First let me start off by saying there was a ton of quality shit this year. Second, I feel as if 2007 has come and gone too quickly for music and me. I’m pretty geeky and obsessive when it comes to collecting catalog albums, and so I feel as if I still haven’t gotten to a few great records out there in ’07 land. However, the albums below definitely defined this year for me. Read on and feel free to yell at me!
10~
Anaal Nathrakh
Hell is Empty, and all the Devils are Here [Amazon] [iTunes]
Pure and disgusting power, this album is unrelenting. The vocals will make you shit yourself!
Crucial Cut: "Shatter the Empyrean" [MP3]
9~
Sweet Cobra
Forever [Amazon]
Rock n' roll spirit is still alive. 333 parts skate punk + 333 parts sludge = Forever.
Crucial Cut: "Jackals and Arabs" [MP3]![]()
8~
Despised Icon
The Ills of Modern Man [Amazon] [iTunes]
A successful marriage of hardcore and death metal. Thick, brutal, and punishing.
Crucial Cut: "Sheltered Reminiscence" [MP3]
7~
Rwake
Voices of Omens [Amazon]
If you’ve ever wondered what the bastard child of Pink Floyd and YOB would sound like, this is the album for you.
Crucial Cut: "Inverted Overtures" [MP3]
6~
Jesu
Conqueror [Amazon]
Broadrick displays his genius once again. Beautifully uplifting and apocalyptic at the same time.
Crucial Cut: "Conqueror" [MP3]
5~
Neurosis
Given to the Rising [Amazon] [iTunes]
The masters that defined an entire movement have made another impressive statement with Given to the Rising. It’s a definite audio experience.
Crucial Cut: "Water Is Not Enough" [MP3]
4~
Earth
Hibernaculum [Amazon]
I ended many a night lying in bed listening to this record. Each song is a movement within a perfect dark spaghetti western soundtrack.
Crucial Cut: "Ouroboros Is Broken" [MP3]
3~
Baroness
Red Album [Amazon]
A perfect evolutionary step for an already amazing band. This record really brought them into the ‘indieground’ spotlight.
Crucial Cut: "The Birthing" [MP3]
2~
High on Fire
Death is this Communion [Amazon]
Fist pumpin’, iron horse ridin', whiskey chuggin’, head banging heavy fucking metal!
Crucial Cut: "Rumours of War" [MP3]
1~
Big Business
Here Come The Waterworks [Amazon]
Let’s just say this was my cup of coffee of sorts on the way into work each day since its release early this year. I guarantee you’ll catch yourself humming these tunes by the water cooler on bagel day.
Crucial Cut: "Hands Up" [MP3]

Without question, your top 4 are my same top 4 of this year, at least as far as anything with guitars goes... Nice list.
no yelling here.......I would have to agree with most of that list....especially #1.....waterworks did it for me too......I wasn't impressed with "Death is this Communion"...maybe my hopes were too high......can you blame me. But it's still High on Fire which automatically makes it good. I would have given a shout to "Witchcult Today" from Electric Wizard......and even though it was only an EP "In Return" from Torche deserves a tip of the hat. Is that breaking the rules? Nice list from the Beat....B..Beat.......Beat.....Beatmaster...........Speeeech
Nice choices. I especially liked the albums from Despised Icon, Jesu, High On Fire, Neurosis and Baroness. I may have to hear that Big Business and Earth soon.
Rwake = sweetness.
I don't see the magic in Big Business. Lots of people I know and respect love that band too. I think they're alright, but.... I don't know, I just don't see it?
if you ever get the chance to catch Big Business live... please do (if the price is right). it might help sway your opinion. i remember my first listen to Big Business was nice but not great, then one day i just got it... i think it just has to hit you and then you're hooked. great energy live though
YES!......you must see them live. I have seen them twice...once when they toured for "Head For The Shallow" with High on Fire and a second time not so long ago on their tour for "Waterworks" (for short). The first time was like .....eh.....it was ok. The second time was like......OH MY GOD THAT WAS AMAZING!!!! One of the big differences was that they toured with a guitar player to fill in the little licks that were added in the studio.....and the new songs lend themselves to live performance much better. THEY SOUNDED JUST LIKE THE CD!!....and I'm pretty sure that the sound guy at the Middle East upstairs had nothing to do with it....listen to the beatmaster.....he speaks the truth...
their tour w/ The Melvins was pretty fuckin rad.
