Indie Rock Roundup with Rufus

Chris Martin

Hi. I'm Rufus.

As crustcake has moved in a more focused direction, we have all but abandoned discussion of most or all non-metal music. But we still like the occasional Stereogum-endorsed indie rock flavor du jour (and hate some of it, too), and the crustcake slavedrivers kind-hearted whip-wielders editors have ordered kindly requested that I provide some words to that effect. Maybe I'll do this on a regular basis. Or maybe not. Who gives a shit anyway?

Fleet Foxes - They describe themselves as 'baroque harmonic pop,' and that fits well. The music is lush and dark, deeply rooted in the 60s but sounding quite modern at the same time. Bob Lefsetz was right about "Mykonos"-- it's a killer track.

Santogold - She is blowing up something fierce and is receiving rave reviews from basically everyone, but she's signed on with Converse-- a move that has surely shortened the shelf life of her career. I got her single "L.E.S. Artistes" stuck in my head after hearing it again on 'Sound Opinions' and I had to download the album-- turns out "Artistes" is the only good song on the damn thing!!! What the fuck?! To be fair, I didn't make it all the way through her album, but who has the time?

Feist - (Last year's news I know. I never said I was up to date on the Hype Machine) Hip enough for the trust fund Williamsburgers but not so hip that your mom can't dig it too.

Coldplay - SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT COLDPLAY. They are a good band, but they aren't THAT FUCKING GOOD. JUST SHUT UP. They should be playing the club circuit, not the Daily Show. And Rolling Stone? Chris Martin is not a 'rock god'. LEMMY is a rock god. You fucks.
