant as a relative term, lets say to....Hate Eternal). The video is a pretty straight forward performance piece which does a nice job emphasizing the performers just silly skill. It could use, however, something to make it a little more visually appealing.

Punk Rock Spotlight: Off With Their Heads

Off With Their Heads

by theseseans (NYC)

We can't listen to metal all the time, but I have a serious love for distorted guitar, loud drums, and shitty vocals. So it should make perfect sense that when I am looking for a little change of pace from the crustcake favorites, I often turn to punk rock. One of my favorite punk records lately has been From The Bottom by Off With Their Heads. This band is all about three chord songs (one song seriously only has ONE CHORD), whiskey and cigarette vocals, and bleak, bleak lyrics. In short, it's a great punk rock record. If you are in the mood, check them out at their MySpace page.

The band just posted a new video for the song "Falling Down," read more for tour dates and the video.

Just to be clear, this video is pretty retarded, but the band doesn't take themselves too seriously. In reference to this video they had the following to say:

This will be our 2nd off From The Bottom, and dumbest accomplishment yet. Go ahead and re post this. Its the only way to not feel brain dead after you watch it.
Enjoy!

Javelina details upcoming record

Javelina

Philadelphia's Javelina have made plans to begin recording their next album this March. The group will be traveling to Chicago to work with Sanford Parker (Minsk, Nachtmystium, Pelican) for the recording. This will be Javelina's second record for Translation Loss Records, following last year's self titled debut. The album will feature nine songs, with some early song titles such as "Towers of Silence", "The Black Blizzard" and "Stepchild".

Javelina play a "blackened, death, rock".......whatever. They are heavy, and they sound like they may entertain the idea of skinning you alive. You know, just in a good way. Look for a late summer release on both vinyl and CD.

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows 2/5 - 2/11

Crustcake Picks - NYC Shows

Tonight, get your ass over to Union Pool for the third in the trifecta of crustcake-approved Swedish proto-metal conjurers: Dead Man. The other two in said trifecta are, of course, Witchcraft and Graveyard (the drummer of the latter first tipped us off about Dead Man back in March of '08). Dead Man are decidedly less heavy than their Scandinavian Brethren, but there's a certain charm to them that can't be ignored. Along for the ride tonight are Iowa's Radio Moscow and Brooklyn's own Headdress.

More after the jump.

Dead Man, Radio Moscow flyer

Dillinger will be in town on Saturday, and Goblin Cock will be supported by Warship and Orphan on Wednesday. OhMyRockness on Goblin Cock:

While Goblin Cock is very clear with their fans that they are not a joke band (stating rather precisely on their MySpace page, "Goblin Cock is not a joke band, Goddammit!!!") it can be hard to take a metal band seriously that a.) calls itself Goblin Cock b.) sings about Snuffaluffagus and c.) has Rob Crow as its singer.

As you probably know, Rob Crow has been in every band that's ever existed including, but not limited to; Pinback, Heavy Vegetable, Thingy, The Ladies, Holy Smokes, and Optiganally Yours. And that's not counting all of his solo albums.

Certainly prolific, most of Crow's creative projects also come with a big dose of humor. There are no coolness points for naming your band Heavy Vegetable. So while Goblin Cock may not be a "joke band," they still sound pretty funny to me. Rob Crow's stage name for Goblin Cock is "Lord Phallus" for crying out loud.

Regardless, the music Crow and his mates make here (including the great guitarist "Bane Ass-Pounder") is definitely real metal, so maybe that's all they mean by, "We're not a joke band. Anyway, Goblin Cock is for fans of bands like Gwar, that band who sang "Cotton Eye-Joe," Right Said Fred, and Previously on Lost. Just kidding, Rob!

