Psychedelic Sci-fi

Danava

by crustcake gerf (NYC)

I don't know how I managed to overlook this show when compiling my picks for this week, but I did. Consider this post my rectification.

Portland psy-fi rockers Danava (those healthy-maned gents pictured above) will be supporting enigmatic Japanese psyche collective Acid Mothers Temple tonight at Mercury Lounge.

Japanese guitarist Makoto Kawabata [brought] together likeminded individuals to create trippy psychedelic freak-outs inspired by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Krautrock, and '70s progressive hard rock. Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. (Underground Freak Out) was founded in 1996 as a "soul collective." It's not a commune in the full sense since the members don't all live together, but it is based on communal values and has even been mistaken by some people for a religious cult. [All Music Guide]
Danava's Dan Kim-directed video for "Where Beauty and Terror Dance" tripped us out back in January, and the band's recently-released LP UnonoU is tripping us out still.
