Metal Power!

Don't deny it-- whether it's Journey, Styx, Def Leppard, or furniture porn, we all have guilty pleasures.

Every so often I like to indulge my guilty pleasure. Namely, my "obsession" with the wankery and pure cheese-fest otherwise known as power metal. There's just something about the unabating show-off shredding and those sing-along vocals that urges your fists into the air and commands you to belt out the lyrics at the top of your lungs (even if you don't know them) that I find strangely compelling.

Completely absent the slightest notion of subtlety or tact, power metal musicians are, more often than not, in the game for one thing and one thing only: to show the world how fucking good they are at their instrument. Lightning-fast guitar mastery; blistering percussion; bombastic, operatic vocals; and enough D&D references to make even Chazz Darvey blush-- it's all there, folks.

Indulge your passion guilty pleasure too with DragonForce's "Through the Fire and Flames":

Also, here.

power metal rules... think back to the early days of "new wave of british heavy metal" and one can argue that power metal is the truest form of metal... (think Judas Priest, etc.)

for anyone on the fence about power metal being cool or not, a perfect transition band and album would be Mercenary's "The Hours That Remain" power metalish vocals with melodic death metal, they threw in some screaming for good measure... check 'em out. also highly recommended is Nocturnal Rites

Dunno if Cellador and/or 3 Inches Of Blood qualify as power metal, but they're not to be missed if you dig throwback metal a la Priest, Maiden...

And as long as we're talking about NWOBHM and Maiden, I feel obliged to mention Sweden's Wolf.

ain't no fightin' going down, just some good ole' heated 'ball squeezing vocal' discussion. i've heard good things about Wolf, any particular album to start with?

for a kick in the balls so to speak, i would suggest Stratovarious's song "Hunting High and Low" from the album Infinite
