For the next several weeks, our regular "Crusty Clip of the Week" feature will be replaced with "Waltz Wednesdays," in which we'll be featuring some of our favorite moments from Martin Scorcese's classic rock n' roll film The Last Waltz. All mp3s featured in this column will be the versions from The Last Waltz.
Muddy Waters is a true blues legend and "Mannish Boy" is a song you may not recognize by name but have probably heard once or twice. We here at crustcake spent many an inebriated night back in Boston singing (or screaming) our own a cappella version.
Muddy may be showing some age in this clip but he's still got it, and The Band, along with Paul Butterfield on mouth harp, give him the respect he deserves. The coolest part of this particular clip is Muddy’s energy towards the 5 minute mark, and his attempt to help conduct the band to a clean ending. He gestures for the final fermata a couple beats early-- a minor bump in the road-- but that just makes it all the more real.
