by Andrew Wilhelm (Denver)
If you love livin' in the past, Denver is the place to break out your bell bottoms and denim vests this week. The Mile High City is hosting quite a few bands who jam out 70s rock unabashedly and (hopefully) unironically.
First, we've got Valient Thorr and Early Man on Thursday. Valient Thorr have Southern groove in their blood as if Second Helping is the hippest thing around. Early Man hold the distinction of aping not one but two retro styles in their career, starting off as a Sabbath worship band and eventually morphing into a thrashin' throwback. Sure beats crunkcore, though.
Once the weekend becomes a blurry memory, Fu Manchu return to Denver to smoke your weed and crush your head with heavy stoner rock. Who gives a shit if Denver isn't near a coast? Surf's up, motherfuckers!
Tuesday will bring about Red Fang, the love child of pre-synthesizer ZZ Top and Motorhead. I wrote earlier this year that they didn't quite rock as hard as they should, but I'm willing to give this band a second chance. Maybe headlining status could really bring out their ferocity.
Dates and info after the jump.
