A Brief History of Time Sunn O)))

Sunn O)))

In the winter of 1994, Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson formed Thorr's Hammer in the cold, wet, dark Pacific Northwest town of Ballard, Washington. The future Southern Lords were joined by then-17-year-old Norwegian exchange student Runhild Gammelsæter, and after playing a couple shows and releasing an EP, Dommedagsnatt, Thorr's Hammer disbanded.

Shortly after, in 1996, O'Malley and Anderson formed Burning Witch with Jamie Sykes (Invisible Oranges has a review and a couple MP3 samples, which was the inspiration for this post).

Anderson left Burning Witch and moved to Los Angeles to form the sludge-erific Goatsnake with former Obsessed (see also: Wino) bassist Guy Pinhas and drummer Greg Rogers.

In 1998, O'Malley and Anderson reunited to form Sunn O))) and Southern Lord Records, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Make the jump for some MP3s and a handy chart to help you visualize the doom family tree.

Hail! But you're missing Gravetemple, Pentemple, Goatsnake, Lotus Eaters among others (e.g., AVSA).

Hence, a 'brief' history. And Goatsnake is totally on there.

We will do a comprehensive history soon, if we can pull ourselves away from the bottle for long enough to do all the research.
