When I brought up the idea of a podcast in one of our weekly meetings, the other Crustcakers met the idea with a tepid response but told me to go for it. A few weeks later, we're happy and proud to present to you the pilot episode of the Crustcast, featuring our own Andrew Wilhelm and these seans, along with Decibel’s and Invisible Oranges’ Cosmo Lee and Jess Blumensheid. And, of course, myself as host.

With this podcast, I hope to provide you, our readers (and now listeners), with an entertaining and informative discussion of what’s going on in the metal world today. This episode features two segments: one in which we discuss what we’ve been listening to lately and the other featuring news from the metal world.

If you like what you’re hearing, please let us know. Leave a comment here, or e-mail us at crustcake@gmail.com. We’re looking for suggestions right now – what do you want to hear us talk about? Should we talk less? Do you want longer song clips? Shorter ones? Sillier or more serious news? What kind of guests would you like to hear? Let us know!

Reader, as the guy who spent a few hours setting all this up, editing it, and writing these few paragraphs, I urge you to let me know.

Show notes, including songs used, below.

Songs included in order of appearance:
Dystopia – “Sleep”
Laudanum – “Invoke”
Marduk – “Nowhere, No-one, Nothing”
Naked City – “Osaka Bondage”
War Master – “Chapel of the Apocalypse”
Black Cobra – “Chronosphere”
Trash Talk – “Dig”
Mastodon – “I am Ahab”

New Burzum Album
Varg’s rebuttal
Mayhem arrested for destroying hotel room (via Blabbermouth)

Loved it. Andy has sort of a stilted speaking voice but still liked hearing what he was saying. Would definitely listen to future episodes.

thanks Zack! Andy's voice is INCREDIBLE.

Anyone have any thoughts on the song clips? Should we include full songs, instead of clips?

I thoroughly enjoyed that. I think the clips are fine, the conversation was more interesting than most of the music anyway.

i enjoyed this! sorta like a audio roundtable or forum.
maybe you could feature a (newish) band or two that you all have been listening to along with a few songs and background info. (kinda of like your cakes in the oven features)

do tell me what tegan and sara songs have "cheerleading vocals", whatever the hell that is

Great job on the podcast to all who were involved. There were some interesting nuggets of information involved in there. I wish you had elaborated on how lame Varg Vikernes is, because that would be appropriate and acceptable. Nice work!

Except for Will, though. Will is a dildo

Well Done, great idea.

Hate to criticize at all, but 30 minute limit an episode maybe? Basically I am sure it will just get better every episode, keep it up!

Love hearing samples and just being exposed to all this without having to troll the net.

Hey guys. Great podcast! I enjoyed it quite a bit. I like having clips instead of full songs personally.

podcast sucked editing sucked some of the most awkward cuts ive ever heard. not to mention it was about the most awkward thing ive ever heard. how bout u plan something next time

The WZA'd said...

Thanks Anon! Will take that into consideration for sure.

Anonymous said...

you probably just shouldn't do this none of you seem like you really know much about music at all except for COSMO LEE. he seems like the ring leader of the whole podcast and hes not even in the room i mean come on leave it to the professionals and save everyone the awkwardness

Anonymous said...

wtf is this shit? metalunderground brings you the actual news you want to hear from good bands not this rambling pointless news about shitty underground black metal bands.

Anonymous said...

How dare you call yourself the WZA? you very obviously don't know much at all about making music and very little about listening and analyzing. how bout you find a new hobby like reviewing fat chick porn or something else you'll be better at.

the above Anon comments are like peckerslapping the pilot of the hindenberg, except maybe they can prevent another disaster

Anonymous said...

the uncomfortable pause after COSMO LEE smacks all you bitches up is priceless. "I think the band would be pissed if they heard you call their art background music" DAAAAAAAAMN DAMN DAAAAMN the silence afterwords is fucking ashlee simpson on SNL shit

Anonymous said...

i think the above anonymous posts are being plain mean. the show's great, it just needs a little polish around the edges like talented djs, songs that don't blow ass, voices that sound good over radio, and an atmosphere that's more comfortable than being slowly groped by a strange hairy man in a kentucky closet playing his itunes genius playlist too loud

1) make another one
2) I only charge 15% for my "advice".

Fantastic Guys! Let's hear some more! Finally a quality metal podcast

These Seans said...

thanks fear and anon after him!

Fear - Looks like we will be doing more. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out what 15% of $0 is...but I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

I liked the idea a lot. Discussion of big bands is entertaining, but explore smaller bands as well that people may not have heard before. No one that is listening to this cares about bands such as Lamb of God.

Stay with the clips of songs.

I also like the panel discussion idea.

It might be cool if, instead of all of you talking about different stuff you've heard recently, you just picked one album that you all listened to and thought about ahead of time. That might make it sort of like a metal book club--which would be kinda dorky--but what the hell. You might be able to get more in depth/find more provocative things to say that way, and I like the idea of hearing a very detailed conversation about an album.

The podcast is good, I would love to be able to subscribe to this on iTunes if you continue to make more.