Our picks:
Thursday 2/5/09 - Dead Man, Radio Moscow, Headdress @ Union Pool [$10]

Saturday 2/7/09 - Dillinger Escape Plan, Knife the Glitter, Caverns @ The Studio at Webster Hall [$18]

Wednesday 2/11/09 - Goblin Cock, Warship, Orphan @ Highline Ballroom [$12]

Municipal Waste Talk of New, More 'Pissed Off' Album

Municipal Waste

Municipal Waste are set to start recording the follow up to 2007's The Art Of Partying this March. The band will be entering the studio with producer Zuess and expect to the see the album released late August on Earache Records. We are stoked to hear the band is working with Zuess (who also produced The Art Of Partying) again, what with their last collaboration finding the band as "wasteful" as ever while allowing greater clarity to the band's sound. Municipal Waste said that their new record will be slightly different from past records, coming out more aggressive and pissed off. Frontman Tony Foresta commented:

I think it is a definite change from our last 2 albums. Nothing super drastic, but a positive change. The WASTE is still all about having a good time. But I think we all agreed on writing something a bit more pissed off and different with this album, Instead of going ahead and writing the same album all over again. But don't fear we're not getting "artistic" or any bullshit like that.
Modern drummer superhero Dave Witte agrees:
This set of new songs are challenging and super fun to play, we turned up the aggressive and speed knobs while keeping the good time intact.
Municipal Waste will then be hitting road on a rather interesting tour......read more for the dates and info.

Freshly Baked: Acid Witch, Liturgy, Weird Owl

Acid Witch

In "Freshly Baked," we feature promising young bands or bands that are otherwise lacking the attention we think they deserve.

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

Acid Witch brew dirty tone, spacey leads, death growls, eerie organs, and grooving riffs together in a cauldron of horror-infused stoner doom that's as fun as it is badass. This band excels at songwriting, a knack that makes up for their otherwise potentially-too-cheeseball approach. Their latest is Witchtanic Hellucinations, released last year on Razorback Records.

Listen: Acid Witch - "The Black Witch" [stream]

Liturgy

Liturgy started life as the one-man band of Brooklyn-based guitarist/vocalist Hunter Hunt-Hendrix. It's since gained legs, with the addition of a second guitarist, bassist, and drummer, but it still seems very much the twisted, noisy brainchild of its founder. Self-described as 'pure transcendental black metal,' Liturgy is raw, visceral, and jarring. Listen in "Beyond the Magic Forest" to the way the percussion ebbs and flows, shifting gears effortlessly outside of any apparent standard rhythmic framework. A harsh, abrasive song that's simultaneously uplifting and triumphant, the other two on the band's MySpace pale in comparison.

Listen: Liturgy - "Beyond the Magic Forest" [stream]

Thanks to TheTripwire for the tip.

Weird Owl

Weird Owl, not to be confused with Weird Al, are one of Tee Pee's latest signings. Hailing also from Brooklyn, Weird Owl is certainly the most conventional of the three presented in this post. They play a vocal-oriented brand of psychedelic rock fit equally for blunts and beers alike. They have a record out on February 17th, but having not heard it I can't pass any judgment. I can, however, tell you that the five songs on their MySpace page, though certainly good, don't quite capture the energy of their live set.

Listen: Weird Owl - "Like 100,000 Sunsets" [stream]

New Tombs Video - "Gossamer"

Tombs

Though the lighting and tones are pleasing in a dark, yet strangely uplifting way befitting Tombs' sound, this video for the lead cut off their forthcoming Relapse debut, Winter Hours, is a pretty straight-forward performance video. And that's probably a suitable approach for a video that will likely serve to introduce the band to many new fans.

The song itself, "Gossamer," is one of the least aggressive on the album-- it's one of perhaps two songs sans blast beat-- but it's also one of the album's strongest. The creative, unconventional drumbeat-- written by ex-drummer Justin Ennis (current drummer Andrew Hernandez [ex-Asra] appears in the video, signature bullets hanging from rack toms)-- is memorable and serves as the driving force behind the song.

Tombs - "Gossamer":

Winter Hours is out on Relapse February 23rd.
